What I find annoying is when I see meaningful and quality music like this on youtube that only has a few thousand views and then Ill see a meaningless track from 50 Cent or Lil Wayne with over a million views..... Music is a representation of the people listening to it, I feel sorry for most people!
that's nonsense. People choose who they want. I don't know about Wayne but Kanye and Jay-Z are both lovers of listening to and making music. You only consider someone a sellout if they trade in who they are for an image or money. Jay and Kanye are just being themselves and if tomorrow 10 million people decided to buy Mos Def's next album and he became a superstar, there'd be a whole new sect of people calling him a "sellout."
thanks jeff. It's the truth. People forget that behind Kanye and Jay's music (along with others) are YEARS and YEARS of grinding. The song that first got Kanye recognized by his own admission wasn't even the song he wanted to push, and you can follow Jay's career from the hood on up since the 90s. But if you're no longer in the streets (or never was to begin with) and everyone's always crying about "keeping it real" then why persecute anyone who's being true about their OWN lives?

@jjtiojohn12 To answer your question, YES he's speaking about Sean Bell and the hundreds of thousands Sean Bell's and the millions of potential Sean Bell's. He's speaking 2 and 4 black men in this country who either don't have a platform, the heart, the intellect/awareness, or the vocabulary 2 be taken seriously. The men who've been done wrong and do wrong, "Oh Lord save our soul." A Fake Bonanza is a mirage/scheme designed 2 bring wealth, good fortune, and power to it's creator.
Fake bonanza, become real wars......bullets burn through the candy on the driver side door...long investigations and no firm lead, billion dollar flow...and black life is still cheap....

"the land mines, be disquised as welcome signs, back fresh from iraq, wild look in his eyes" analyze this
this is one of the truest songs i ever heard, every song mos def puts out has meaning and truth behind it. He pulls the wool from ppls eyes but i guess some ppl refuse to see da truth.
Agree with all your points. I personally like it because it makes me stop and think-- and that's what true hip hop is all about. This song in particular sets a mood for reflection; do we ever play into the fake bonanza? Unfortunately, sometimes we do-- we're all in check, and the least we can do is admit it and try to get ourselves back on the right track. This song helps us do so.

he said, "talk about today's mathematics: an 8th, an O, a key, and the caliber on your ratchet"
mathematics stands for the things goin on in society that are hard to understand and unfair basicallly.
its also a title of a song he did in 1999.
but an 8th, i believe, is in ref to weed.
an O, is in ref to an OUNCE of cocaine.
ratchet is a tool, so hes meaning it as a gun bcuz hes sayin "caliber"

I totally agree. I actually thought this was an excellent album for the most part with the exception of a few (very) questionable tracks but for whatever we're in the minority on this one. This track is one of the album's best hands-down.
