@etuak that would depend on how long and thick you want the braid - i'm using 2oz deerhide in the video.Thin leather is easier to work with than thick, so I recommend a lightweight leather; suede strips work well!
@NamelessHill Hi. Actually, i cut my own ;-) But you can buy them precut from Tandy Leather Factory - they have a great online store. Look under "leather lacing-stitching". Thanks for watching!

@aaronrushton1 you can leave a strand of leather hanging out each end for a tie-on style or use a wire-wrap approach and the clasp of your choice. Those are just two ideas - feel free to explore other options as well!
I thought I had said 'thank you' here before, but if I did, I can't find my comment. I have used your tutorial to make straps for mandolins and guitars, and I can't recommend your tutorial highly enough. Thanks (maybe for the second time).
Hi I love this vid. Can you tell me how you cut your laces from the hide? Scissors just dont give me the even consistency that I want. If you wouldnt mind sharing that infor? Many thanks
@mukwah1111 Thanks for viewing! I sometimes use scissors, but it takes practice and I can understand why you're having trouble with it! I also sometimes cut with a straight-edge ruler and a rotary cutter - all depends on how many i have to cut! If neither of these work for you, Tandy and other places do sell precut lace, including deerhide. Good luck!
@aosleather How did I know that you might also be hunkered down in this weather this morn ? Lots O snow here overnight in Ont. Thanks for your suggestions on cutting the lacing. I do find that the hide stretches when I try to cut it with a rotary cutter & ruler tho & my scissor skills just arent that great. I have one of those spinny tools ..like the German guy in your faves but I cant seem to master it..guess I better keep trying as it seems to be the neatest, smoothest & fastest eh? Miigwetch
@mukwah1111 lol - yeah the snow is still coming down here and i am definitely hunkered! The tool you are speaking of doesn't work with deerhide - only with less stretchy leather like cowhide. If you go to my blog & look under the 2008 posts, passion for pouches, you'll find a pic of me cutting with scissors. Note the way i hold the leather - this creates tension, which helps a lot! and the trick with the rotary cutter is use a metal ruler and hold it down tight while cutting! Aho!
@Reginaldesq So sorry if I wasn't clear! What i mean is: go around the back, underneath the first one you encounter then over then next one you encounter, alternate sides and repeat - around the back, underneath the first thong you encounter then over the next. Thanks for watching!
How do you end using a turks head? This is my first time making the 4 part round braid. :) Thanks so much for teaching me!! I just need to learn how to end it now.
I am trying to make my dog a lead 6 - 8 braid, with a core. But the I dont know what they mean by a core. I bought Kangaroo leather cause they said it was the strongest. And I have a german shepherd that ways 80lbs... Can u help?
@stormygirl2009 Kangaroo hide is the favorite of whip-makers for it's superior strength & flexibility - great choice!
A core is a piece in the center that you braid around - rope is the most common core for a dog leash - make sure you choose the rope as carefully as the leather - strong & flexible! Good luck!.
@bigshithead1 on this example it's about 1/4" wide (about 6.5mm). You can use almost any width you can handle, though - for very wide plaits you'll want to braid around a core, such as a piece of rope, so the width lays right.
@ericglare Thank you for your concern and efforts re Victorian bushfires. Rebuilding just started, painful process as 173 people died. Many trees well shot and host again but many famous Mountain Ash died as it was too hot. Thanks for thinking of us.
@ericglare Thanks so much for the update - such a tragic loss of life and resources! I hope the rebuild goes swiftly and that this horror is never repeated!!
@ericglare if you are crossing strands over a ring, cross the left strand over the right & count this as a beginning. Then the next move will be to bring the one from the left back around the back, under the first strand and crossing over the next. Hope this helps ;-)
Thank you for posting this. Where do you buy the deer hide lace? I'm looking to make some black and gray "getback" whips, and no one seems to carry gray lace...
@mtstizzle I cut my own laces, but there are some places you can purchase deer or other types already made up. tandyleatherfactory dotcom or leatherunltd dotcom are two sources for lace - (remove the spaces before the and convert "dot" to a . - written this way so they will post ;-)
Gray lace made out of deer or any other leather might be impossible to find - a quick check of those 2 suppliers shows that only the vinyl lace comes in gray.
My preferred leather for this braid is Deer Hide, but it will work with any thin leather or even with cloth - you can braid around a core (such as a piece of rope) for added strength or body :-)
Thank you so much for this tut! Im doing a secret santa with my class, and have to create something for a guy i dont really know. i will definately use this method..! Keep it up x x x

Thanks for the tutorial..I am going to give this a shot..where to you get the strands of leather?? Also if I want to make some leather leads how many feet of unbraides leather would be needed to make 6 ft braided lengths? Thanks
