@xTheOxx You remember Reid talking about the Fort Hood shooter, and then saying Rand Paul would make us less safe? What do you think he was talking about?
Reid walks a fine line, I'll admit that, but he never explicitly sides Rand Paul with the terrorists. You could say he unfairly extrapolates the consequences of Paul's provisions, but he doesn't do what Rand Paul accuses him of doing.
My main point however is that Rand Paul does the exact same kind of thing. It others do it, he calls them shameless, but he has no problem doing it himself. I'm still waiting for a politician who can rise above that kind of thing.
Once again I find myself agreeing with this man and his father even though I violently disagree with him on most things. This was a good speech. @TheAcitizen95 A lot of Republicans in Congress support the Patriot Act, so he figured he could get them on board if he talked about how the law was a threat to gun rights.
I like how it's a lot of self-proclaimed men are out there pissing their panties in thought of terrorist attacks that rarely happen.
We need to man-up, and stop being fucking bitches, and rather die with their rights completely intact rather than sacrifice them for a chance of hopefully avoiding a rare event 99%+ won't ever experience.
If BRand Pol™ REALLY wanted to end these 3 provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act, he could have exercised his power as a US senator to place a hold on the bill, thus effectively killing it. However, his party's leadership told him to back down, so he did. Looks like he's just another partisan, grandstanding, self-promoter.
We must address:"How to get ppl to care about the Patriot Act?” No one cares. Look. Ppl feel no ownership in their govt so they stop participating—i.e., they stop voting. Give ppl a role. My suggestion—deputize all ppl to participate in the local “executive branch” through part time compulsory law enforcement. Consider a neighborhood citizen militia as ersatzpolizei, subcontracted by the mayor’s office. In such a model, citizens meaningfully balance legislative power by enforcing law themselves.
I was referring to his idiotic libertarian views on business regulation. The Constitution allows the government to regulate commerce. So, it's Paul who wants to re-write the law. You're just a member of the Ron Paul cult. But it doesn't matter because he'll never be president.
@dudev The Constitution allows Congress to regulate "interstate commerce". Keyword: "interstate". The Commerce Clause is meant to allow Congress to set standards for interstate transactions to make it easier. Congress can not tell a private business owner how to run his business, what his employment requirements must be, etc.
"Congress can not tell a private business owner..."
Apparently it can. Congress passes laws which affect both non-business owners and business owners. No where in the Constitution does it say business is immune to the law. And many of the pertinent laws have been ruled upon by the supreme court, the arbiter of what is constitutional and what is not. And the big hypocrisy is that businesses lobby congress for restrictions on their competition. The free market is a big lie.
@dudev "And many of the pertinent laws have been ruled upon by the supreme court, the arbiter of what is constitutional and what is not."
Nothing in the Constitution says that the Supreme Court is infallible, though Article 3, Section 2 of the Constitution does say "Court shall have appellate Jurisdiction, both as to Law and Fact, with such Exceptions, and under such Regulations as the Congress shall make."
It seems Congress does have the power to place statutory limits on SCOTUS.
Were you critical of the Supreme Court when it decided that businesses have the same rights as individuals? If they have the same rights, it follows that they have the same responsibilities. Libertarianism is a pie-in-the-sky philosophy of wishful thinking and childish idealism. It's the biggest myth that businesses even want a free market, since they routinely use Congress to restrict the competition and to gain subsidies. So how exactly would this free market be implemented?
@dudev There's no reason why business owners should want a free market. The consumers and workforce should want a free market, and the businesses should be forced to operate within the free market or fail. With the fear of failure comes an increasing effort to be a better business. When each business uses its own creative (non-fraudulent) methods of being the best in their industry, everyone benefits. Excessive regulations and policies like TARP and other bailouts undermine that.
I asked how this free market will be implemented. How exactly, when businesses don't really want it, when consumers want regulations, and when congress tries to pander to both sides? I call libertarians like Ron Paul impractical because their philosophy is not based in reality. It's all wishful thinking. It's all a big IF STATEMENT. How is this economic utopia going to come about?
@dudev It will happen when Congress quits listening to lobbyists, PACs, and special interest groups until after it has looked at the Constitution, specifically Article I, Section 8 (enumerated powers) and the 10th Amendment (all powers not specifically given by the Constitution to Congress or prohibited by it to the states belong to the states and to the people). Also, Congress needs to embrace more literal interpretations of the Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause.
