  • the edge with hair those were the days lol

  • In an interview with the Hon. Desmond Guinness, he informed me that following the Police concert in 1980 some people broke into the residential property and sprayed graffiti on the walls and that is the main reason he decided to stop allowing Leixlip Castle as a venue for outdoor concerts, thus the birth of Slane as the number two outdoor concert venue in the World

  • can you see me? thats me right there ! Jap from the park

  • AT THAT SHOW WAS PRECISELY WHERE YOU RELEASED A BOTTLE THE POLICE WHEN YOU PLAYED VERY ANNOYING TO STING AND ANDY SUMMERS

  • Wish I could have been there but I was only 1 year old ha ha ;)

  • Actually, I was in Ireland that year during the summer with my parents to see my relatives > I've gone every summer my entire life and I'll be there this coming July as well. I can't wait ;)

  • Well, now I know why Edge said "Uncool name-Sting"!!!

  • great day. Brings me back to the good old days........

  • U2 kinda sucked that day, no one was impressed except for the 100 fans up front who then threw bottles at the Police. The hit Stuart kit and he stopped the show saying its those U2 fans down there. He came to the front of the stage and pointed them out !

Squeeze played also and I forget who else. This is NOT the original audio.

  • bring back music 2 leixlip, i just live up the road so it would be great :))))

  • recent interviews said that bono loved joy division

you can see where the dancing came from

  • its unbelievable that they only formed the band 4 years before and edge had to learn how to play.you could say he learnt pretty fast. easily the best live band ever

  • Greate song XD Terrible dancing 0:10 - 0:16

    LUV U2

  • What ever happened to this band?

  • @khunopie What ??

  • @khunopie Which band? U-2?

  • @khunopie They sank without a trace, Pity they could have ruled the world.

  • From 1976-1981, Leixlip castle was my local castle/music venue, i sold band merchandise, specifically "U2" pencil cases to get a free ticket into this gig!..gotta love you tube!

    Merci FB .

  • You've got the dance-skills Bono!

  • bellissimo, una vera chicca! I veri U2 con la loro grinta iniziale..

  • man i hate bono , this my home town , they should reallly start playin gigs there again

  • I learn to play this song at the mo, not a difficult song to pick up - class. This was also the first U2 single I bought

  • Love this track!

  • This is the old 'arty' version - new wave &c. Later harder and better.

  • Silly putting this version over the top, we want the original live audio!

  • I like the dancing.

  • U2 were playing support for The Police this day. It was near my house so I cycled over(aged 8) and a kind security guard let me in for free, telling me to be careful. I remember someone threw a bottle at Sting!!

  • oh wow!

  • U lucky sod! My mum wouldn't let me go even though my cousin played with the Virgin prunes around then so we sorta knew them - and I was a MASSIVE Police fan! (He said they would never play Ireland again after that bottle incident - and they didn't until the reunion tour!) I did see them in the Dandelion market in 1979 though!

  • @daraghcassells; That is brilliant, I was there mid crowd in the middle, do you remember the Smells Angels, forty of them, everyone got outta the way?

The security I saw did not appear to be kind, there were loads of blokes trying to get in for nothing.

  • @daraghcassells , we probably raced each other on our bikes at some stage, i was 10, i fell in love with sting and the police that day, and ive never looked back!

  • @daraghcassells Was there a message in it telling him his band were shit

  • i have this on audio with the real concert audio

  • on youtube? .. as much as i love the studio version, id rather hear the performance im seeing

  • you should totally post it on youtube! I have always wished that this great video had the real time sound recording with it.

  • I was at a U2 gig organised by Dublin's Trinity College Students' Union in October 1979. It took place on a Friday night in the Junior Common Room (JCR) and about 200 people turned up. How quickly things changed for the band in the months after that.

  • Hey! The music isn´t live! It´s from the record.

  • Great post!

  • FANTASTIC old school U2...The Edge still plays that guitar at present shows for songs like I will Follow and Beautiful Day amongst others.

  • Thank you for giving us so many Irish joy! Salu2! See my video.

