@MzKGeneration i agree, when a black person makes a POP song its called Urban JLS, Jason Derulo, Flo Rida, Taio Cruz, Rhianna, Black Eyed Peas anyone on David Guetta 'nothing but the beat' album, Tinchy Stryda, Chipmunk(first album) N-Dubz and all the acts on that wall makes POP music but they are in the Urban charts
on tv "urban chart" basically if youre black youre in it, like if katy perry and rihanna switched songs then it'd still be rihanna on the "urban" chart cos shes black
tinie tempah n dubz anit. as the the top comment said urban is just pure marketing bullshit ed sherran got big frm sbtv my eyes are red ting n his mixtape with ghetts etc. MJ is the king of pop ,yeah his still Our music
How the hell is Ed Sheeran not urban!!?? Look at who features on The No. 5 Collaborations Project. Devlin, Wiley, Dot Rotten, JME, Wretch 32, Random Inpulse, Sway, Ghetts, P-Money, Mikill Pane. Are they urban? Yes. Ed did songs with them and others. You Need Me, I Don't You is a rap song so yes. Ed Sheeran is urban.
Ed sheeran can't be put n a category he mixes all kinds of genres plus he's a musician I'd be surprised if anyone other than Adel can play an instrument
How did the brum girl compare MishaB to Cher Lloyd? Cher Lloyd is real in a Vanilla Ice kinda way. If Cher had MishaBs talent white people would be FULLY GASSED make no mistake, some people need to wake up man
And you can say an artists ‘soulful’ voice is defined by the instrumentals he/she sings over?. Which brings me back to my point – who can define the genre of music (and therefore its ‘urbaness’) when so much music is mixed up. But yeah… let me stop this is a deep debate lol
My point is I think Urban is a term to be used loosely at the listeners discretion and as far as the gatekeepers what to define it take no notice cause half the time you already know what music and artists you want to listen to regardless of what the radio presenter calls ‘urban’ , if didn’t know anything about artists but knew you liked rock music what would you have thought of Jay-Z at Glastonbury? Because yeah he rapped but he didn’t exactly go for his Reasonable Doubt vibe did he?
Real recognise real - when Dizzee Chipmunk Tinchy and N-Dubz started being POP everything flopped because everyone was too busy patting each others back at getting signed but not realising they all signed their souls away!
DJ Snips cracked me up.. "Fuck off ..Cher lloyds not urban .. She disgusts me I'm sorry". Any way. This urban title is bullshit and designed to blur the definition of black music so they can put remotely similar sounding music in there and sell it. There fore this discussion is valid .. Fun too . Is poet drunk btw
@rudedj Your Goddamn Right! No Joke I Hate that urban Title bullshit to many artist using R/b and hip hop beats trying to get into markets that dont reflect them!
Lemme just start off by saying that i LOVE all your debates!! You have well rounded contributors.
Firstly, what are we calling Urban? Here in the UK, it has been marketed as music by Black people. When Romeo went into the Big Brother house they called him a Urban Rapper/MC -_-
Looking at the industry, UK wise, its as if Blacks have to be whites and whites have to be blacks to do well. Eg: You think Do It Like A Dude would have been pushed it a Black British chick sang that!?
A blur can appear between pop and urban because every 21st century pop artist has been influenced in some way by 'urban' music. For example, Cher Lloyd and Rizzle Kicks rap on their records but their sound and audiences are inherently pop. Every artist in this debate ticks one or more of the invisible boxes that might class them as 'urban' but would not be the word used to describe any of these artists.
@WePlugGOODMusicTV I understand your point to an extent. But on the other hand what your saying is actually a contradiction what is Pop?, what is Folk?, what is Soul & RnB ? Legit musical genres that are not ever used in the current industry as 'bullshit marketing terms' ? I think not….... Music genres are becoming so intertwined these days it is hard to ‘officially’ draw a line between them. At what point was Elvis rock pop or soul?
Type 'Urban Culture' into wikipedia its a euphamism for (African american) culture in the US and (AfroCaribbean) culture in the UK - I had this agument the other day about the industry packaging David Guettas music as urban, i would argue the demographic the euphemism is applied to would disagree

NO Adele is NOT Urban, She's an R&B/Soul artist!
NO Ed Sheeran is NOT Urban, He's an Acoustic/Folk artist!
NO Jessie J is NOT Urban, She's a Pop artist!
NO Cher Lloyd is NOT Urban, She's a Pop artist!
If "Urban" is R&B/Hip-Hop/Soul/Reggae then Adele can be said to be "Urban" but "urban" is a simply bullshit marketing term, keep it moving!