@dudev I wouldn't be so pessimistic. The Tea Party may have been a load of crap in '10, but others have picked up the idea of liberty. States are starting to fight to reclaim the powers that Congress and federal agencies have taken from them. If the debt limit gets raised and Obama keeps spending at the current rate, people will wake up and start protesting the excessive borrowing and spending. If he gets involved in yet another country's domestic affairs, more people will oppose that.
More wishful thinking. The Supreme Court ruled businesses have the same rights as individuals. They can lobby congress and donate money to campaigns. How exactly is that going to change, when politicians get elected with help from voters and businesses, both of which want government interference (and help) in commerce?
And the US debt is not excessive compared with the GDP. The conservatives are just fear-mongering about that, to the detriment of their own constituents.
@dudev I agree with the Court's decision. Everyone, businesses included, has the right to lobby and to donate, but it is not true that politicians must rely on businesses for donations. Ron Paul recieves more than enough money from his freedom loving supporters.
"And the US debt is not excessive compared with the GDP."
Sure, but what does that have to do with Ron Paul's main platform of free-market economics? And how is Paul --a republican--going to go against his own party on the issue of the Patriot Act? Republicans are in favor of it and some think it doesn't go far enough. When liberals like myself were complaining about Bush's warrantless wire-tapping, conservatives were calling us unpatriotic and soft on terrorism. This is why Ron Paul will never be nominated. His own party rejects him.
@dudev Well, this video was strictly about the Patriot Act and arbitrary government power, which your other comment didn't mention.
It goes along with his free market beliefs because he sees freedom as one package -- civil liberties and economic liberties. So he'll be just as determined to stop bailouts of Wall St. banks as he is here against the Patriot Act.
Yes, a lot of Republicans, unfortunately, are in favor of it. Allen West, who was just elected in November, voted against it, though.
@dudev You shouldn't have been called unpatriotic for that. Dissent is patriotic no matter which party is in office.
Mitch McConnell is Kentucky's other Senator, and he was helping to block some of Paul's amendments. So you're right, Republicans will talk about "individual liberty," but when given the chance to show that, for the most part they fail. Ron Paul demonstrated that at the debate when he talked about heroin. "If you have the inconsistency, then you're really not defending liberty."
@P101794 You're right, Madison is credited with that quote and he said it much earlier than Jefferson, but Jefferson says pretty much the same thing in his inaugural address. “Sometimes it is said that man cannot be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the form of kings to govern him? Let history answer this question.”
I actually agree with Rand Paul on something. In this case he's one of the few trying to stand up for the Constitution; something Obama - whom I voted for - is not doing.
This was not a terrible speech, come on guys. you guys are making us liberals look bad. this is rand paul we are talking about, give him a break. he stood up for something great for once.
@newdimensionfilms He has his whole speech on his YouTube page. TPM clipped different parts of it together, so you could get a gist of what he was talking about.
According to the conservatives we became a far-left socialist country when Theodore Roosevelt (Republican) became president and gave government the right to preserve land; became a ultra far-left, socialist, communist country when FDR passed social security and many government programs still around; became an super ultra far-far-left socialist, communist, marxist country when LBJ passed his legislation; and is becoming a far-far-far-far left socialst, communist, marxist, statist under Obama.
Who the fuck wrote his speech for him? It was James Madison that said if men were angels government wouldn't be as necessary, not Jefferson. So much for all this founding fathers constitution stuff.
The bank panics of Feb/March 1933 and foreign exchange movements were in danger of exhausting the Federal Reserve holdings of gold.
Executive Order 6102 required U.S. citizens to deliver on or before May 1, 1933, all but a small amount of gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates owned by them to the Federal Reserve, in exchange for $20.67 per troy ounce.
Rand Paul is for "personal freedom"... unless you're a minority or have a uterus.
ALL registered gun owners should be investigated, medical records screened for mental illness, medications etc. Cut the loopholes, require background checks for all guns sales, INCLUDING gun shows. Make possession of a non-registered firearm a Felony, with a Mandatory Minimum of 25 years in prison. Clean out the right-wing kooks.
@MintV2 Are you for freedom of any kind? It's clear you're ok with letting the government trample the second amendment, which is what would be necessary to accomplish your goals. Are you OK with the Patriot Act?
@MintV2 Personally, I think it's time we start separating the issue of abortion with "womens issues" or a "woman's right to chose". No-one should have the right to perform abortions.
