I captain a quahog dragger outta Jonesport Maine been fishing for 20yrs n if it wasnt for him keeping his cool n riding it out that couldve turned ugly.there was a small degree of luck but hel did it xactly right.
90% skill and experience, 10% luck, without a working brain and hands for split second reaction, the boat would have capsize....im a skipper myself and experienced a near capsized before....
Not really, The boat had out riggers and a mast. The mast stablizes the boat in these dangers. Then because it had out riggers which also help to stabalize the vessel
@Lorenzo12081 na bro its not the mast that keeps it up right they have a keel in the hull if not its the center of gravity like say they engine at the bottom of the hull but its most likely a keel
No way that's in florida, it's a west coast boat and that's the pacific ocean. In terms of luck? pretty neutral i think. it was a bad spot and a good boat. By the way, There would have been no steering it once it was surfing that wave, so it's survival is more a testament to the skills of the designer and builder than the captain, though he certainly seems to have kept it together.

yeh it was so skillful that the skipper bought the boat upright, where can i learn to right a boat like that?if it took on much more water theyd be in trouble skill or not, thats why its called an accident, because it wasnt meant to happen!

I fish from oregon and that was a nasty bar you should fish out of the buoy 10 and cross that bar the worst i have ever seen astoria oregon fish smart
whoever edited this video is wrong about this being in Florida. this is at noyo harbor california look it up on google earth you will see the relations are with the jetti and channel is in this video. its a comercial salmon and crab boat
Why is it always amazing that a boat rights itself? They're supposed to do that. If boats were designed to just be pushed over, there would not be a fishing industry.
All boats have a limit to their self-righting ability.
Strangely enough it's called their self-righting angle.
Once this degree of roll is surpassed then the boat will capsize. The self righting angle is determined by the distribution of weight above and below the water line plus the relevant center of gravity for that particular vessel.
By simply taking on a few tons of water onto the deck or into the wheelhouse or the area below decks the self-righting angle can change dramatically.
Crazy, so scary. A fear of every fisherman, especially in the winter. Returning with boat load and getting on a run from a stern approaching sea. Rolling her on her side and stalling the motor. Left adrift with no power. Scary !
this boat's navigator was extremely skilled in order to keep this boat in it's correct field of navigation. Those of us who own boats and PROPERLY navigate them know the difference. This was NOT LUCK, it was definitely skill and the crew was extremely prepared so I do not agree with fishkiller's comment. I wouldn't feel safe with someone who had comments like that......it's people like that who can't see the truth that are dangerous...
@fishin1111 This doesnt really make sense. The navigator didnt keep them safe. The skipper did. Field of navigation? That isnt even a term. Navigators are responsible for knowing where they vessel is, has been, and is going to go. They are not necessarily the skipper. If anything, its the navigator's fault for leading the boat into BREAKING SURF. If the skipper didnt realize it was happening either, then thats one incredibly incompetent crew.
@fishin1111 Skilled my ar$e. From the moment that wave hit, the skipper was not able to control his boat. The rudder on a boat is useless when the boat is laying on it's side being pushed around by thousands of tons of water. It was pure luck that saw this boat make it home in one piece. It was pure luck that the waves didn't smash this boat to pieces on those rocks. All the SKILL in the world can not match the fury of the ocean. I'm just glad they made it home alive.
@AussieMusicRocks you are probably right! I think only God can save your ass when you mess with something as furious as the ocean, especially when you put yourself in those situations, however, a good Captain certainly doesn't hurt matters in moments such as this one. It's certainly not a "stunt" I would have engaged in. These are the situations when you have to bury your head in between your legs and hope that you don't have to kiss your own "ARSE" goodbye. to each his own.
@AussieMusicRocks Whether or not it was luck, there was still a skilled crew upon this vessel when this occurred. Someone who didn't know their heads from their "arses" would have been looking at the sand below then as they struggled to find air to breath. I still believe the Captain did a good job on this vessel.Personally,I wouldn't be brave enough to do this is or to put myself or crew in such a compromising position, but perhaps this Capt.had already done this a million times and expected it
@jacobg1777 hmmm..........a person who has never handled a boat or been a Captain before on a vessel of this capacity MAKING IT across this violent Mother Nature display of affection would be LUCK. Nothing in between could change the fact that this skipper was skilled.
That boat is crossing the bar at Fort Bragg, California. The video is from a tape that I loaned out years ago and it was not returned. My friend took the video from the North Jetty.

They should have tried to reverse it for 5 or 6 seconds as the wave came upon their stern. It would have passed them by.
