  • Love your video, and voice amazzinnngg!

but whats your strumming pattern ?

  • Def would like a video on the strumming pattern

  • G C Em D, easy version.

    i covert this one also..

  • Sounds real good!

  • great job!

    one critiszm. haha

im a singer too so ik wat im saying, but hey you dont have to listen to me its just critiszm. i cant spell :P

anyway when you sing the higher notes (almost the whole song haha) you are goin into head voice wich is fine just you should open youre mouth more when its really high. it really helps u push out that note.

  • ahh this tutorial is amazingggg.

    what are the strumming patterns??!?!

  • how do you strum it :/ ?

  • I wish you explained how you were strumming because it sounds golden.

It would be very appreciative if you could tell us the strumming patterns.

  • sorry to bother again i meant the Bm

  • @jonnywaterz

I love the voicing of this one- but it's not the way that JM plays it at all:

    Bm: x240322

It's easiest to bar with the pointer finger (like an AM) if you want to do a hammer on to the Bm.

  • could u give me the tabs for the F#/D and the A pls thnx

  • @jonnywaterz - Relative to the capo, these are the versions of the chords I'm playing:

    Em: 022030

    F#/D= 200230

    A: X02230

  • nice guitars skills adam!!

  • John Mayer- Assassin Music Video Now On Youtube!

  • dude ever tried goin on american idol?

  • ahh beautiful. :)

  • thanks... love the song!!!!!

  • i think this is a really good tutorial but you probably should of added where to put your fingers for each cord (not everyone knows what a G, A, D, Bm is) also you should of put in whats the strumming and picking pattern

  • - guitarist B+

    - vocals njah

  • hey i really like the guitar but no to be mean but your voice is a little off. Its not that its not hitting the note, its just that your voice sounds to scratchy for this song. But i'm not being mean i'm just saying I myself sound like a walrus crying when i sing lol. but your an awesome guitarist though.

  • hell yeah bro, killer cover, i cant learn it from u tho, too fast bru lol

  • Daaaammmn. You are AMAZING!!

Brilliant voice, the sound quality is insane, the guitar is awesome...

    Crazy :)

  • Excellent, I just finished watching the movie, and heard the guitar at the end so I found your vid and now I can play it too! Thank you, and youtube.

  • how do u play the F#/D chord:S

  • Great tutorial, man! Just sounds like some of those notes are almost a little too high for you to hit without going falsetto. Awesome job nonetheless!

  • I just finish and thx u dont know how happy i am

  • 2:46 srry thats just a link so i can return to where i started

  • your pretty damn gooooooood :)

  • Nice buddy :) great job!!

  • your voice is awsome. damn man...its really refreshing

  • if you could do it stronger and less breathy, it would be five star.

  • You voice is amazing :)

  • ohmygod your voice is awesome! :D

    sooo good!

  • nice voice bro btw u look like adam sandler.... lol great job

  • i was just thinking the same thing XD

  • In response to all the Adam Sandler talk . . . .

    SLOPPY JOES . . . SLOPPY SLOPPY JOES . . .

  • OMG hahahahaha youre Adam sandler twin ! lol

  • you look like adam sandler lol

  • haha yeah he does

  • would love it if you made a video focused on the strumming and finger picking, in slow motion...!:)

  • wow.....:O

  • hahaha right! ;)

  • everything was perfect except for two things,, 1st: U havent taught the beginning strumming pattern,, u knw? like the picking! plz atleast send them to me or make another turorial JUST for that strumming :) thanks

    2nd: how did u play the A chord ? :S

  • Please don't sing.

  • his voice is awsum!,, he shuldnt whisper! he should sing loud! i love his voice! so rough!!

  • do you need a capo? cause i dont have one :)

  • how do you play the b minor chord? when i try it sounds funny

  • easy version?

2nd fret: first finger 5th string middle finger 4th string

  • this was awesome u got a good voice but mostly i liked the guitar

    u r awesome

  • great husky voice man! needs improvement though. great job anyway

  • wow that was amazing! good job

  • for the intro and verses instead of going d,g,b minor,a. you have to do d,g,d,a

but besides that it was good

  • love ur voice! goddamn!

  • good job!

