Great video and great views on parkour and conditioning. On the training undercover topic, i think more tracuers need to train in different weather conditions. Parkour is a great way to help overcome any situation but you have to put yourself in those situations to be able to over come them. What happens when you need to do an arm jump when the bars are covered in water or a precision with a possibly slick landing? If you've never been in that situation you wouldn't know 100% you could make it
Thanks for making all this videos becuse in the beginning i sucked but when i saw your videos i learned how to train good and i got much better thanks :D
"A fundamental misunderstanding about parkour is that it is dangerous. When a muggle watches parkour he thinks "if I tried that I would permenantly damage my body." By contrast, a traceur says with confidence "I can" or "I can not yet do that" because, I believe a traceur is someone who is in the ongoing process of feeling out exactally what he can and can not do. Life is much safer when one has this knowledge.
what are the best shoes to use? is there a certain grip pattern or something because often i slip on certain walls i try to go up. or is it just training my feet to use certain angles on the wall for increased grip
@TrevorFormosa Shoes are just there to cover your feet really. The technique is the most important aspect. This is something you just have to develop over time.
@Obsidian1138 I agree with you, but the shoes aspect comes in not slipping over different materials.. for example if you Kong in a high speed, to a precision landing on something small [like a high block or something], is it the shoe or the landing technique that prevents you from slipping? [regardless wet objects] for example i have shoes that stick like glue to concrete, but feels like on ice on painted floor... any suggestions?
@TheFRunnerRC Scaffolding is quite expensive, but you could try contacting a scaffold company and ask if they've got any old stuff which might be for sale.
I'd heard of parkour a little from friends that just liked to run up walls and such. But only seriously decided to get in to it when i was taking a detour to my car but came across a fence that was only about 7 feet tall but still to tall for me to just get up over it. So i ended up having to walk a mile around back to the car (not a bad walk but still). So I've decide to try it the only problem is i live in the country...
I've been training for about six months now, I know the moves, I know the mindset, but this really opens my eyes to what I have been missing. Now I just need to move to a city haha.
I Have decided to become a probationer of parkour Can you give me any good workouts to do to prepare my body? Also I know it is good to have the right kind of shoes to get good traction can you recomend any?
@STORMWHITEpro the best part of parkour is finding your own. If I or anyone else was to tell you what to do or how to do it, you'd lose half of the enjoyment that comes from doing parkour. What you need to do is to go out, look for obstacles and do what you think "might" be possible. Those are the exercises you'll gain the most from. As for shoes, volley ball shoes work very well, but athletic shoes in general work.
@obsidian1138 oh and i know how you guys land on the front "ball" of your foot when jumping off from stuff rite? is it easy to break ur toes like that? or is it safer? :D
@theveritas100 We wouldn't land on the balls of our feet if it wasn't the best way to land. You definitely don't want to land flat footed or on your heels, as this will definitely lead to injury. For most jumps, landing on the balls of your feet is best. I've never heard of anyone breaking their toes by landing this way.
@obsidian1138 yes i've heard that u said it is very rare to have serious injuries like bone breaking and stuff but is it higher for beginners? i love ur videos its very gud.
This short film is amazing. I'm glad you made it. I just people really understand the deep message that you are giving. It's so true and something people need to realize.
Do you guys ever get in any trouble for jumping and climbing all over these buildings? I would love to start training for parkour, but one of my biggest concerns is that I live in LA where not everyone is exactly... friendly, so I am afraid that when most people would see me jumping around, they would rather call the cops than take a risk and ask me themselves if they didn't want me there.
@TheGuyInUrCloset The UK is a bit different in that respect from the US, but yes, sometimes if you start training in a new place people get offended. If that happens here you just apologise and go train somewhere else, and eventually you find places to train where nobody minds. There's no issue with the police because to a policeman it's obvious we have no ill intent. It's possible practitioners with a less mature attitude have a different experience though.
@Feraess The one thing I keep wondering is about the police, because being a teenager (16) the police dont always have the best image of us, but at the same time, they might let us slide because we are younger.... not sure, but I definitely dont want to get arrested for exercising and having good clean fun. And of course if someone were to ask me to leave, i would do so immediately and apologize but I'm just afraid there are to many that would think I would react differently.
@deaducr any age is good to start, remember the key to success is practice and dedication, if you really want to be good at something you will have a goal set and go for it regardless of what everyone else says, just remember to be safe and dont try to do anything you know your not ready for

