Amazing is how the footage in this trailer is edited to make it look like a very dark suburban type of film. They even had the Twilight Zone theme playing. I wouldve like to have the scene the version they show here. Reading about the making of this film, it just seems there was an all around disagreement over just what type of movie they were making. Thoughts?
one of my favorite midnight movies, the film has a mysterious dark tone, never once seems to climax and ends on such a happy note. it is such a shame how this one really fell into obscurity, it doesnt even have a cult following
Near the end of the movie a character by the name of Chief Thundersky appears driving a Jeep. I think this character was the inspiration for John Redcorn on 'King of the Hill'. I've looked online, but can find no confirmation of this. Any thoughts?
When I saw this in a theatre I remember thinking 'they're playing against type.' Belushi you would have expected to play the irritating neighbor, and Ackroyd the straight-laced guy. It was an interesting idea.
Haven't seen it yet( only 19). I heard the punk band 'Fear' were suppose to do the music for this film because John wanted them too but it ended up not working out, that woulda been cool though...
I think it would've been funny if Earl was watching Animal House and when he saw Bluto acting like a pig next to the Omegas he would've agreed with them. A talented man, John was.
A very weird but very good and underrated dark cult comedy classic. John Belushi gave a great final performance and Dan Aykroyd was freaking creepy looking with those weird blue contact lenses he wore all throughout the film and that scene where he jumps out at John from behind the shower curtain all covered in swamp mud scared the shit out of me when i saw it on t.v. as a kid. Cathy Moriarty was smokin hot in it though and Dan's line "Now just put the coffee powder back in the cup." is classic.
I remember seeing this in 81 and i was about 13 and this movie and the blues brothers, were the first movies that i actually laughed way out loud at.. i could'nt stop and almost peed myself,,,thats when i knew how funny belushi and ackroyd were!! Plus they were on snl at the time too, so im lucky to get to see them when i did!!
This movie would come on HBO back in 85-86 all the time, thats when HBO played about 5 movies a day in rotation. My brother and I would watch it over and over and over. Loved this movie and Modern Problems, The Pirate Movie, Airplane :) funny stuff
Continental Divide was his last movie. John was suppose to play Dan Akroyds part. He was out of it and switched to the straight guy Would have been a better film I think. Akroyd was better suited for for the part of the semi sane neighbor Still a good film though
I never get bored watching this film, not least because of Cathy Moriarty (man she lights my fire), but apart from Kathryn Walker's weak offering, each individual performance pushes the film up to memorable comedy, rather than the average comedy it would've been in less capable hands.
How can you not like Aykroyd's Popeye The Sailor, Moriarty's Marilyn Monroe (or is it Mae West?) or Tim Kazurinsky's moth-eaten fleaball?
belushi at his best,i say. everyone i know says " neighbors, whats that?. oh, its a john belushi film? well ive seen animal house and that was funny." it's frustrating when people associate an actor with only one movie when thev'e played so many other roles that are good.
I asked ackroyd about this film a couple of years ago at an SNL party and he was lukewarm on it -- which disappointed me, I think it's genius -- many levels up from the family values comedies of today. The ending is perfect, and 'get that thing away from that thing' is one of the best lines of all-time
It's excellent! Why so many did not like it I don't know? Saw it with my parents and they HATED IT??????????? I loved it I was 14. Laughed my ass off. Fav. scene
BELUISHI: Good is it? Well.. Must call Ceasers and complement the chief. Tell me were they busy at this hour?!?!?
movie was hystrerical, people didnt get it.first and only time that Belushi Played the straight man to ackroyds goof.Brilliant.was not belushis last film.I believe it was "continental divide'?
No it wasn't. Continental Divide was released on September 18, 1981 and Neighbours was released on December 18 in the same year as Continental Divide was. So, Neighbours was has last film. Did you know that this film was directed by John G. Avildsen, director of the Academy Award winning Rocky?
I'm amazed at all the people saying they loved this movie. Maybe I need to watch it again. I saw it when it first came out and the whole theater walked out at the end thinking WTF?! I'm not kidding. I was with a large group of people and we were all saying, "What was THAT?" This was not at all what people expected from Belush/Ackroyd. At the time I thought it might be the worst film I had ever seen- no laughs at all.
I remember seeing this trailer on TV when the movie came out and was disapointed it didnt have the Twilight Zone sone in it the movie. A few months later Belushi was dead
I remember my dad left me alone in the theater to pick up my sister from school when seeing this and I was so scared lol. It brings back some fond memories.
It's been several years since I last watched this film. I remember watching this film a lot when I first discovered I owned the VHS... surprised to find it in my collection back a few years ago.
One of my favorite movies. I first saw it on t.v. in like 1985(I was 13) and thought it was great. After that I rented it and taped it. Great movie. Very funny. Very WEIRD.
One of the best dark comedies ever made! What a classic! After Hours is another fantastic dark comedy. Thanks for this! I had the movie on vhs and loaned it out. Never got it back!
Thus, exploring the problem of the one and the many turns out to be a way to reconstruct Aristotle's arguments in the Metaphysics. . These latter are, for the most part, supported by showing that they resolve otherwise insoluble problems. Moreover, having Aristotle's arguments resolve the apparent contradiction in Aristotle's account of primary ousia, this very thorough treatment of the text succeeds in making it surprisingly intelligible.

Not his last Film that was Continental Divide and this movie had many memorable lines.

@edchuckndoug That depends on the production dates for both films, but "Neighbors" was released theatrically three months after "Continental Divide."
