I would further argue that Christianity has basis on particulars, our own particular souls, our own sins and responsibilities, our own relationship with Jesus Christ, independent of our standing with the earthly church. That is the message protestant reformers pushed through.
See I have a problem with this. It is the ability to focus on particulars, to individually be able to isolate variables, that allows us to solve equations, to solve the problems of science. Modern science rests on this, and it would not be possible without it. To disrepute this is to disrepute all of the accomplishments that have transfomed our society from a peasant medieval society with lifespans in the 30s to an affluent one with lifespans in the 70s.
It is obvious that the two thousand year journey of Christianity has taken it through many twists and turns as the failings of the human factor constructed dangerous curves and detours that led to anarchy and apathy. The preservation of its purity, however, speaks not only to its resilience, but to the fulfillment of Jesus' declaration "On this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."
Jesus told us that He's the truth, the way, & the life, & no one will get to the Father but by Him. He's the Word of God in the flesh, so the Bible's the absolute truth! =) Doctrine isn't flexible to culteral relevance, it stands as a solid rock, immovable in the tempest tossed sea of cultural decay and sin. Todays pastors say, "no one has all doctrine right except Jesus", spoken like lazy shepherds! That's what the Bible is for, sound doctrine, Jesus takes it very seriously,so should they.
"the early Church believed that only the Bible was the final authority". But didn't Christ's teachings as well as those of the Apostles, especially Paul, go beyond the 'Bible, i.e.the written Letter, or at least the understood interpretation of that day? Had they held to the teaching of the Septuagint alone would they not have succumbed, as the Galatians nearly did, to the Judaizers?
God Spoke through the Moses and the prophets before He came in the flesh as our Savior, Jesus Christ. When Christ came in the flesh, He Taught His Apostles. The Apostles recorded or oversaw the recording of this Good News that we have come to know as the Gospel. Since Jesus is Lord, the Gospel is no less the Word of God than the Old Testament recording of the Law. Acts 1:8

I like the part of Aquinas - the definition of particulars - good stuff. Thanks for posting.