  • Happy days indeed! That was a craking day out in Leixlip, supporting The Police.

U2 wiped the floor with 'em! Pity you've not been true to the footage by leaving it "as is", without the dubbing over of the original Tick Tock single recording. Have it on cassette here anyway! ;-)

How many years was Tick Tock No 1 in the Fanning Fab 50?!!!!

  • ColmEFC, this is the 'as is overdub' the way this video was released by the U2 camp, or some other body, way back in the 1980's. I've had this recording as is since 1992 which I got from a world class U2 collector.

  • The U2 Logo behind Larry was made of plastic wavin pipe !!!

  • Global5325, wow, after all these years, this is first I've realized that thanks to you. I've seen this video since 1992.

  • whoaatt? in 1980 already...they must have been kids..that was 28 years ago..OMG..already the voice and stage presence perfect.... true talent...

  • west side

  • I think that they opened for The Police for this concert.

  • yeah they had i was 12 was at that concert

  • This clip is a fraud! The audio is from a studio recording, except at the very beginning and at the very end. At 3:02 you can see Bono yelling into the microphone and you don't even hear him. There are numerous times that you hear backing vocals but no one is singing into the microphones. It sounds like someone spliced a studio audio recording on top of a live video. Also, it sounds like someone put crowd noises(cheering) on top of it. Someone really tried hard to deceive everyone but it failed.

  • Yes you're correct. But back in 1980, this was the official video for their first single on Island Records. It's a shame, because U2 have almost always been better live than on record. U2 are easily the best live band I've ever seen. Probably the best live band in the history of rock and roll.

  • @skrason Sorry The Who will always be the best live band in rock and roll history. Don't get me wrong though, I love U2

  • @skrason Yeah right, them or the back up band they have under their stage set up???

  • IF YOU LISTEN , IT IS ALMOST THE PRE CURSOR TO " THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" THE LYRIC AND BEAT ETC.. almost like eno loved this track and wanted to expand on it.. I LOVE IT SO MUCH..

bono vox/ i dig you!!!! (was influenced by you when I was a teen.)

  • Ha!, what was thrown at bono at 19 ses...

  • soda. ;)

  • Actually, I think that U2 has always been a great band (the greatest, for me). Bono is a excellent singer, performer and he's full of charisma. However, Boy, War, Achtung Baby and Zooropa, are, for me, superior...

  • Achtung baby and zooropa yes indeed !

  • I don't think so.

At least The Unforgettable Fire is a very good album and Joshua Tree, too.

  • The best U2 is early U2....thanks for sharing this :) Anything from Boy backwards is the shiiiiit

  • It absolutely is true!

  • haightbum

    It absolutely is true!

  • Are there any earlier clips anyone knows of?

  • If you mean of u2 in general check out 'life on adistant planet' 'the fool' and 'street missions' they are magical! :)

  • "it's cold outside..." that music was in my head, thank you tube

  • anyone know where i can get better quailty of this video?

  • Bad dubbing from Dublin. LOl

  • SUPER RARE!!!! WOW!

Is There ANY Footage Of Them Playing Slane 1980 If SO PLEASE FOR THe Love Of GOD POST IT!!

    Cheers.

  • ayy bono como me gustan tus canciones!!!

xq me tines tan hipnotizada bono???

  • Jesus Christ this makes me almost want to cry. Just a good band -- bare bones -- no big stage props or crazy lighting --- just the **MUSIC** brought all those people there. FANTASTIC!! thanks for posting.

I think heaven for me might just be an eternal U2 concert.

  • If u hang shit on this clip u r a loser. U2 rule

  • Agreed 100% well said my man 'UP THE DUBS!'

U2 are the music industry.... Good luck

  • I shagged that hot chick holding the fence. I was only seven at the time! Oh memories....of the way we were

  • When I hear/watch the old U2 I get the impression they were more like a band back then. Nowadays it all seems to be about Bono and The Edge

  • They are probably even closer than then as they have been together for so long without a break-up: What an achievement in and of itself! I don't think they would agree with you.

