Obviously he didn't want them to get away with the G-Virus sample so he injected himself in attempt to stop them - which was actually successful. If he had injected himself with the "Superhuman" virus, he would have to play dead for years on end.

No, actually, I like the story. In fact, the story is the only reason as to why I watched walkthroughs (and "let's play"s) of the old RE games. Personally- I enjoyed RE4's style more than I'd enjoy the style of RE1-3.

Well, I know I'm not alone. RE4 and RE5 individually sold more than RE3, CV and 0 as a whole.

Obviously, RE4 and 5 sold really well, and as such, the action games got a much bigger fan base than the horror ones, and a lot of the action fans aren't really fans of the old style (otherwise the old games would have sold better). So there are lots of people that don't like the old REs, but like the new ones. I myself like the new gameplay but I like the storyline as a whole.

First there's RE1. It takes place long before the other games.

After that, there's RE2. It spans about 24 hours.
