does anyone know what kind of equiptment will giv me a cleaner sound with the tascam dp-01 what kind of equipment will connect to the tascam as far as recording equiptment? anyone know
I am envious of you Tapewolf. I am mixing old school, but using an Otari Radar II. No computer screens no editing software. Would like to get an MX5050 but that TSR-8 looks pretty sweet!! Keep it alive, where do you get your tape ATR?
Yes. Monitoring on speakers would require all kinds of jiggery-pokery to minimise the room sound, which I don't really have space for in this house :-S
That's one hell of a setup you got there, and you look like a mad scientist running around in there! I'll bet you can get some hellacious sounding recordings with that equipment.I just picked up a Tascam 2488neo,but I'm thinking about also getting a reel to reel setup so I can also record old school analog style.
I work with tape on a regular basis. I know what I'm saying. At any rate, I'm talking about the MIXER which starts to lose its linearity around +6dB to +9dB on the meter (believe me, I've tested it). So if you set it so the levels in the mixer to PEAK at +6dB, the sound will be cleaner. I guarantee it. The manufactuerers of lower end mixers like to lie about how much headroom they have and they start to distort WELL below the clipping point.
@wado1942 where have u you learn that gearslutz? : ) i record sooooo hot comes out hot... i record soooooo low it comes out Hot !!! i record medium it also comes out HOT !!
No, I have the ability to listen to what I'm doing. You have to control the level comming into the mixer through the input trims to avoid distortion. Believe me, the sound will be worlds better if it PEAKS at around +6 to +9 on the buss peak meters when you're mixing.
Yes, the 32 is a bit beaten up and it'll probably cost more than it's worth to get it up to spec. I use it occasionally for flanging and suchlike. I don't really see anything burgundy, though - do you mean the red TL Audio compressor below the picture frame?
The 'monitors' are far to the left, and are really just a pair of domestic speakers. I usually mix with headphones, which does bring issues of its own, but at least avoids having to reshape the room.
I forgot to mention - the music is a score for a somewhat tense scene in the DMFA webcomic. It was used in the 'Recipe for Disasters' soundtrack, which will hopefully be appearing here as a video/slideshow in a few months.
The equipment list can be found at dougtheeagle dot com - for advice, it might be an idea to ask around at a BBS like the one at homerecording dot com which has its own analogue section if that floats your boat. A PC is the cheapest and arguably easiest way, but I wanted to work on tape... just because, I suppose.
Well, that is kind of the point - something you don't see every day, and all. Besides, it makes for a lot more interesting footage than clicking on "Render" and waiting for the progress bar to complete...
@dtfann03 nah is not old..... you old... the old is new again.... that's how you know how old you are when you see kids down the street wearing the same thing u use to wear... and u go>>>>>> that shit its old hahaha : )
My Tascam 32 was sick and I needed a machine quickly, so I got the Revox. It is the high speed version, though. I don't like the piece-of-string tension system in the '32. You probably saw it under the other TSR-8 though :P
There's not much that can be done about that... the room is long and thin. In any case, I don't actually use it for this kind of full mixdown often enough to make the hassle worthwhile...
nice setup... nice soundz.

Looks like you need a remote for your Revox 2 track and an auto-locator....Too much walking! :)

I'm using RMGI SM911 mostly, some Zonal 700 and some new-old-stock Quantegy 406 which I managed to get a good deal on (£60 for seven reels of 1/2").
ATR is horrifically expensive (£97/reel) and doesn't have many resellers here. RMGI has a few quirks but works for me and is about half as much.
Zonal are still making 1/4" stock but it's only available in the UK I believe.

Typo - that was £60 for 14 reels (two boxes of 7!)

@tapewolf what type of headphones do you use?
1MartinD28 2 years ago
@tapewolf So does the sound that is heared in the video actually come out of the headphones? Man, you must be deaf! ;-)

Cool example. Your levels are WAY too hot for that mixer though. You'll get cleaner sound running lower.

if he's recording the mix to a tape, you WANT to hit the tape hard goober.

That looks like a Watkins Copicat under your mixing desk there! Is she working alright? Bless those little echo machines!
syd1973 3 years ago
It is indeed. Slightly beaten up, I'm afraid, but pretty much indispensable. Nearly all the vocals are going through it these days.

nice setup.. but theyve done so much since the reel machines man haha
crapslap123 3 years ago
Well, a video of me clicking 'Mix and Render' and then twiddling my thumbs would hardly be as interesting, now would it ;-)

good for you for keeping the old days alive. I'd love to get some analog stuff when i get some extra dough. Totally fun, and totally worth it.

I love analogue stuff. Where are your monitor speakers? The music sounds like 1980's political thriller music.

A B77 for mastering?
I compared the B77 to an Akai GX-630D Pro (2-track HS) and Tascam T32 and the B77 lost the fight ;)