  • i dont understand ur strumminggggg

    :(

  • hes just strumming up and down

with flare its easy listen to the beat

  • cool beans thansx

  • wow your voice is perfect for covering this song im impressed

  • GOOD JOB

but u need to work on ur voice

  • your voice isnt my favorite...but u did a good job with the guitar part...and the teaching...!

  • Wonderfully done (and I loved your singin' hunee, right on). However, the instruction was too short, too quick for me. If you do a second one, that's the only thing I would ask for (not all are as fluent as you). Thanks so much for doing this and sharing.

  • absolutley fantastic

  • Yeah! Good!

    What the tab, plz?

    (or the chords)^^

  • i love ur voice =)

  • awesome... and very instructive too :)

  • well done lad haha :)

  • i *love* your voice

be confiden with it and sing out and dont try and make it sound like anyhting else :) cus its awesome :)

and thanks so much or the tutorial, im a beginner and its really hard to find a way to learn songs i love!

  • great cover! i love ur voice as well :D

  • Dude - Make sure the camera can see both hands and your fingers when you are playing.!

  • Thanks for the tutorial. I noticed in the video he played without the capo. Is the capo to make it easier or to stay in standard tuning? Thanks again.

  • I use the capo here so you can so the signature lick while playing the chords. John just plays the chords, and if you want to do the real version of the lick, the link I have in the video teaches you that. So basically I just use the capo here to make it sound full for the solo player.

  • Thanks alot dude....I've only been playing for a few months but think I can get this down with practice and btw your 3x5 was beastly

  • thanks- 3x5 is one of my favorite songs to play!

  • Man, you have a good voice, very much like mayer. Ignore that other dick.

  • theres nothing wrong with his voice, lay off

  • You've got to make best with what you're born with.

  • the thing i just do not get is that I think the majority of people who are into mayer's new stuff are pretty intelligent when it comes to good music.. such as skill, lyrics, and difficulty..

but this song is one of the worst song i've heard in a long time.. just read the lyrics sometime.. contradicts itself throughout, and is so fucking annoyingly repetitive.

  • Really? Well with all of your wisdom and intelligence could you please enlighten us and explain where there are any contradictions in the lyrics? Because i like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent person yet i see no contradictions anywhere in the lyrics. So i ask, do you say this solely to be a complete jerk and diss a very good song or is your statement actually founded in some sort of truth? Because unless you can give a reasonable response i'm going to have to go with the former.

  • Dude, shut the hell up

  • Awesome man, keep it up, nice skills.

  • GREAT job man. How long did you practice this song

  • Not long at all . . . maybe 20 minutes before I did this. It explains why I'm looking off at the computer screen for lyrics.

  • very good.. i was wondering if you could post the formations for the last 2 chords... the b minor with the f sharp, and the A. Also, do you know if it is possible to finger pick it with those chords? Thanks

  • great u actually sound like him

    but a lil scratchy

  • awesome. =)

  • lovin the DMB stylin at 1:27, thanks dude!

  • verryyyy nice indeed but heres a sugession..

use ur voice instead of blowing =)

  • Very nice dude.

  • i love him he's so humble..lol

btw i think it's called capo not capel. and it's not that expensive. though the songs's a bit harder to play without it cause you're gonna have to use you pointing finger to sub for the capo.

  • yeah, is there any way of playing the song without the capel?

  • there is

i don't think john mayer uses one

but no-one seems to put out that version

  • is it possible to play it with oust the capel?

    cuz i dont have one.

  • You should invest in one. They're not that expensive . . the 'clip' one that I have is about $15 and you can buy a strap on one for less than $5. Anyway . . . if you want to play it without a capo, the easiest way would be to just strum these chords.

    BbMaj-688566

    EbMaj-x6888xx

    Gm(bar)-355333

    FMaj(bar)133211

That's the main riff. I'll do the rest later.

  • dude this shiit tight good

  • u play the guitar awesome but i think ur voice needed to be more like how u talk.its kinda soundeed like u were loozing ur voice but still awesome!

  • bueno

  • i would love you if you sent me the tabs ! ^^ i dont know chord names

  • you forgot to show how your strumming

  • pretty solid man.. im just starting to play... check out some stuff.. jondutchmusic on myspace..

