I have to say this particular Woody cartoon left me uneasy. (Ma runs out on the family, poor Dad trys to take care of that brat, and then the suicide attempt at the end.) No station would EVER air this cartoon today!
During this period in the,in the early fifties, there was no writer on staff at the Walter Lantz studio,so dialogue was kept to a minimum in the cartoons.
This show is sad because it reminds me of how old I'm gonna get and the lack of energy I'll have in which it's starting to go downhill from here. I would identify myself as the woodpecker at 5:16. I hope I die before my body deterioriates. If I do manage to reach very old age, I would want to kill myself as well.
(2) Woody's mom was a "ingrate" by not raising Woody (their only Male child after raising 7 daughters) & leaving Woody's pop to raise him by himself.
(3) Woody's inner self dicieds to tell Woody to end it all by jumping off a cliff into his grave. BUT a kind hearted cartoonist had second thoughts & decides to change the grave into a "Fountain of Youth", thus changing Woody back to his young self again.
Poor Woody, abandoned by his mother and his father was completely unprepared for his wild and unruly son. The final scene of Woody attempting suicide is bleak, never see this one on tv today.
this short was made after Walt Lantz decided to update Woody's look after a number of years. In fact, he hadn't even casted Woody's new voice when it was made. This is why Woody only laughed in the cartoon.
I remember, watching this. This was a heartwarming short, when an elder Woody reminices his infancy. He tortured his father, which was not bright at all. He fell into the fountain of youth, and regained his crazy ol self. I give this a 7
é o melhor.

This was videotaped off Ch. 5 in NYC, who cut the baby bird's laugh out of the credits for some odd reason.

This is a real bittersweet short especially for the rather kinetic pace Woody cartoons usually are.
