Jim Kelly is a quality person with whom i have great respect for. Jim gave us pride during the 70's Kung Fu mania craze. I went to see him here in Houston in 1976. Lol shameless plug. Anyway, I do know Lee and Kelly were good friends, but the fact doesn't change. His biggest role in his career was enter the dragon. His other good movies were three the hard way etc... but because of his race and the hype of bruce lee's death, he really couldn't stand out like he could of. That's what I'm saying. He could and should have been more of a star than he was.

Not really the biggest martial arts star we had has been Wesly Snipes. Michael Jai White is better than Wesley Snipes but because Wesley has done more diverse roles he is a bigger house hold name. It was hard during that period especially in Hollywood. I mean look how many American Asian actors have been given martial roles in Hollywood. I mean as lead role not a side role or backup. I don't mean Jackie or Jet Martial Arts world in Hollywood is very narrow minded.

Indeed, Snipes is an action star not a martial arts star. Also his era was the 90's. Things changed, Kelly came out in the 70s. Racial tensions and whatnot was still prevelant in his time, limiting his success. As for modern days, theres not really any martial art stars right now. ITs more only action stars.

And if you watch him closely, he uses doubles and his training looks like shotokan. very wide stances and poor balance. I never said he wasn't a martial artist, I just said he wasn't a martial arts star. There is a difference. Yes he used martial arts in his movies, but that doesn't make him a martial arts star. Secondly, the highest rank in capoeira is mestre meaning master. It doesn't use degrees like eastern martial arts. Yes he practices kung fu and shotokan, but that still doesnt make him an martial arts star. Bruce lee was one, jackie chan, jet li, jim kelly. The list goes on, Snipes is not in it.

I said he wasn't a martial arts star. Just because an actor uses martial arts in movies, doesn't make you a martial arts star. I'm in Capoeria. I learned it in Brazil, the home land, so I know how everything works. There is no such thing as a degree rank in Capoeria. In real capoeria ie traditonal capoeria there is aluno- student, graduado-graduated, formado -formed, professor- teacher and mestre- master. some ranks are comparable, but still not degrees.

You are down playing Bruce lee's death. His sudden death created a legend out of him. I'm not saying he wasn't a visionary, but some of his hype comes from the fact that he brought eastern martial arts to the mainstream and he popularized cross training (something the military past and ancient have been doing). However he was still a great martial artist that contributed in his own right.

I am not down playing Jim Kelly, he is an inspiration of mine; however, he is still a black man in the 70's, in hollywood, he's treading new territory, thus his opportunities were limited. Yes he was into his craft than the politics of hollywood, but its naieve to think Jim kelly wouldn't be bigger now, that more opportunity in hollywood has opened up from African Americans compared to the 70's

and my last point. A lot of Chuck Norris' fame was his connection to Bruce lee. I'm going to give him credit, he is a skilled martial artist, but, who you know is more important to what you know. A person Lee would recommend to, would be very popular within the martial arts community because Lee had tremendous credibility. Its similar to Maggie Q. She was picked by Jackie Chan in the 90's. Even though she had no experience, being selected personally by him is instant recognition
