In an interview with the Hon. Desmond Guinness, he informed me that following the Police concert in 1980 some people broke into the residential property and sprayed graffiti on the walls and that is the main reason he decided to stop allowing Leixlip Castle as a venue for outdoor concerts, thus the birth of Slane as the number two outdoor concert venue in the World
Actually, I was in Ireland that year during the summer with my parents to see my relatives > I've gone every summer my entire life and I'll be there this coming July as well. I can't wait ;)
U2 kinda sucked that day, no one was impressed except for the 100 fans up front who then threw bottles at the Police. The hit Stuart kit and he stopped the show saying its those U2 fans down there. He came to the front of the stage and pointed them out !
Squeeze played also and I forget who else. This is NOT the original audio.
its unbelievable that they only formed the band 4 years before and edge had to learn how to play.you could say he learnt pretty fast. easily the best live band ever
From 1976-1981, Leixlip castle was my local castle/music venue, i sold band merchandise, specifically "U2" pencil cases to get a free ticket into this gig!..gotta love you tube!
U2 were playing support for The Police this day. It was near my house so I cycled over(aged 8) and a kind security guard let me in for free, telling me to be careful. I remember someone threw a bottle at Sting!!
U lucky sod! My mum wouldn't let me go even though my cousin played with the Virgin prunes around then so we sorta knew them - and I was a MASSIVE Police fan! (He said they would never play Ireland again after that bottle incident - and they didn't until the reunion tour!) I did see them in the Dandelion market in 1979 though!
@daraghcassells; That is brilliant, I was there mid crowd in the middle, do you remember the Smells Angels, forty of them, everyone got outta the way?
The security I saw did not appear to be kind, there were loads of blokes trying to get in for nothing.
@daraghcassells , we probably raced each other on our bikes at some stage, i was 10, i fell in love with sting and the police that day, and ive never looked back!
I was at a U2 gig organised by Dublin's Trinity College Students' Union in October 1979. It took place on a Friday night in the Junior Common Room (JCR) and about 200 people turned up. How quickly things changed for the band in the months after that.
Happy days indeed! That was a craking day out in Leixlip, supporting The Police.
U2 wiped the floor with 'em! Pity you've not been true to the footage by leaving it "as is", without the dubbing over of the original Tick Tock single recording. Have it on cassette here anyway! ;-)
How many years was Tick Tock No 1 in the Fanning Fab 50?!!!!
ColmEFC, this is the 'as is overdub' the way this video was released by the U2 camp, or some other body, way back in the 1980's. I've had this recording as is since 1992 which I got from a world class U2 collector.
This clip is a fraud! The audio is from a studio recording, except at the very beginning and at the very end. At 3:02 you can see Bono yelling into the microphone and you don't even hear him. There are numerous times that you hear backing vocals but no one is singing into the microphones. It sounds like someone spliced a studio audio recording on top of a live video. Also, it sounds like someone put crowd noises(cheering) on top of it. Someone really tried hard to deceive everyone but it failed.
Yes you're correct. But back in 1980, this was the official video for their first single on Island Records. It's a shame, because U2 have almost always been better live than on record. U2 are easily the best live band I've ever seen. Probably the best live band in the history of rock and roll.
IF YOU LISTEN , IT IS ALMOST THE PRE CURSOR TO " THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" THE LYRIC AND BEAT ETC.. almost like eno loved this track and wanted to expand on it.. I LOVE IT SO MUCH..
bono vox/ i dig you!!!! (was influenced by you when I was a teen.)
Actually, I think that U2 has always been a great band (the greatest, for me). Bono is a excellent singer, performer and he's full of charisma. However, Boy, War, Achtung Baby and Zooropa, are, for me, superior...
Jesus Christ this makes me almost want to cry. Just a good band -- bare bones -- no big stage props or crazy lighting --- just the **MUSIC** brought all those people there. FANTASTIC!! thanks for posting.
I think heaven for me might just be an eternal U2 concert.
They are probably even closer than then as they have been together for so long without a break-up: What an achievement in and of itself! I don't think they would agree with you.
I agree partially with you. They probably are good friends but, musically speaking, it seems that Adam and Larry had more influence at the beginning then they have now (especially their first three records). I don't mean to be nostalgic, though, as I still prefer them in the nineties.
I was there too but Skafish didn't play. They were cancelled at the last minute even though the band were ready to go on. I mostly remember some moron throwing a bottle which smashed all over Stewart Copeland's drumkit & stopped the gig for a while.
it was maybe 28 years ago, for me is a long time but i like very much u2. In my High School i write sometimes a article of u2, the name of the newspaper is Mameli Magazine. P.S u2 are the best in the world!!