@MintV2 I was with you until you said: "Make possession of a non-registered firearm a Felony, with a Mandatory Minimum of 25 years in prison. Clean out the right-wing kooks."
@MintV2 "Investigate all registered gun owners"????? Why investigate people who legally obtained and registered their firearms? All the other things you suggested ALREADY EXIST (except for the gunshow loophole), you're clearly very ignorant on this topic. I'm a proud Obama-voting liberal, and a 2nd amendment right supporter. You're just parroting typical fat chick liberal anti-gun bullshit. You need to sit down and shut up. You suggesting registered owners should be investigated is INSANE.
@MintV2 Look what you just advocated. You think the government should investigate tens of millions of law-abiding citizens because of an object they possess. Why don't you look in the mirror?
This is a weak speech. There are plenty of better speeches that could have been given. The dig at FDR was absurd, the references to gun rights pathetic. Fuck you, Rand Paul. I think the Patriot act is an anathema to freedom: I don't think that because it allows the government to look into the mental health history of gun owners or because FDR confiscated some millionaire's gold in 1933 - baloney like that does not belong in this debate.
@MadDogOfist how does the governments intrusion into someone's house to confiscate personal property not a part of the debate? How did the government know who owned gold, and why is that any of their business to begin with? Immediately after Katrina, the government went door to door to confiscate registered gun owners guns "for their protection". What were those people supposed to use to protect themselves form looters? All of that is relevant.
@mnaughton11 FDR: The stock-piling of gold put the entire economy at risk, as they were still on the Gold Standard..
Guns: The treatment of citizens by the Bush administration during Katrina was reprehensible, focussing on 'looters' but not providing aid. However, the State of Emergency declared after Katrina removed ordinary protections. These were actions taken under a law separate to the Patriot Act when it was extant. Reference to it belongs in a different debate.
@WalkerFountain This is one of the areas where I can agree with progressives. That's why I like Glenn Greenwald, because he's so outspoken on civil liberties.
Like I've said elsewhere. Rand Paul is a batshit crazy right wing teabagger. But even a broken watch is right. . . twice a day. And on this issue, Paul is right.
Dems hated the Patriot Act just 4 years ago. The only Senator to vote Against the original Patriot Act was Russ Fieldgold Most republicans annoy me, but on this particular topic Rand Paul is right. The overall message will fall upon deaf ears guaranteed, but it's important for American people to realize that this country's political spectrum is not nor has ever been linear. It is one big circle where the most liberal and the most conservative can share the exact same views!
@tyt12327 my bad dude, was in a hurry that day! Feingold was a hell of a senator, i wish he would return to game cause the Dems could certainly use a guy like him!
If i was looking at the 911 emails i would say that this wired tapping would have worked. I don't see a way working within the protections that "good detective work" would have been able to protect against the action that was taken. The training of these hijackers were all taking action that would have been protected by probable cause. I might not like it but in the cases he cites i can see the defense of taking the action by government to do that things governments are charged with.
@java501 That argument is fine for the well intentioned in government. However, these protections are for those who will come along that aren't well intentioned.
@java501 if i want to kill you there is nothing you can do to stop me from planing and putting that plan into action. my success in my plot relies on a range of different variables. the patriot act only looks for those planning terrorism. its foolish. clinton kept us safe here in the usa without the patriot act. basically the same situation that bush faced. attack soon after the election and plans where put in place to protect the country. clinton did it without the patriot act remember that.
@sennapods "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants." said Thomas Jefferson to William Smith in 1787. Not naive, just fighting the good fight.
@vibrohm You know Rand Paul means "trawling." It might not be clear to some ppl here. But the image of spooks sitting at home alone stalking your facebook with KY in the other hand _is_ kind of funny.
@ninuxy That doesn't sound logical. American gun owners will never give them up willingly. They'll just turn us into criminals. I guess we would have to call those in favor of that radical communists or statists.
@cooperbry The fuck are you babbling about? Did you even comprehend the crux of my gist? Or just thought you can barge in here, bare foot, start skiing on everyone's piss!
Paul was trying to scare people off by associating the Patriot Act with decimation of the Second Amendment. Two distinct mutually exclusive topics.
@ninuxy I get what you're saying, but, it isn't logical. Gun owners aren't afraid of anyone taking their guns. So, your comment is nonsense. Oh and yeah, I can just barge in here and say whatever the fuck I want and there's nothing you can do about it asshole.
