Grover pioneered the way for your top solo sax players of today. I remember when I performed with Grover live at the Jazz workshop in Boston many, many moons ago. At that time he mentioned he never performed with a guitarist but was willing to try it out.. The crowd loved it. He liked the idea so much he subsequently added a rhythm / lead guitar player to his band. I'm grateful glad to have performed with Grover for one full set. We all miss the late great Grover Washington Jr..
this is one of the tightest live performances i have ever seen. and what need be said of the worlds greatest timekeeper...steve gadd. my gadd that was awesome!!!
@RAWRDJBEAR How could anyone give this a thumbs down? This is perhaps my favorite Grover Washington performance. I am from Philly and very upset I never saw him live. He left us so suddenly. Just bought the CD 'to Grover with Love' by Jason Miles. Not a plug of any kind just a recommendation of a great CD of Grovers music. Mr Magic is haunting that I cant get out of my mind.
Look at how happy our departed friend is in this video!
That's all I want to see -- Grover happy. That is all God wants him to feel.
(And who could blame him? He has Eric Gale scratching out the very theme of this song, the very statement that we all identify with this masterpiece! Not to say that Steve Gadd is any less of a MONOLITH on his drums. Not to say that Anthony Jackson isn't considered by most one of the best ever. Not to ignore the UNITY of this performance!)
@kcred3 loved is past tense, i hope you mean you love grover as i do, because anyone who loves grover knows that these new cats they have on the radio and the ones even before them don't even come close to Grover's beauty on the sax, i will always listen to him more than anything else because his skill is forever timeless.
Hi, thanks for mailing me. This is Part 2. Part 1 is fairly short, it's where Grover and Eric Gale go solo. Part 1 features Steve doing the drum solo.
To one the best that ever did it!!! May you rest in peace. Now the Angels get to hear you play and I am sure God is pleased. Play on my Brother, Play on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His performance of Mr. Magic live at the Biju is probably the finest...the one which has a message from the doctor..Dr. Gibbs..it was on this site...pity it has been removed.
Anthony Jackson is one of the greatest Bassist of all time! It seems like he took James Jamerson's style and made a whole innovative approach all his own... Supportive and one of a kind.
he's a real control freak in the studio...not trying to rain down on your parade. but you'd have to meet him or play with him; people can be different in person....which is a real shame. But him being such a control freak makes good records, so if thats what you gotta do...
These are my favorite types of drum solos. Maybe I'm showing my age (50), but I'd rather listen to this than an endless barrage of flurries & riffs between the hands & feet w/no musical form or direction.
I have played this song with so many bands, that I vowed to never play it again! However, I shall listen to it forever. My idols are Carter CC Collins (one of the best ever), Armando Peraza, Mongo Santamaria, Francisco Aguabella, and Ralph Macdonald, just to name a few.
If you're a Grover fan get "Live at the Bijou" on CD,it's one of my favourite live recordings. Mister Magic really grooves on this CD. R.I.P. Grover. The music will never die.
I knew Grover from Phila. Also I heard him play in fairmont Park solo playing to the trees solo ,WOW I also was to be auditioned as a guitar player for his band and ended up playing country music every where in the U.S and Canada
He will always be one of the greatest sax players that ever lived God took him to soon I know in my heart he had more great music for us but was taken to soon now he is making beautiful music in the Heavens
I dont why because I am not a drummer, but I love it when a great drummer uses traditional grip....there is some kind of different snap that comes about. Of course, being Steve Gadd helps.
Give the drummer some...he is wicked...Peace.