  • I agree partially with you. They probably are good friends but, musically speaking, it seems that Adam and Larry had more influence at the beginning then they have now (especially their first three records). I don't mean to be nostalgic, though, as I still prefer them in the nineties.

  • Edge is singing, "Memories..." when he watches video from this time- memories of his full head of hair.

  • ha.

  • come on, folks, you KNOW Edge has a sense of humor! It's a joke!

  • lol

foi este bono que fez amar esta banda ate hoje

    ja la vao 26 anos

    quesaudades que tempos

    amo u2 dd 1981

  • What's with the audio edit into the studio version?

    That's a bit shoddy!

  • Awesome. I wanna go back.

  • Leixlip is a weird place

  • I was there too but Skafish didn't play. They were cancelled at the last minute even though the band were ready to go on. I mostly remember some moron throwing a bottle which smashed all over Stewart Copeland's drumkit & stopped the gig for a while.

  • I was at this gig! Aged 10 with my bbest mate Ferris. Fantastic.

  • oh wow!! you were 10? good taste for a 10 year old..

  • Indeed! That must have been amazing to see the best band in the world when they were starting out! So Jealous!

  • geweldig en natuurlijk het beste nummer wat live gespeeld werd en hopelijk ooit weer live gespeeld gaat worden.

  • Also great footage! Love the early days of U2!!! THE All time best Band EVER!!! No questions asked...

  • it was maybe 28 years ago, for me is a long time but i like very much u2. In my High School i write sometimes a article of u2, the name of the newspaper is Mameli Magazine. P.S u2 are the best in the world!!

  • anybody got a time machine??? coooor....... so great :)

  • love this very rare..thanks 2 ever that put this on you tube...nice one.

  • the police headlined this concert and he introuced u2 as an avareage band from ireland

  • pretty awesome even back then.can't believe i wasn't even born.would of loved to have seen them in my home town.isn't adam shit cool!

  • waww bono!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Does anyone have this without the studio recording??

  • ya .. .id like to see hear the live version with this!

  • I've heard the actual audio bootleg of this performance - I had a copy of the gig, but I haven't heard/seen this performance on video, except this studio-over-video version.

  • If someone has an mp3 of the bootleg they can easily replace the studio dub in this video with the actual live audio...

  • I was there aswell and thats great, but what doing my head in is that I know I saw them in Galway 6-9 months earlier in what i thought was the Seapoint ballroom in Salthill but it now transpires it may have been the Claddagh Hall which is about a mile away near to central Galway.Does anyone have this information to hand and or could direct me to it,thanks in advance,David Walls

  • Love that early stuff....they were headed for greatness!

  • too bad the studio recording kicks in ..

  • What is Bono doing with those dance moves!?!

  • I was at this gig. It was actually a Police concert. Supporting bands if I remember correctly were U2, Q-Tips (Paul Young's band at the time) and Squeeze (Jools Holland's band)

  • Not forgetting the legendary John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett who also played their classics "Cor Baby that's really free" and "Look out for the flowers, coz I'm sure they're gonna get you, yeah"

  • Gee. The chicks in that crowd are sexy.... LOL

  • Well it was 27 years ago so imagine what they'd look like now. I can't believe it's so long ago. I was there. It was just after Borg had beaten McEnroe in the greatest Wimbledon final ever. Today the Police are pensioners, Paul Young appears on celebrity chef shows, Bono is an honorary English knight, there's a motorway running through where that concert took place, and some of those hot chicks could be grandmothers.

    Makes you think.

  • Yup. It does. I was jokeing by the way.

  • The only really HOT chick is the blond holding the fence at 2:30 - stunner.

  • You are correct. Actually I met an older chick who claimes to have been at that concert. I will not give the details. ; )

  • you are both full of shite...wanking is as close as you ever get!

  • Well, why don't you take a long luscious lick of my nuts ma'am. : )

  • sounds rather less than 'luscious'...

  • I am not a perv. Also you have a sense of humor. I like that. : ) Maybe someday? LOL

  • must be pretty good sized for a 'long, luscious' lick, then. Now that I've reconsidered...hahaha! good one.