What he is saying is that the government cannot use gun records to target gun owners for any reason. Perfectly legitimate thing to say. Obviously not for you, but, who the fuck are you anyway...
@coperbry Gun owners flocked the rifle shops because bunch of conspiracy pundits sold the fabricated story that Obama is going to take away their beloved guns. Now you want to tell me that Paul's insinuation that "after Patriot Act, they will come for your guns" does not scare them off to sprint to the rifle shops to pile up on ammunition supply? Where have you been for the past 2 years?
If the government "cannot use gun records to target gun owners," then why on earth is he using that as a leverage to hammer the Patriot Act? It's because it frightens the gun-wielding psychopaths enough to agree with his view on the bill which has nothing to do with the Patriot Act in the first place.
Apparently, as you confessed, you ski bare foot on other's piss. Way to go to legitimize your stupidity.
@bradthompson86 And why would that be? This man is a far right maniac, obviously named after Ayn Rand(the founder of Objectivism, one of the most evil and selfish philosophical systems ever created and the precursor to Layvean Satanism). I am becoming more and more disillusioned with his dad lately.
Rand Paul is an asshole only looking out for himself.
@stigler30 Yeah... only looking out for himself by fighting against the patriot act for us..... interesting point of view.... oh and what a right wing maniac who wants to legalize drugs and end the wars.... Good logic big guy...
@bradthompson86 He's only fighting against the patriot act for reasons that relate to himself and himself only(or maybe his "blood" too). And Ron uses the idea of legalizing drugs and ending the drug war just to rope people in, it roped me in, luckily I found out how psychotic he is in reality and no longer support him, he wants absolutely no one no matter how bad off they are to be supported by the government.
Anthony Weiner: now that motherfucker is on the peoples side.
@stigler30 "to be supported by the federal* government" is what i think you meant to say. you need to look into ron paul again, he predicted everything thats happening now, years ago. he's the motherfucker that this country needs
@depletable I know the terrorists aren't gonna get me you fucktard. I fucking hate The Patriot Act and have hated it since day one, I am a stating my shock at a far right neo con fighting against it.
@MintV2 so you must enjoy failed economic, monetary, and foreign policies and less civil liberties. i dont really care if he gets the nomination or not (although i hope he does) but at least he's bringing some awareness of the problems to the american people, which is a start
@stigler30 Oh yeah that's right the government really helps out all those poor people..... Yeah, they just throw them in prison based on the color of their skin, gets them hooked on drugs as the CIA brings in the dope to this country, favors corporate interests always, puts flouride in the poor folks tap water, and just keeps them degraded and in slave mode.... Yeah we need more of that government with their golden heart and iron fist clamped tightly around us....
@ahblisschris it's ironic that their governing and economic philosophies play right into their hands, if they exist in the incarnation you imagine they do, which is unlikely. regardless, people pulling the strings would like nothing better than right wing philosophies in our minds, making us easier to control, and abolished governments worldwide, so that they can do whatever the fuck they want without having to answer to the collective voice of the people. libertarianism - divided we fall

Consider a neighborhood citizen militia as ersatzpolizei, subcontracted by the mayor’s office. In such a model, citizens meaningfully balance legislative power by enforcing law themselves.

Rand Paul, just another libertarian Ayn-Rand-worshiping dumbass with a platform of totally impractical ideas.
dudev 9 months ago
@dudev oh yeh upholding the constitution isn't a practical idea? you brainwashed robot moron
superfuzz 9 months ago
@superfuzz
I was referring to his idiotic libertarian views on business regulation. The Constitution allows the government to regulate commerce. So, it's Paul who wants to re-write the law. You're just a member of the Ron Paul cult. But it doesn't matter because he'll never be president.
dudev 9 months ago
@dudev The Constitution allows Congress to regulate "interstate commerce". Keyword: "interstate". The Commerce Clause is meant to allow Congress to set standards for interstate transactions to make it easier. Congress can not tell a private business owner how to run his business, what his employment requirements must be, etc.
stalrunner 9 months ago
@stalrunner

@dudev "No where in the Constitution does it say business is immune to the law."
Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that Congress is immune to the Constitution.
stalrunner 9 months ago
@dudev "And many of the pertinent laws have been ruled upon by the supreme court, the arbiter of what is constitutional and what is not."
Nothing in the Constitution says that the Supreme Court is infallible, though Article 3, Section 2 of the Constitution does say "Court shall have appellate Jurisdiction, both as to Law and Fact, with such Exceptions, and under such Regulations as the Congress shall make."
