am not sure this is rotoscoping... i thought rotoscope was to do with "drawing over a video" thus capturing the real-life motion for ur drawing/cartoon/whatever. e.g. the ipod adverts... can someone clairfy this?
@PhantomAct I believe ou are correct, but rotoscoping is generally done on a frame-by-frame basis, so you essentially have to work with still images so I don't see why the term wouldn't apply to photographs, though modern programs allow you to keyframe the animation to make it easier... Also this and the ipod commercials are two different uses for rotoscoping, it can also be used for writing words on a video, or eliminating objects from a video
@veggiet2009 If u draw a mask on one frame to extract a cartoon-like image, then this is not even an animation. I can do that in Photoshop, draw a mask and reduce the palette from 24-bit to 8 grey levels. The inventor of rotoscope would spin in his grave if i called that rotoscope. I think rotoscope has to apply to a group of images and capturing a movement from it or adding/deleting an obj in the scene... animation is part of the definition.
@PhantomAct The way the original Rotoscope worked was you projected one frame of film so that you could trace over the images in the film strip, thereby copying the motion so that animators could then draw realistic animation, true, but the very nature of the rotoscope tool works on individual frames and does not require motion, nor does it track or capture motion. In modern usage of the term any piece of software that can duplicate this function of tracing frames of video can in fact rotoscope
@veggiet2009 One frame is not animation, so the above is just tracing. The uploader of this link even points to a Toon link which means that he was doing a cartoon extraction from a b&w jpeg. Rotoscope has a specific meaning.
Too bad Rotoshop is not available to the public. That Bob Sabiston dude who made the program is not thinking about releasing the program anytime soon.
really not that impressive. flash can do it better with the right settings and if you're willing to put this much work, might as well put in a little more and make a better looking image in photoshop
well obviously this isnt as good as it could be done, i have no experience with this particular program or technique, but i'm sure that if you wanted to make something look really nice it'd be a hell of a lot longer than youtube allows their vids to be :)
