how come only Zeppelin - LOL gets nailed for plagiarizing the Blues? in truth the whole plagiarism schtick is way out of proportion. take "they are red hot," by Robert Johnson. fantastic. think he wrote it?!
I can remember the first time I heard Truth and Beck-ola in 1968. Always stuck with me. Played "I Ain't Superstitious" to my daughter a year ago. She is now a Beck fan, jazz and rock. More creative than Hendrix IMHO. There aren't enough real guitarists today.
god takes me back popping pills getting ready for the oldfield hotel saturday night playing this on my stereo upsetting the neighbours awesome wonderfull the best!!!!!!! gawd rod what are you doing now !! youve lost it mate!!! stop all that old sinatra style embarrasing kareoke shit you (cant) sing now get yer balls back!!!
Can't argue the point 79goldmaster makes about emotion and pure 'guts' that drives the blues... this is stuff that is NOT taught in school!
The 32-bar ULTRA-SIMPLE framework of 'blues' is PERFECT for laying all of our angst out... Some, like Jeff Beck and others... simply take it to another level entirely! I've often found it ironic that it took (for many of us) the Brits to introduce us to our own Black culture! Good stuff!
Totally agree..saw Beck @ the Fillmore E. and later.. Maybe 6X all together..
I totally hate his sound now...same sloppy noise which he place the same licks for every song, even his DVD with BB. King he could keep it straight blue except for a little riff he did when trading licks with BB That 2 second riff was worth the price of the DVD!
Beck was a great blues-rock guitarist, but trying to play jazz and the fusion crap is like Segovia trying to play Hendrix.
@japonaliya You're probably RIGHT! But the image you painted of Andres Segovia trying to play 'Foxy Lady' had me rolling on the floor with laughter! Nice!
@japonaliya i'm not crazy about his current sound now either...but i don't agree w/your comment about him playing jazz...jeff can play in many styles and pull it off w/ease..He is one of the few multi talented guitar players around...
This album features an exceptionally tight band with a startlingly melodic rhythm section In Ron Wood and Mickey Waller. I was mesmerized by Wood's bass playing. He was so fluid with his abundant use of triplets and octaves. Although Wood's guitar work with The Faces was terrific (witness I'm Losing You), to my chagrin he never picked up that Telecaster Bass again in a band.
@marchone2 I totally agree ! Ron Wood is an excellent bass player! With Mickey Waller they were as good as the Experience rythm section Mitchell/Redding ! On Jailhouse Rock, Wood has a HUGE sound!
Jeff Beck ranks at the top of my all time favorite guitarists. I was fortunate enough to see them on both tours for their first and second albums. Fillmore East for every show and The Newport Jazz Festival. They were easily the most exciting sound on the scene since Hendrix, and Cream before him.
Thank you for posting this. I feel SO fortunate that I got to see the Jeff Beck Group for the short time they were all together...Rod Stewart blew us all away at the time. Jeff is still unsurpassed IMO.
The Jeff Beck Truth album is one of my all time favorites and I'd have to say Rock My Plimsoul is my favorite song on the album. Having said that though FYI they released a remastered Truth album a few years back and it has a different version bonus track of Rock My Plimsoul which I actually like better, its a little faster and really rocks....Jeff Beck-Rock My Plimsoul (Remastered Bonus Track)
I also prefer the 'other' version of 'Rock My Plimsoul', which featured Aynsley Dunbar on drums (later Zappa, Journey, Starship, Whitesnake, etc.) and was the B-side of Jeff's 2nd single (1967), the Graham Gouldman-penned 'Tallyman'. Gouldman, later a founding member of 10cc (another great band) penned the Yardbirds' debut hit, 'For Your Love', as well as 60s classics 'Bus Stop' (Hollies) and 'No Milke Today (Herman's Hermits). Check the raw and smoking solo on the 'other version.
The Plynth video is cool but they are not playing their instruments, I would love to see a video of them actually playing their guitars for Truth album Let me Love you and Blues DeLuxe. Anyone out there have one??
loved Rod's voice at this time and with the faces!! shame he went n did the american song book or whatever its called. mind you suppose he's gettin on. i wonder if i'll get comfy in slippers at that age :P
For true blues, it's about the emotion behind it not about technical proclivity. Any cat can go through the motions to learn how to play in a very mechanical way, but you can't teach or fake the emotion behind it. And that is why, to some of us, the blues is superior.
I think I ate too many chocolate chip cookies the night I went and saw this group live.
Beck shredding with stewart vocals still twist my backbone like a wagon wheel in the country. Weird to see these guys move on to independent careers as they did and never sound a bit different today than they did 42 years ago
That solo - in 5 seconds from 1:35 to 1:40 Beck just pretty much nails the entire English blues sound of the 60's at high speed and then moves on like it's nothin'. Classic tune.
Niiiiiiiiice....thanks! That opening few seconds brings it all back. Saw The Jeff Beck Group the year they released this, Carousel Ballroom, Graham's Fillmore concerts. Beck played a gold top LP and ripped. Stewart was in that early phase where he faced back towards the amp line on some of the tunes, kinda steppin' back from the spotlight. Beck's always been and will always be a very, very bad man on the guitar. And that's all good. : )
@G7flat5 see Jeff Beck Group (Rod Stewart) - Plynth-water down the drain, for a video of the band in the recording studio, with Stewart laying down the vocal track. They were very good -- the Stewart-Beck vocal-guitar combination has rarely been matched in rock, and maybe never surpassed.
@Birkebine Beck-o-la . . I would love to see videos of the band actually playing the songs from Truth when Beck was using his Sunbrst les Paul. Thanks
@Birkebine he did the American songbook because it was his passion, and he paid for it himself, it just so happens that they are some his best selling albums of all time, it opened up a new fan base for him, music lovers who are older than Rod, an example, my , at the time 80 yr old uncle , who heard the first song book and it reminded him of my aunt who had just passed away, This is an Ex -Marine, who wouldnt even have listened to Rod Stewart, but he loves the songs and the way he sang them,
@paulbarraza did I give the impression I'd bailed out on Stewart? Actually I didn't even mind his syrup and disco period of the late 70s, not that I ran out to buy the albums. Even when he's singing earnestly about deflowering virgins, I find something to enjoy in his vocals. I saw him two or three times in the 70s and 80s, including with Jeff Beck. He's a natural showman who appears to genuinely love entertaining his audience, so it's a pleasure to be part of it.