It seems Congress does have the power to place statutory limits on SCOTUS.
stalrunner 9 months ago
@stalrunner
So how exactly would this free market be implemented?
dudev 9 months ago
@dudev There's no reason why business owners should want a free market. The consumers and workforce should want a free market, and the businesses should be forced to operate within the free market or fail. With the fear of failure comes an increasing effort to be a better business. When each business uses its own creative (non-fraudulent) methods of being the best in their industry, everyone benefits. Excessive regulations and policies like TARP and other bailouts undermine that.
stalrunner 9 months ago
@stalrunner
How is this economic utopia going to come about?
dudev 9 months ago
@dudev It will happen when Congress quits listening to lobbyists, PACs, and special interest groups until after it has looked at the Constitution, specifically Article I, Section 8 (enumerated powers) and the 10th Amendment (all powers not specifically given by the Constitution to Congress or prohibited by it to the states belong to the states and to the people). Also, Congress needs to embrace more literal interpretations of the Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause.
stalrunner 9 months ago
@stalrunner
So never. Like I said, pie in the sky. Libertarianism is day dreaming.
dudev 9 months ago
@dudev I wouldn't be so pessimistic. The Tea Party may have been a load of crap in '10, but others have picked up the idea of liberty. States are starting to fight to reclaim the powers that Congress and federal agencies have taken from them. If the debt limit gets raised and Obama keeps spending at the current rate, people will wake up and start protesting the excessive borrowing and spending. If he gets involved in yet another country's domestic affairs, more people will oppose that.
stalrunner 9 months ago
@stalrunner
The conservatives are just fear-mongering about that, to the detriment of their own constituents.
dudev 9 months ago
@dudev I agree with the Court's decision. Everyone, businesses included, has the right to lobby and to donate, but it is not true that politicians must rely on businesses for donations. Ron Paul recieves more than enough money from his freedom loving supporters.
"And the US debt is not excessive compared with the GDP."
It is when you factor in expenditures.

@dudev Do you have any worries about Patriot Act abuses?
MooseOfReason 9 months ago
@MooseOfReason
His own party rejects him.
dudev 9 months ago
@dudev Well, this video was strictly about the Patriot Act and arbitrary government power, which your other comment didn't mention.
It goes along with his free market beliefs because he sees freedom as one package -- civil liberties and economic liberties. So he'll be just as determined to stop bailouts of Wall St. banks as he is here against the Patriot Act.
Yes, a lot of Republicans, unfortunately, are in favor of it. Allen West, who was just elected in November, voted against it, though.
MooseOfReason 9 months ago
@dudev You shouldn't have been called unpatriotic for that. Dissent is patriotic no matter which party is in office.
Mitch McConnell is Kentucky's other Senator, and he was helping to block some of Paul's amendments. So you're right, Republicans will talk about "individual liberty," but when given the chance to show that, for the most part they fail. Ron Paul demonstrated that at the debate when he talked about heroin. "If you have the inconsistency, then you're really not defending liberty."

ALL registered gun owners should be investigated, medical records screened for mental illness, medications etc. Cut the loopholes, require background checks for all guns sales, INCLUDING gun shows. MooseOfReason 9 months ago
MadDogOfist 9 months ago
@MadDogOfist how does the governments intrusion into someone's house to confiscate personal property not a part of the debate? How did the government know who owned gold, and why is that any of their business to begin with? Immediately after Katrina, the government went door to door to confiscate registered gun owners guns "for their protection". What were those people supposed to use to protect themselves form looters? All of that is relevant.
mnaughton11 9 months ago
@mnaughton11 FDR: The stock-piling of gold put the entire economy at risk, as they were still on the Gold Standard..
Guns: The treatment of citizens by the Bush administration during Katrina was reprehensible, focussing on 'looters' but not providing aid. However, the State of Emergency declared after Katrina removed ordinary protections. These were actions taken under a law separate to the Patriot Act when it was extant. Reference to it belongs in a different debate.
It's just grandstanding

If i was looking at the 911 emails i would say that this wired tapping would have worked. I don't see a way working within the protections that "good detective work" would have been able to protect against the action that was taken. The training of these hijackers were all taking action that would have been protected by probable cause. I might not like it but in the cases he cites i can see the defense of taking the action by government to do that things governments are charged with.

If the government "cannot use gun records to target gun owners," then why on earth is he using that as a leverage to hammer the Patriot Act?
