also with the blower on a little bit while running, helps the fire burn faster.

running with the blower on just a crack opened, helps to blow some of the soot and ash out, and also as long the crew had stopped. one of them could of checked the ash level in the ash pan to see if the ashes were up to the grates to prevent air from coming in underneath the grates.
