whats wrong with psychiatry is that its a religion. (not saying religion is bad...but it psychiatry poses as science) in reality its just a little bit a science and lotsa lotsa shamanism.
however biochemistry is fascinating, don't get me wrong.
Do you know anything about science and the scientific method? Psychiatry of a field of medicine, but the science behind it (neuroscience, etc) follows the scientific method. Religion does not.
as someone who has been marched through the various drugs for depression and anxiety i know that they are GROUNDED in science...but they only help you when you FEEL that they will help you. when you BELIEVE they will help you. as someone with such a cynical, skeptical mind ive found that kind of FAITH is much like the religious kind.
wow, the guy made it is so smart, Lets take a beautiful person, and correct him with more of our bullshit, you have no respect for this human being (the one who edit it).
you are a fool and you present exactly what is wrong with psychiatry, sadism!
Why are people attacking psychiatrist for how psychiatry today is practiced. Modern day pschiatry wasn't developed just by psychiatrist. In order to prove psychiatry as a fraud, you would have to prove the work done by the thousands of neuroscientist, and pharmacologist false (which helped develop the practice of modern day psychiatry) .
Nervousneuron couldn't a doctor look for metabolites in the cerebro spinal fluid obtained through a spinal tap to potentially diagnose a psychiatric disorder?
The probs with that is the hypothesis is this stuff happens in the synapse. Most transmitters are broken down before they could move anywhere else, and then taken back up into the cell before they can go anywhere, like the CSF, even if, they probably couldn't leave the blood brain barrier to enter the CSF, unless the BBB has been breached by infection, etc.
What MIGHT be possible is to make a radionuceotide that will tag a transmitter or metabolite and then image it on PET. This has been done for Parksinson's. I believe in Australia it is too expensive to do on anything else, so I'm not 100% if it's been done.
Hey bio student here. I just wanted to say that I appreciate your video on trying to shed some light on psychiatry. Most people who are against psychiatry watch some anti psychiatry video and then all of the sudden are authorities in psychiatry and are sure its a pseudoscience. Keep up the good work.
Another point I want to emphasize, is that depression can NEVER be a separate illness. It is only a SYMPTOM of either bodily dysfunction (physical disease) or mental trauma.
Psychiatry is basically a surrogate for religion. It is little more than a type of secular inquisition. Authorities always needed a way to control people's behavior. Before they told the "undesirables" that they were possessed by the devil; today, they tell them that they've got a mental illness.
Becuase I'm sure everyone who voluntarily commits themselves, or whose families desperately need them to regain their old ways feel that there is no disorder at all. You are misinformed and sheltered.
The problem with your argument is that we KNOW that Parkinson's or Alzheimer's can be verified by PATHOLOGISTS. We can objectively verify that their problems were a result of a damaged nervous system. Not so with ADHD, Schizophrenia, Bi-polar, Oppositional defiant disorder, Exhibitionism, Math learning disorder, etc, where 30 years of
extensive research failed to establish anything of objective value. No pathologist could EVER objectively verify a "schizophrenic", alive or at autopsy.
Actually you are wrong. Schizophrenics have been obeserved to have larger ventricles then people who do not have schizophrenia which can be seen through MRI's. Also pets scans show abnormal brain activity in shizophrenic patients.
Actually, no. There are some studies which claim to have found certain abnormalities in about half of the diagnosed schizophrenics, however:
1: Another HALF of these patients had brain scans within normal limits, and:
2: In most cases, the results were not adjusted for usage of mental health drugs, since most of these patients are drugged right away. These poisonous drugs, if consumed long enough, WILL eventually produce abnormal brain scan results.
Where did you find these studies so I can look at them? Spadonius I am curious, do you believe that the mind is a product of the brain? It seems like people who are against psychiatry, dont believe that the biological funtioning of the brain forms the mind.
I've just studied abstracts from Medline. Generally, there was an abundance of small studies, a lack of consistency in the findings, too many problematic confounding variables, and way too much wishful thinking on the part of psychiatrists. Search for schizophrenia+brain anomalies on Medline and check it out.
2. Haha, they thought of that, which is why they have another control group, a non schizophrenic (bipolar, etc cal also use the same antipsychotics) patient medicated with the same medication. Thompson et al., 2000 found a difference in grey matter density despite controlling for medication taken.
Really? I've just had a look at the Thompson study (Am J Psychiatry. 2000 Sep;157(9):1475-84.). The study involved 9 alledgedly "schizophrenic" adolescents on medication matched with a (surprise, surprise!) HEALTHY control group of 10 age-matched adolescents. In spite of it's dubious findings, the study was also very small and unblinded.
Another problem with your argument is that alzheimers is a psychiatric diagnosis. Have a look at the DSM. You will also find dementia due to Parkinsons, Huntingtons, Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and vascular. These all have known pathologies. And they are also in the DSM and they are all can be treated by psychiatrists.
While the others you mentioned cannot be diagnosed pathologically, it does not mean EVER. The future is not predictable, and we won't give up. They didn't give up on finding that gene for huntingtons. Even though it is unknown what the protein it makes, huntingtin really does. We don't know exactly why mood stabalizers, anti depressants, etc work, but they do for some people. And for those some people, which includes myself, they have changed their world completely.
The "Delirium, Dementia, and Amnestic and Other Cognitive Disorders" category including the aforementioned conditions, is actually the only more or less verifiable bit of the DSM. The key word here, however, is that all of these disorders were "borrowed" from the pathologists. Unlike psychiatrists, pathologists rely on documented physiological abnormalities that can be succesfully verified by objective tests in most cases (OTOH, Schizophrenia is considered to be outside the field of pathology).
The point is, dementia is a disorder of the mind, and that it is biologically based. It is some evidence (but not enough) to support that the mind is biologically based. Dementia is not differentially diagnosed by any pathologists, unless the brain is donated post mortum. Neuropsych tests, clinical history + observations are used to make the diagnosis. Brain scans *might* be used.
You are right. Psychiatry is NOT science. It is a field of medicine. Psychology is, though. It is a social science as it folllows the scientific method. Or maybe you could explain to us all how it doesn't? Theory isn't science, wtf? It's a part of science.
It's good to see some genuine response to all the anti-Psychiatry crap that you see here on You Tube. Keep up the good work, and don't let these naysayers get you down. They have nothing to back up their points, except to insult those of us who believe in Psychiatry and the cognitive neurosciences.
Ngogol. There is abuse in the system - please look at the foster care system very carefully - abuse that has damaged people on top of the damage they got from life. Please don't act like the population hasn't been used like guinea pigs - to fill out the gaps in understanding. Otherwise you are arguing that psychiatry has always been all knowing...which is bullshit because the research is ongoing. Duh.

Not really. You just have to prove that the principles by which they were taught are false/unfounded...
