Also the entire structure was not destroyed nor was it demolished.
I didn't say that you could go on vacation in its current status at that time but they also didn't destroy enough of it that it couldn't be repaired and that it had to be demolished and rebuilt from scratch. The point being is that US soldiers value their fellow soldiers life more then a building.

Its there strategy that they can bring in tank and blast the windows to prevent him from changing position after enough windows have blown up. Them attacking the windows and having to wait to see the muzzle flash to know where he was shooting from would have comprimised their location. There is no such thing as proportion of force in war.
Let me rephrase it, the sniper developed a counter to the marines strategy by moving from window to window, the marines developed a counter to the snipers strategy by blasting the window he had just fired from with tanks to prevent him from using that same window again which meant that sooner or later he would run out of windows to go to fire from. That is not out of proportion. If your going to complain that its is unfair of them to use tanks then its unfair for the sniper to move.
Again there is no such thing as proportion of force in war. When the navies of the allies and the axis bombarded troops with their naval guns was that out of proportion? I mean come on smg's and assault rifles vs. a 26mm canon with a ranges of several miles? Did anyone complain that was unfair? no.

it does make sense to use tanks, its a less casualty rate for your troops cause think of how many troops couldv'e been killed trying to storm that building.

ah ya because it was a tatic to stop the sniper from moving from window to window and to eventually either force the sniper to shoot from only one window or to give up and considering the whole goal was to save the soldiers lives and considering human life is more important then structures its makes perfect sense that an american soldier would save a fellow soldier then a hotel building that is vacant. Also the entire structure was not destroyed nor was it demolished.

I didn't say that you could go on vacation in its current status at that time but they also didn't destroy enough of it that it couldn't be repaired and that it had to be demolished and rebuilt from scratch. The point being is that US soldiers value their fellow soldiers life more then a building.

No I know what your argument was and that its unfair to take a sniper out with a tank especially when he allowed the marines to move their dead comrade out. My point was thats not how war ever works, and my other point was that its unfair of a sniper to move from window to window and never present a target for the marines on the ground to shoot at. Get over it, the tank was called in to take window after window out so that eventually he wouldn't have anymore windows to move too.

Its there strategy that they can bring in tank and blast the windows to prevent him from changing position after enough windows have blown up. Them attacking the windows and having to wait to see the muzzle flash to know where he was shooting from would have comprimised their location. There is no such thing as proportion of force in war.

Let me rephrase it, the sniper developed a counter to the marines strategy by moving from window to window, the marines developed a counter to the snipers strategy by blasting the window he had just fired from with tanks to prevent him from using that same window again which meant that sooner or later he would run out of windows to go to fire from. That is not out of proportion. If your going to complain that its is unfair of them to use tanks then its unfair for the sniper to move.

I can remember my drill instructor telling us back in the summer of '01 "when it comes to fighting, if you ain't cheating you won't win." we are not expected to HAVE to take a blow,example, if someone comes at me with a knife, they will get a bullet in their chest, I'm not going one on one and taking the chance of getting sliced.

that was my platoon of tanks that destroyed the hotel. and if insurgents are willing to behead innocent american civilians in iraq, I doubt they are willing to allow us to remove our wounded. Otherwise, recovering the downed helo would have been a cake walk.

thats not fair, i mean you accept that the sniper had respect for the dead in the battle and allows marines to take him off the battle field, but do marnies have any sort of respect for the rules of the battle. the sniper is one against many and marnies use tanks to pin him down, there has to be proprotionality, using a tank agianst some one who has just got a sniper rifle, that is against to spirit of the battle, to say the least.

When i say we, i mean American soldiers, is it wrong in this day and age to have a sort of patriotism? I like to think of myself as an American and the soldiers of this country as a tool of all Americans. Hence, we; despite that fact that I was not there.
So, applying your logic, the smart/brave thing to do was to stand up and find which room he was in, then open fire at him/her rather than duck for cover to reduce the highest casualty rates. Either way, a confirmed kill wasn't assured

What is fair? The guy was using a sniper rifle against marines hundreds of yards away, he had the advantage over the marines by having the high ground, not to mention the fact that he had a sniper rifle vs. a m16. He moved from window to window, the marines stayed put.
