I heard Mr Dolby say in an interview that the man (men?) speaking in spanish in the backround dialogue in the beginning of 'wreck of the fairchild' is actually cockpit recordings from a Brazilian passenger jet just before it crashed
@starbearry The Folkker Fairchild was a prop plane, and Thtomas Dolby stated that the spoken part was from a retired Argentinean pilot that got talked into the overdub after TD bought a Jaguar saloon from him out of the newspaper!
Total respect for Mr. Dolby. Original,Inspired, Genius etc . FYI, I am a professional keyboard player, singer and producer and whenever everything starts feeling a bit bland, I play something by TD and the world is wonderful again.Thank you so much, Thomas Dolby, for your brilliance . And than you "SplitTheBeam" for the fab info for fans of TD.
The Airwaves here - never heard a song that SOUNDS better than this, and no-one ever comments on the Dolby vocals but they are a hugely original and accomplished element of his work. However, if I could only have one Dolby song for keeps it would be Screen Kiss - these songs are truly masterpieces that stand alone, incomparable.
As of July 2009 The Golden Age of Wireless is now available on CD with the full original U.K. track listing, including The Wreck of the Fairchild. It also has a hatful of bonus tracks including 'One of Our Submarines', 'Blinded Me With Science', the original guitar version of Radio Silence, plus a big bunch of Demos.
Comes packaged with notes on each song from TMDR himself and a DVD of 'Live Wireless' with a remastered soundtrack.
This album will be re-released as a two cd set wilth all the original songs and their various remixes sometime this year. Check out Dolby's Oct. or Nov 08 blog on his official website where he talks about it.
Glad to hear the long version of this song again. It was released in the US on the 5 song vinyl EP. "Blinded By Science," but did not have the "Wreck of the Fairchild" sequence at the head. I've got the disc somewhere in storage, great to hear it again. Thanks for the post and the info!!!
I just bought the original UK release LP on eBay to get these two tracks. But I was blown away by the rest of the album - one of the best albums I've ever listened to!
One tidbit, though - I think the transition between "Fairchild" and "Airwaves" is actually a little longer on the LP than over here.
I first heard Dolby's One of our Submarines on the radio in 1982 and was blown away (but didn't know it was him at the time. Unfortunately I did not look into the album because I associated it with Blinded Me with Science. A friend, to whom I introduced One of our Submarines a while back, bought the Age of Wireless recently and introduced me to Airwaves which blew me away. BTW, the Wreck of the Fairchild blows me away as well. Thank you!!
Manu Chao owes a thing or two to Thomas Morgan Dolby Robertson...

Some thing in there reminds me of the theme to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (BBC).
