this version sucks big time... and it's not the matter of comparing the vocalists. Anyway, it makes me fucking sick when I see comments like :"Ripper is better in hitting the high tones, and Barlow is better in singing low..." Anyone who knows even a bit of singing will know that the fact isn't in "hitting some hi/lo notes", the thing is in the interpretation of the song. And by that, with all due respect to Tim Owens, I think Matt Barlow has no equal. He left his trademark in IE
@TheMrFuckstick after the second chorus that riff was not palm muted on the a string notes and sounded way better on the original. Even the coming curse intro riff. Too much muting that won't let the melody in the riff breathe. I like the drumming on this version of the trilogy way better though. Can't please everyone I guess
dude dont care what noone of you say dont listen ripper i think you are way way better than barlow u kick ass whereas barlow just kicks the curve you fucking go ripper with those insanely high classic power metal vocals woot!
if ripper was a lottle bit more throaty and growly like matt, this would be the best. i like matt's tone, but the notes are better written on this. i'd like to hear matt do this version.
Ripper is really good until "The sacred few survive"... when it comes to low octaves, Matt just kicks ass! Ripper is not for low, deep voices.. hope Stu does it better, because without "hellish" voice Iced Earth simply lacks something... and that something is BARLOW :D
There are themes where Owens is great (really awesome is the glorious burden and even more the Gettysburg 1863 album !!! (especially High Water Mark song o.o)
But on the hellish and so on themes should definitely Matt Barlow be the vocalist!
Same with this song here. This song is much better by barlow in my opinion.
I like the old version but Ripper does it justice. His voice isnt as dusty sounding as Barlow and Ripper can sing the high's better. They both are great.
Barlow does the slow, dark singing better, which would be my guess for why Schaffer alter the song some, to take advantage of Owens higher intensity. Personally, I prefer Barlow, his ability to switch between different styles of singing brought out a greater range of feeling in the songs.
For faster songs that keep up the intensity throughout, Owens is definitely the better vocalist though.
Iced Earth shouldve just stayed with Ripper. Barlow is an awesome singer too but what was the point of coming back to just end up leaving the band again in such a short time.
I prefer the guitar and drum work here than the other one with barlow but i prefer barlow's vocals haha. tim is good don't get me wrong.but to me iced earth ain't iced earth without barlow in the band. same goes for schaffer. ain't iced earth either without him
idk why they felt the need to redo this an kill it...it was totally uncalled for...Ripper is a good vocalist but he should def NOT sing Barlow's songs :/
THE RIPPER IS THE BEST. BUT THE REASON I STARTED LISTEN TO ICED EARTH WA THE ORIGINAL BAND.I SAT FOR HOURS AND LISTED TO THE ALBUM ABOUT DAMION AND FRANKENSEIN AND OTHER HORROR CREATURES. SO COOL ALBUM, MADE ME LISTEM TO OTHER ICED EARTH ALBUBS.
iced earth should just keep owens and move on to a better career. thats just the way it is when it comes to singers and the music biz. pauldianno wa great but dickenson was better. look at them now. the truth has been spoken. owens should stay here or start. a band called the ripper it would do great and he could have any one he wanted to play in his groukp just do it. he ripper i can mak u sond like god i am the man to rum your sound., danny lee seymour, man.
Barlow all the way!He can be gracefull as well strong. To be a good singer in a band that has more than one "mood" you need that.No wonder john brought Matt back to the band.
@cliftonite187 They brought Matt back, because the old school fans kept bitching about Ripper. Im sorry, but Ripper is a better singer. You may prefer Barlow better, but thats different.
@jpaynecr Ripper is Better Singer'' Matt Sucks live and aint in the same League as ripper'' John Fired Ripper Because' Ripper Wanted to his Beyond fear'' and john wouldnt let him Write Songs'' John is a Punk Bitch Drunk
Matt is Good'' But Ripper Is Amazing Control Power And can Sing Anything'' he is the best Ever Ever Hands down
@cliftonite187 please'' John Brought matt Back' Because Ripper heart wasent' full into the band'' John is a dickhead 16 band members in Iced Earth' Ripper Wanted to do his own thing'' and didnt want to Sing Songs About StarWars' and Sifi Crap' Ripper voice in both i Iced Earth Albums' are the best vocals ever on any cd Epic
The original version is so much better, simply because the intro sounds so much better with just clean or acoustic guitars, it makes the distortion so much more powerful wen it does come in, and adds more contrast to the song. But it does sound cool a 4th lower.
@oberstul Just because human stupidity also will last forever, in a smart world everybody would realize they're both amazing and be greateful of being able to lsiten to their killer work.

why did Owens have to fuck this great song ??? i mean he's a good singer and has a great voice but the lack of feeling is the reason why he sucks there's no emotion in this.... Barlow has a great voice and also has something that Owens will never have , feeling , that's why Barlow is and will always be better than him....original version is the best....
The only thing you can blame Owens on is the vocals. He didn't write the song. Schaffer did. Yeah, Ripper's singing isn't like Barlow's, but what else were they going to do? Barlow left. Schaffer was stuck without a singer and half an album to do. To me, Owens is a great guy. He helped complete Glorious Burden and whatnot. Frankly, if he hadn't have come in, Iced Earth might've broken up right then.
Matt Barlow is my fucking hero, and he is and will remain to be "the" Iced Earth vocalist. But Ripper Owens did a very commendable job on this version, I actually liked it better than the original because it's way darker. The screams are flaming insane! It's expected that Ripper would sing it very differently because it's in a lower key (Jon used baritone guitars on all Overture of the Wicked tracks), Barlow wouldn't have sung it any different if he were to sing this song in this same key.
....i just hope that now with matt back jon stops improvising with these classic songs that made him and iced earth famous....
...and also i would prefer the judas priest fans stfu, stop messing with iced earth and stop spoiling matt's image with telling that rippy is "the singer that iced earth did not have".
believe me, gene adam and john greely could perform much better on these songs than tim did.
Different, but not bad. I miss Jimmy's bass playing though, so much better then the one on this version. the part at 2:42 - 3:12 was done badly IMO, theres a huge lack of power the original had.

In this order:
Best 'Prophecy' singer, Owens, because the way he sings the lyrics are more enticing
Best 'Birth of the Wicked' Singer, both of them, especially in the Duet version made by 666JSchaffer666 (look on the list to the right)
Best 'The Coming Curse' singer, Barlow, because his voice and method of singing are perfect for the 'apocalyptic' effect of the song.
Thumbs up, those who agree with me :)
