The lyrics tell of man out on the ocean, late at night, thinking of home and of course of the woman he loves and fearful that he may not see her again, so it puzzles me that it's become a staple in the Còisir Bhàn (all-women choir) repertoire.
Looking through some geneology from my late uncle, I stumbled across the origins of this song.
'Oran Callum Sgaire' (Song of Malcolm Sgaire) was written by Callum "Sgaire" MacAulay from the Isle of Lewis. My great, great grandmother was his sister. She lived from 1814-1903. She and her 3 brothers, including Callum, emigrated to Canada.
Very pretty. I don't know this one. I've always loved Irish and old American folk songs. For some reason this shows up in a search for "He's Gone Away".
Don't we sound lovely.....especially since this was recorded at the concert after a few drams & not during the competition, when we probably sounded a bit better.
Drams or no, it sounded mighty fine to member of Clan Murray. I would never have come across your performance had I not visited an Irish version of the song Calum Sgaire by Bothy Band. Thank you for helping me travel from Ohio to Scotland.
I've always loved this song.

Still, it is lovely.