  • voice did sound a lil raspy and you were a lil breathy but it all still sounded very good

  • well thank you very much.

  • wats the bm hes talkin about

  • i've watched a few 'Say' tutorials. Yours is the best so far. Thanks.

  • very niiice!! love your sound...

  • ur voice and guitar playing are very good =D

  • Nicee one :] x

  • voice sounded good

  • At the end, when you were singing "Say what you...," it sounded very Dave-like. I quite enjoyed your interpretation of the song, although your voice is a bit rough/raspy for this particular song.

  • That's the nicest way of putting it . . and I agree that I was really breathy when I sang this. I should do it over again, but whatever.

  • I think (personally) for a song like this a raspy sound is the best makes u feel it more...if that makes anysense =D

  • don't redo it

    this is already very good

  • john mayers voice is "raspy" and "breathy"

  • good guitarr but o.k voice ur good thou =)

  • :)i like it

  • aynone have the strum pattern

  • ok- so 6th string being the low E . . . this is what I'm doing

    D chords: 41241242

    G chord: 61261262

    Bm chord- 51251252

    A- 51251242

Sometimes I hit the 2 and 3 string when it says 2. I pick it sloppy on purpose to give it a more textured and full sound. (hence all the muting

  • I'm having some trouble with the strum/picking.

  • that was awesome.

What is the strumming pattern though however?

and how are you plucking the strings for the beginning part?

  • great job. thanks for the instruction.

  • you have the weirdest vibrato in your voice... not that it's bad...

  • lol i know what you mean... it has its own rhythm.

  • kinda like the lion off the wizard of oz... lol...

  • bwahaha, good comparison lol.

  • hey thanks a lot for this...keep pickin, you're great!

  • did not expect that voice from you dude! nice though!

  • bro mate that was nice playing, i really like you timing when you play its spot on ! yeah that vedio has helped me learn to play the song

  • thanks bud good tutorial helped me learn

  • That was the best one I have found for someone teaching it, I have been searching for a few weeks now for chords typed out over the lyrics, but the way you showed it was great, Thanks so much, : ) Tammy

  • watch the wispering dude. i no your trying to keep it a little quiet but you have a little bit of a raspy voice so show it..it will still sound good

  • Dude, thanks sooooooooo much for doing this tutorial!!!!!

You are a talented player also.

How long have you been playing?

  • Awesome, by the way I absolutely love the John Lennon poster behind you in the video...lol

  • Oh my gosh. I adore your singing voice...it's fantastical.

That raspy thing you got going on is Awesome.

Plus I see a John Lennon poster in the background.

    Good man.

  • haha he is playing the same a he is just putting a bar over it with one finger instead of using three

  • hey....that was awesome...

ive just starting out on the guitar (8 months ago). I can handle playing the chords ok....but when you strum it sounds so much better...

sounds like your plucking at strings whilst strumming which adds a nice little kick...and it almost flows a lot more smoothly..

    any tips? thanks

  • First of all, thank you very much. Secondly, I've been doing this for a long time . . . although I've strayed from melodic songs like this. (I've been too carried away with guitar solos). But anyway, my only tip is to learn how to play EVERY song that you're minorly interested in. I've gone through many milestones (that I considered at the time) from DMB's "The Stone"--John Mayer's "Neon"---Hendrix's "Castles" and now working on Scofield. I can't tell you how much fun it is, and stick with it!

  • the guitaring and singing are good but if you REALLY want to be like john mayer you gotta squinch your face up way more!

  • haha- I don't think there are any note bends in this one. Great comment though.

  • Sounds good. You do the song justice.

  • did u learn this by ear?

  • Yeah. Sorry, I haven't found any tabs yet that sound really good for solo acoustic. I'm aware that I'm not doing it completely accurately . . . but I figure it's enough to get by and doesn't kill the song for the average listener.

  • yeah, you did a good job on it. thanks for the tutorial

  • What is the strum pattern? Could you tell me how you pluck the strings? Also, your 'A' looks different from a chord book, so the strum is really important to know. Thanks.

  • Thanks. I'll go try it now - if my daughter will let me borrow her guitar!

  • ha..