First off what you guys are doing are brilliant and truly inspirational in the fact it has open my eyes to view life differently... I'm just curious to know two things: first at what age did you start training for pakour (I know age doesn't matter, but I am just curious); and I know you probably get asked this a lot but what is a general workout I should do to do pakour??
I'm Dave, and I started at 21. Paul started at 25. The best exercise is trying to move past obstacles. Start with easy obstacles (like flat ground) and then find gradually harder obstacles. Parkour is a training system itself, you don't need to train for it. Just start at the start and take small steps forwards.
I've always liked parkour. But recently my ankle has been broken and hasn't been healing correctly. Finally I had some doctors do some stuff with it, and went to physical therapy for weeks, and now, I can run. So finally I can learn parkour.
I saw a kid doing parkour at the park, i thought it was incredable, so i went over and talked to him, he told me to go to this vid, wen i saw him i wanted to know, wen i saw the vid it comfirmed that i wanted to learn.... parkour rox!

@OxiC3x0 Parkour training itself IS the fitness training! For ideas for extra conditioning exercises though, I'd recommend our video, 'Strength training and conditioning for Parkour 2'. ;)
@Kruemelmonster1004 I was 32 yesterday. Yes, I do have a job. I'm a sound engineer. We train on tuesday & thursday evenings from 6pm, and all day saturday from 10:30am.
whoa your really great. i think ur one of those people who understand this the most. you made me start practicing, this is like so much more than a sport :O
Ok so i've played football (American football) for 12 years (since I was 6), and that's all i've been trained for my whole life. I've been doing weight training for so long that i've gone from 220 to 270 (and no, I am not fat haha). I've noticed that people that do Parkour are generally small and athletic, not big and strong. What kind of things should I do to balance this out?
@HigleyFootballRulz The general rule of exercise is to practise the things you want to get better at. If you want your abilities to become more balanced, simply use a wider range of exercise. If you want to become better at something specific (like moving through your environment) then practise precisely that.
@HigleyFootballRulz I'd suggest some good cardio exercises. This can be something as simple as running, but you could also try variations on this, such as fartlek training. Google this for a full description ;)
@HigleyFootballRulz adapt parkour is an art so tailor it to your specifications use your size as an aid instead of a handicap incorporate your strength in your movements, everyone does parkour differently its like a fingerprint , everyone has their own style, conformity to someone else's way is defeating the purpose, practicing parkour is overcoming obstacles and im sure you can overcome your own =)
@Obsidian1138 i totally agree, i get funny looks from others when they see me training in Converse all-stars. but they're light, comfy and as close to barefoot as i can get for the price. + they wear well and grip like mad :D
@July603 i have found that wrestling shoes are really good, because they are tight, super lightweight, and have excellent traction. and you can get a good pair for about 30$
@July603 i have found that wrestling shoes are really good, because they are tight, super lightweight, and have excellent traction. and you can get a good pair for about 30$
hey guys i also am a practitioner, though i live in bury, there are extremely limited places to train, where may i ask are the spot in this video in manchester???
is it recommended to learn and preform parkour in groups. because everyone i know thinks parkour is a waste of time. and it wont lead to anything but i have told them its very important and can help u reach your maximum potential at a lot of things. they still dont believe me so i was wondering . plz reply if u get a chance
@supernova464252 It does help to have people to practise Parkour with in person, because then you can share ideas and challenge each other more easily. However, if you don't have anyone then you can still get ideas and info from the internet. It takes a little bit longer to achieve things, perhaps, but learning on your own often means you come to understand it better.
@Killzslayz You dont have to do a crazy big jump or whatever you see in commercials or tv, remember that we are the one who choose our own path, just start with the small things, get your skills good and everything is going to be alright.
Hello! Thanks for posting this up. It's realy nice to hear the philosophy behind what you do. I agree with a lot of what you're saying about society's conditioning. I have a few objections however which I'd like to raise with you;
Firstly there is a great deal of your thinking which is to do with personal acheivement, improvement and the focusing on one's self to the point of disregarding external influence.
This troubles me because society is not intrinsically evil and we need to consider others in order to preserve it (or to make it worth preserving). 14 seconds into this video a man looks quite startled and runs out of the way of the three guys in white hoodies.
This is a microcosm of the problem I see. Yes it is good to know yourself, your goals and to allow yourself to focus on improvement, your path etc. But it is worth mentioning the ying to this yang as it were, and to say that the pursuit of personal acheivement above all else is ultimately a self serving and I would say selfish pursuit.
@bobbypoo247 parkour isn't just about self discipline (and similar mantras). One of it's key points is also considering/respecting others around you and your environment, not becoming angry or annoyed for no reason (for example). As mentioned in part 1, it's only 40 minutes long, and every single aspect of parkour cannot even being to be touched upon within a single video (or possibly in ANY video). And.. the guy was probably startled because he wasn't watching where he was going ;)
