I have 3 or4 post-Fish albums, but not this one. Listening to this song I find myself wishing again Hogarth's voice had more levels, more variation,(greater sensitivity to nuiance - whatever you might call it).
He writes some good melodies. Certainly Marillion could make better/more use of bk.gd. vox, harmonies. Maybe hire some girl singers. Or have Rick Wakeman write some full on choral parts!
I DO think Fish's singing shows more dynamics/variation. (All part of a done-to-death debate I guess)
I thought each night in Montreal just got better and better .... to hear everybody singing "happiness is the road" on Saturday, and encore after encore every night ... I don't think there's another band with this much amazing material who could pull off three evenings of almost 3 hours .... captivating
Great comment, friend. I drove all the way from Toronto for that magical weekend in MTL early April... Remember our standing ovation after the 1st song of the 1st night, sure you do. And H. and the band did remind us on the Sunday night concert on how they are most welcome here ! Cheers. Happiness is the road, indeed .
To all the Hogarth fans: marillion post '88 is a far different band than pre' 88. Fish took on an entirely opposite path which is why the split occured in the first place...MUSICAL DIFFERENCES! Had Fish remained in the band, I believe they would have broken up , since the tension within marillion in the late 80's was on the verge of meltdown. It's all hindsight, Fish could have done a solo album, then rejoined marillion for a new album. But, one can notice Fish's new direction on "Clutching..."
The "H" Marillion era creates another astonishing album. Proof upon proof that Marillion has only evolved and progressed with Hogarth at the vocal helm. Crystalline offering from the world's greatest band.
This song got me into Marillion, I received the cd when I was 13 and didn t like it at all, but by chance it survived 10 years in my room (WTF?!!??!!....), I gave it a second chance and BOUM!! I was hooked!!!
Very powerful and emotional. Whomever says this album's weak has no clue as to what they're talking about.

Love listening also to the bonus disk that comes with the remastered edition of Holidays in Eden.
Its a stronger work than many bands achieve in their official releases.
