is the flying saucer okay for their backs? i ask this because my chin always has energy and i have health issues that don't allow me to play with her and make sure she's okay.
I have one of these and I'm wondering how to train my chinchilla to use it... I tempt her with a raisin and she can get like, one hop on it right, but then she sort of jumps in the middle of it and spreads her paws out so she's spinning around like one of those circus performers on a giant wheel that get knives thrown at them. I'll admit it's kinda funny, but she's not getting the idea that it's a running wheel. Any suggestions?
@Chinniedoodle not all chinchillas can be taught how to use these kind of toys unless taught to do so at young age. if shes to old, get her a regular running wheel! if she's young, give her time, she'll get the hang of it.
I had one of them wheels for my chins and it was too big for the cage, so after a couple of days i took it out and they started sulking on me and wouldnt take their daily raisin treat off me or anything, as soon as i put it back in, they were back to normal so ended up getting them a bigger cage, happy days :)
@Amy199able always make sure to go over any exorsize device and remove sharp or rough edges, especially if it is metal. Pays to not assume the factory did it right.
I have a wire condo cage and it isn't noisy. It fastens in 3 places.
This type of wheel works especially well for chins since you would need a hella big wheel for them to be able to run stretched out otherwise. (if the wheel isn't big enough it stresses their spine)
Regular wheels are fine for smaller critters as long as the wheel is big enough for the critter.
hello, i'm Carolina from Chile. i have 3 chinchillas and they don't have wheel because here nobody sells it. do you know a on-line store, where they ship this wheels internationally???
the edges don't get sharp do they? A lot of people recommend this, but I have heard that other metal wheels get sharp on the edges, is this true for the flying saucer? I have been thinking of getting one for my hedgehog, but I don't know if I should get plastic or not o-o He doesn't eat/chew on plastic though so it wouldn't really be a health hazard...
I've had my metal wheel for about 5 years, no sharp edges, easy to clean. At one point it did get squeeky and a friend took the middle part off and regreased the bearings and it's been great ever since.
When I had hedgehogs she had a different kind of wheel but man she would put the miles on it every night - pitter patter all night long. It was a wood and wire wheel as hedgies have soft pooos and it needed to be washed often.
It wasn't my first choice to be sure. I washed it regularly using a safe cleaner. She didn't chew so there was never an issue there. She would pace if the wheel wasn't in her pen.
i love watching the new chinchillas learn how to use it. at first they hop on it like it's another perch or something... but it moves! and when they get going they really get going. i would highly recommend getting one of these for your chin. I bought 2, one for each cage.
it depends on how tight you can screw it. if you have a cage, that's made only of grid, the wheel will wiggle and be noisy. but if you have at least one chipboard as a wall, it won't be loud
Much Much better, the plastic ones in store would never last with a chinchilla and being plastic would get chewed on as well. the plastic ones in the store are just a cheap copy and though the smaller sized ones might be okay for mice and hamsters, a larger sized chinchilla would destroy these in no time.
Accept No Substitute, the Metal Flying Saucer Exercise Wheel is fantastic and our chinchillas definitely agree.
i bought a excercise wheel for my two chinchillas but they dont know what the heck it is. can anyone please tell me what technique to use to get my chins to excercise so they can live long lives?
All chinchillas adapt and figure out the Flying Saucer wheel in their own time. their inquisitive nature is sufficient for them to figure out how to use it. most figure it out fairly quickly from almost immediately to a couple days.Occasionally you will find one that takes more time, our longest was almost 6 weeks, but once he did he was the biggest wheel showoff for a long time afterward.
I'm taking care of my friend's chinchilla next week. But I don't know much of those (cute ^^) little animal. I know they don't really like to be pet or to stay in their cage.
Are those animals have vicious nature (bite, pee, escape...) when they are not with their owner? If I let him out of his cage would it purchase me and bite me lol? Do they jump on you for no reason?
If you have any expérience to share (bad or good) it would be really helpful.
Well I'm sure you have seen now that you cared for your friend's chinchilla, in general, they are very sweet animals ^-^ I have a Chinchilla and it really depends. When you first get one, they are not that friendly but they are not vicious. It just takes a little time to have the Chinchilla bond with you. I really don't think that they would be vicious towards you even if you are not their owner. My friend cared for my Chinchilla once and all my Chin did was chew off my friend's mom's fake nail
How big is it? Thanks