@bobbypoo247 I think we made it clear in the documentary that Parkour is about personal improvement rather than personal achievement. Sure, Parkour is a personal discipline, but you need to have a strong foundation yourself if you want to help others. Modern society certainly isn't 'intrinsically evil', but it does have a tendency to encourage you to forget that we can exist and operate independently. That, in my experience, is a significant flaw.
u guys know what ur talking about and ur awesome . i used to live in manchester but i live in wales now. im only 11 years old ill ask my dad if i can come down on the traun to meet u. what days and times r u down there . add me as a friend . p.s im crap at parkour and i just want to learn from experienced people
its all good but isnt training in the rain a good thing because you get used to every thing being wet an slippery and you learn to control it,,, so when it dries up you will find it much easier because you are used to training in rain if you no wat i mean :) peace
any shoes are good my freind running shoes are just as good i use nike darts often now there great for training as long as you can feel your landing and have good grip you should be fine
the k-swiss ariakes are supposedly really good but i heard the soles thin out quickly. i, personally use inov-8 f-lite 305 pk with goretex. try one of the inov-8 f-lite pk shoes. you can also try vibram fivefingers however those are mainly for barefoot training and i wouldn't recommend you using them for hard training if you are not used to training or running barefoot.
Feiyue is a great shoe. Light weight, very thin sole, decent durability, and only $15 USD on Amazon. Sizes are in EU so use a chart if you're in the US.
Yeah that's what I've heard, but there should be still some about for a few weeks until all the stock runs out - I've looked online and they're still for sale but they should run out soon I guess.. :)
Im From Manchester And I Already Have A Small Group Of People Who Enjoy Parkour Regularly So If Youu Want To Meet Up And Train Then I Would Be More Than Happy To Do So... P.S The Parkour Team Shown In The Video Train Near The MOSI In Manchester Quite Regularly Cmbs
wow the 4 of these videos gave me a whole new understanding of parkour. I just resently started a parkour group with a bunch of guys and im gonna make all of them watch these.
idk man i've been practising 3 months and i don't feel any progress..is it because there's no good spots in my twon or what? because the picnic tables in the park became too easy to me and boring. ugh idk i think it's just bad luck to live in a city without any good places for parkour
then move to the natural environment, it is a lot of fun too. Me ang some other guyz run a 10-12k throgh the parks and forests every few weeks and we get some major excersised done.
I've been a member of Northern Parkour for a while now, and although I don't really post a lot, I do read a lot. I practice a lot, mostly with my friends who are also very dedicated, however I have as of recently felt that we have strayed from the true meaning of parkour. This video has really helped set me back on track, and most important of all view the world the way a traceur should, and invite challenge back into my mind. I truly thank you.
if you don't mind me asking, how old are you now? And how intense did you train? an hour everyday, couple of hours a week? I saw your other video where you had the no excuses training, i like the idea of that
i believe many of us traceurs think, or at least should think in those terms...
however, i'm a little sad, regarding that as the doc progresses (from part one to part four) less people as having the curiosity to watch it (number of views decreases considerably) =/
anyway,
peace and good trains from Brazil
check out my latest vids in my account (Sapo Pensando Livre 1 e 2) if you will
weather shouldn't stop you, it's almost like being in a completly diffrent inviroment. should adapt to it, u get diffrent responses when u land or grab something.
6:09-7:54 you're not alloud to film there, terrorism prevention. I've been training there with my mates from holland after the trace gathering. the security wouldt let us film. stupid, isnt it?
Whoever wrote the narrative (of the entire short) is a genius and I am so appreciative of the philosophy expressed. If I had one person in the world to meet it would be that person, the narrative is actually that impactful. Thank you.
Update: There is now a downloadable version of all 4 parts of the video. Just check the video descriptions for the links. You can also find a link to a downoad of the whole thing in the part 1 description :)
@Obsidian1138 Hey man, i want to start parkour but i'm like 5'4. I'm a pretty fit guy but I'm not sure if I'm tall enough to make those wall runs and jumps on the videos. And there aren't many places I can go around my area (canada). What should I do and does learning parkour cost money?
@Tomlowlife Don't let your height stop you. Sebastien Foucan is only about 5'5, and look at some of the stuff he's done! Fine a local group who practice near you (there's bound to be one). Learning parkour shouldn't cost anything, if you're training outside ;)
ive had that re the group. but i think that if you train on the solo you get better as, like dave said, its you and no one else who is doing it. respect your limits and be friends with them. you know thats why i fuckin love you guys. i HATE these NEW people because they do all these flips and naff tricks. with their EGO's and then they get heard. see train safe not sorry. u waan get up my end. few good spots!!!
Thanks Tim. I knew this would tie in with your outlook on parkour :) Let me know when you're next training at the flats and I'll make a point of heading over in that direction for some more of that brutal conditioning!!
lol im very honoured that you thought that. NO probs at all will text you next time im down there. thats all been working on really for a while. hey the climb ups ARE getting there. slowly but they are. you well bro?
These videos are informative and inspirational.
They inspire me at least.
Only an hour ago I felt like I needed guidance to attempt this, but now I am ready to start from the bottom and work my way up.

