Excellent sir!, I have been trying to use bowdrills in vain the past few weeks, but was using a hardwood (beech) drill and a softwood (pine) fireboard. it seems following your instruction that i need to use softwood for both board and drill. i would be interested in your DVD, since i have tried for 45 mins without producing coals, and most other info here regards common woods found in north america. i need to identify trees in the north of england to get this to work :)
I used washing line as it has a plastic coating and doesnt fray though making your own chord is possible, I have made it in the past from stinging nettles though there are many ways and materials to make it, good luck
Naaaah, a lighter would be too short! Plus the cord from the bow would slip and the business end of the lighter would keep getting jammed in the hearth board.
this is real magic

So do I but this is a skill we have had for nearly a million years and we've lost it in only 200 years, one day we may need it again!!!
