  • Yea I do agree with mesaman yankie or ppl frm USA talk n talk n talk drives me mad when trying to learn, but hey wats a voice for :) nice playn ur singn is not blue'sy but post a pearl jam song one like given to fly ul get hits fella :) honesty is the best way

  • SHUT UP & PLAY !!!,,SHUT UP !

  • You have a great voice for moanin' the blues. Thanks for the lesson.

  • well said man

  • anyone tell me what the finger picking is??? driving me nuts!!

  • good video man, i'd just like to say i wholeheartedly agree with you, blues cannot be captured in wrote form, you have to feel it with your heart and soul. good tutorial man.

    Jy

  • Man, that was so true about the Blues .. There's nothing more naked than a Blues artist. Me I like to think of it in this way, If Jazz is my wife then the Blues might as well be my mistress, and Rock our love child. Keep howlin' man !

  • is johnny grave your real name?

  • i love how traditional blues players do there own thing even if they do a cover song they still do there own version changing the guitar and vocals

  • @weathered79... I love that, too. It's about personal expression, not about how well you can memorize notation or copy a song note-for-note. Unless you are on a cruise ship doing Mustang Sally.

  • forgive me for asking a simple question but what is the strum progression you use during the song at 2:10? i know the lick just fine, but i cant figure out how to strum for the simple part.

  • someone for the love of god please post a link to a tab that is this version....

  • Hahaha... I'm glad you think its simple. Thanks for the video bro

  • Jonny, give the video of your right hand on catfish blues... plz

  • I'm just getting to have a closer view of guitar styles, and thru the black snake moan i knew a hole new area of explaining something that is the music for me. Your explaining is good for such children who just cant feel what an old man can feel about the life, so mush feeling stuck inside, pain, and no sorrow, just sadness and happyness. Thank you very much, best video in youtube after Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole 'IZ' 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' video . Have a life that you cant be shame on... P

  • decent guitar man

  • hey bud could you make a vid that has you playing that song completely, it doesnt have to be fast or anything, its a good song, you play very well. another song you might like is ( man of constant sorrow) and also in the movie black snake moan at the end that song ( this little light of mine) he played that song awesome.

  • There already is a video of him playing the full song.

  • why is it always the white boys that have to remind the world how to play the blues.

  • haha!

  • @thiswall Would you rather let blues music die out? Besides, anyone can have "the blues." Therefore, anyone can play it.

  • I dont now why, buy you remind me of David Gilmour.

  • Jonnygraves - I hope you ignore those negative comments - they are ill-informed and therefore worthless. Thanks for the upload - you opened a couple of doors for me. One suggestion that makes sense is to write down the tabs - and the alt tuning - and leave it up for a minute or two.

    Nice work. Cheers NF.

  • ok I've watched like six of your videos, you're good

but seriously cut all the shit and just get on with it,

we don't want to hear you talk for 4 minutes

  • wow im too new to do this cause it was done to fast but im sure sombody did

  • dood this vid is very good but you can just do tabs in notepad or just post them in the comments maybe..

  • blah blah blah

  • that's a grat video, but do you think that you can go over the finger picking slower, it was hard for me to follow and do that. if you can do another how to pkay video that you show it slower, I would really appreciate it...great job!

  • Thank you for posting this. it was also fun to learn this without tabs. I really felt the blues when i played this : )

  • cheers bro just what i needed

  • Well done video, glad there are people out there that get the real meaning behind this beautiful style of music. Thanks for staying true to the spirit of the old masters. The blues never dies...

  • Now that's a great comment. It's always nice to find people who appreciate the blues. THAT is good music.

  • Thank you for the leson. I don´t understand very well spoken english, but I have been able to understand how to play this song. Good Vid.

  • Is this tuning the same as 'drop d'?

  • nope. Drop D is DADGBE-- you just drop the 6th string down one whole step. the tuning i'm using here is DADF#AD. it's called open D.

  • Well spoken words friend.

True blues can never be expressed with tablature.

It just needs to be felt.

  • damn right, brother. glad someone understands.

  • whats the strum i can do what the left hand is doing but the right hand i havent a clue how to do that or what strings to hit :)

  • keep an eye out for my fingerpicking lesson video. i'm posting it in a couple of days, and it should give you an idea of what i'm doing.

  • cool thx i will check back in couple of days :) btw your cover of this song is great :)

  • dude you look like david gilmour!

  • what is the pick rhythm you use?

  • what rhythm? seriously, i don't even know. double-thumb, i guess?

  • Great description of the blues at the end! Thanks for the tuning as well! I couldn't figure how to play it for the longest time, I had never even thought of trying a different tuning! I can usually figure stuff out pretty quickly but i had a hard time with this one! DADF#AD makes perfect sence! Thanks man!

  • what is the tuning ano its drop d on ther first three but what about g b and e

  • it's not drop D, it's open D... big difference, and you'll see why. open D is DADF#AD, so when you strum all the strings open, you get an open D chord. drop D is a little different-- DADGBE, so you're still not in a completely open tuning. hope that helps!

  • I'm with you apart from the picking. Could you give a string order of picking? Please, thanks!

  • Isn't DADF#AD commonly used with slide guitar as well?

  • absolutely-- open D and open G are kind of the main pillars of slide guitar. there's a lot of various open tunings out there, but those two are the most conducive to slide playing, i feel.

  • Your a ledgend thanks very much!

  • thanks, I appreciate it!

  • i have the jimi hendrix version its MIND BLOWING. the thing is he plays a whole step down DGCFAD

  • sounds like neil young or crosby stills and nash

  • what tuning does that put it in... not open A cause thats capo 2nd, and THANKS A MILLION

  • no prob. capo 1st is the key of Ab. what you might be hearing is a case of tape distortion. a lot of times, the tape used in field recordings winds up being slowed down just enough so the key of the song drops a half-step. happens all the time.

  • if you knew what tuning robert petway's version is in I would worship you, its one of the greatest songs of all time, If only i could figure out what tuning it is in...

  • if you mean the old recording from "cool blues," you're looking at open G tuning (DGDGBD), with a capo on the first fret. the rhythm is a simple 1-2 bounce a la "jumper on the line." good digs, mate.

  • Robert Petway's version is in standard tuning, played out of E position, with a capo on the 4th fret.

  • THX from Germany...

  • what bout the part of the movie where he goes like ' i havnt played for anyone in a really long time ' then he plays on his purple guitar and sometime in the song he goes like ' i calls it the black snake moan '. was it just made for the movie or does it have a name?

  • the groove part of that song is from a song called "black snake moan." it was written by Blind Lemon Jefferson in the 1920's. it' a really haunting song, and Samuel L. did one helluvajob singing it, too.

  • Thanks. I looked it up. It's great, but not as good as Samuel's.

  • Well said at the end of the video.

  • excellent representation of the blues, bravo

  • how the hell has no one viewed this or commented... its a dam shame

  • well, now you have. thanks for solving my conundrum!