@HigleyFootballRulz The general rule of exercise is to practise the things you want to get better at. If you want your abilities to become more balanced, simply use a wider range of exercise. If you want to become better at something specific (like moving through your environment) then practise precisely that.
Feraess 1 year ago
@HigleyFootballRulz I'd suggest some good cardio exercises. This can be something as simple as running, but you could also try variations on this, such as fartlek training. Google this for a full description ;)
Obsidian1138 1 year ago
@HigleyFootballRulz adapt parkour is an art so tailor it to your specifications use your size as an aid instead of a handicap incorporate your strength in your movements, everyone does parkour differently its like a fingerprint , everyone has their own style, conformity to someone else's way is defeating the purpose, practicing parkour is overcoming obstacles and im sure you can overcome your own =)

Hey , I'm kinda starting in parkour hen i found a dilema , which are the best shoes for doing parkour ?!?!?
Got 120 bucks to buy some and I was considering the Reezig .
Help !
By the way , nice Vids. guys !
July603 1 year ago
@July603 I wouldn't worry too much about the shoes. Just choose something which is comfortable, flexible and light. I'd look at running shoes.
Obsidian1138 1 year ago
@Obsidian1138 i totally agree, i get funny looks from others when they see me training in Converse all-stars. but they're light, comfy and as close to barefoot as i can get for the price. + they wear well and grip like mad :D

is it recommended to learn and preform parkour in groups. because everyone i know thinks parkour is a waste of time. and it wont lead to anything but i have told them its very important and can help u reach your maximum potential at a lot of things. they still dont believe me so i was wondering . plz reply if u get a chance
supernova464252 1 year ago
@supernova464252 It does help to have people to practise Parkour with in person, because then you can share ideas and challenge each other more easily. However, if you don't have anyone then you can still get ideas and info from the internet. It takes a little bit longer to achieve things, perhaps, but learning on your own often means you come to understand it better.
I've done most of my training on my own.

im only 14 right now
but im too scared to try parkour :'(
Killzslayz 1 year ago
@Killzslayz You dont have to do a crazy big jump or whatever you see in commercials or tv, remember that we are the one who choose our own path, just start with the small things, get your skills good and everything is going to be alright.
Khriz1007 1 year ago
Hello! Thanks for posting this up. It's realy nice to hear the philosophy behind what you do. I agree with a lot of what you're saying about society's conditioning. I have a few objections however which I'd like to raise with you;
Firstly there is a great deal of your thinking which is to do with personal acheivement, improvement and the focusing on one's self to the point of disregarding external influence.
bobbypoo247 2 years ago
This troubles me because society is not intrinsically evil and we need to consider others in order to preserve it (or to make it worth preserving). 14 seconds into this video a man looks quite startled and runs out of the way of the three guys in white hoodies.
bobbypoo247 2 years ago
This is a microcosm of the problem I see. Yes it is good to know yourself, your goals and to allow yourself to focus on improvement, your path etc. But it is worth mentioning the ying to this yang as it were, and to say that the pursuit of personal acheivement above all else is ultimately a self serving and I would say selfish pursuit.
bobbypoo247 2 years ago
@bobbypoo247 parkour isn't just about self discipline (and similar mantras). One of it's key points is also considering/respecting others around you and your environment, not becoming angry or annoyed for no reason (for example). As mentioned in part 1, it's only 40 minutes long, and every single aspect of parkour cannot even being to be touched upon within a single video (or possibly in ANY video). And.. the guy was probably startled because he wasn't watching where he was going ;)
jsmithtraceur 2 years ago
@bobbypoo247 I think we made it clear in the documentary that Parkour is about personal improvement rather than personal achievement. Sure, Parkour is a personal discipline, but you need to have a strong foundation yourself if you want to help others. Modern society certainly isn't 'intrinsically evil', but it does have a tendency to encourage you to forget that we can exist and operate independently. That, in my experience, is a significant flaw.

