Israel does not fit well in the Middle East. Its like a puzzle piece that just wouldn't fit no matter how much you hammer it in with the military. They can continue being a Spartan like state or they can try to make some friends. If Israel wants Syria to not support Hamas, Hezbollah and break of its alliance with Iran then they should return the entire Golan Heights. If they need water they should cut back amount of Jews that they invite to come to live in Israel and build desalinization plants.

This is what a peace deal will look like.

Israel will control the water, Syria will control the land. Much of Golan will be turned into a national park which Israelis can access with no official papers as well as Syrians. It will be a de-militarised zone well into the Syrian border.

Its not a matter of if this deal will go ahead but when.

If Syria wants peace with Israel it should drop their demand for the return of the Golan Heights on the same basis that they have dropt their demand for the return of the Alexandretta/Hatay province from Turkey.

Recently Syria deleted the Alexandretta/Hatay province from all of their maps in return for a trade agreement.