its all good but isnt training in the rain a good thing because you get used to every thing being wet an slippery and you learn to control it,,, so when it dries up you will find it much easier because you are used to training in rain if you no wat i mean :) peace

What shoes do you guys wear?
because i really want to know what shoes are good for parkour!
i got K-Swiss, is that good or do you need running shoes?
Plz reply!
Jappa1995 2 years ago
the k-swiss ariakes are supposedly really good but i heard the soles thin out quickly. i, personally use inov-8 f-lite 305 pk with goretex. try one of the inov-8 f-lite pk shoes. you can also try vibram fivefingers however those are mainly for barefoot training and i wouldn't recommend you using them for hard training if you are not used to training or running barefoot.
spear224 2 years ago
Feiyue is a great shoe. Light weight, very thin sole, decent durability, and only $15 USD on Amazon. Sizes are in EU so use a chart if you're in the US.
coverton341 2 years ago
k-swiss are some of the best training shoes out
Retrobian 2 years ago
I wear Asics they're really good. K-Swiss are also good.
So basically every jogging shoe, running shoe, is good for parkour. With a good grip that is.

I go out with these - Nike Dart VI is the most common shoe that is used.

I use the Nike Dart VII

Ahh, the VI has now been discontinued apparently so VII are the way forward until the Sucess returns
Adammarr111 2 years ago
I didn't know they got discontinued, i guess that's why i couldn't find them at a store, lol.
ranger149 2 years ago
Yeah that's what I've heard, but there should be still some about for a few weeks until all the stock runs out - I've looked online and they're still for sale but they should run out soon I guess.. :)

Obsidian1138 2 years ago 31
hmmmm cool
idk man i've been practising 3 months and i don't feel any progress..is it because there's no good spots in my twon or what? because the picnic tables in the park became too easy to me and boring. ugh idk i think it's just bad luck to live in a city without any good places for parkour
nunchakueagle 2 years ago
then move to the natural environment, it is a lot of fun too.

CyborgNinja442 2 years ago
if you don't mind me asking, how old are you now? And how intense did you train? an hour everyday, couple of hours a week? I saw your other video where you had the no excuses training, i like the idea of that

beautiful
great idea to show up your thoughts
i believe many of us traceurs think, or at least should think in those terms...
however, i'm a little sad, regarding that as the doc progresses (from part one to part four) less people as having the curiosity to watch it (number of views decreases considerably) =/
anyway,
peace and good trains from Brazil

6:09-7:54 you're not alloud to film there, terrorism prevention. I've been training there with my mates from holland after the trace gathering. the security wouldt let us film. stupid, isnt it?

Whoever wrote the narrative (of the entire short) is a genius and I am so appreciative of the philosophy expressed. If I had one person in the world to meet it would be that person, the narrative is actually that impactful. Thank you.

Tomlowlife 1 year ago
@Tomlowlife Don't let your height stop you. Sebastien Foucan is only about 5'5, and look at some of the stuff he's done! Fine a local group who practice near you (there's bound to be one). Learning parkour shouldn't cost anything, if you're training outside ;)

Great explanation and examination of the philosophy of parkour!
xatomicxclockx 3 years ago
ive had that re the group. but i think that if you train on the solo you get better as, like dave said, its you and no one else who is doing it. respect your limits and be friends with them. you know thats why i fuckin love you guys. i HATE these NEW people because they do all these flips and naff tricks. with their EGO's and then they get heard. see train safe not sorry. u waan get up my end. few good spots!!!
darktim99 3 years ago
Thanks Tim. I knew this would tie in with your outlook on parkour :) Let me know when you're next training at the flats and I'll make a point of heading over in that direction for some more of that brutal conditioning!!
