I remember hearing that Charles Shultz, creator of the original Peanuts cartoon, wanted real children to voice his characters instead of the still industry-standard women voice actors. The reason for the woodeness is that he got his wish and one of the voice actors had to have the script read to them... word by word.
i remember a one version of the Christmas Carol that was set in the present day, only reason why i even remember it is because it had a weird clip with ninjas, the North Pole and James Bond
I never got into "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "A Charlie Brown Christmas", or "A Christmas Story". As mainstream as they are, I just found them boring. Charlie Brown Christmas is just fucked up. I suffer from severe depression and even I don't get THAT low on Christmas.
@mupty are you kidding me? Charlie Brown may have some down moments but that ending and Linus's monologue are awesome. It's also one of the few movies that tell the origin's of Christmas. Well the origins of the Christmas we celebrate. I get flack from wiccans about how we stole the holiday but honestly, I don't care.
My favourite Chrismas Carol is still the Patrick Stewart version and also check out the best modrn adaptation starring Ross Kemp. So I recommend it HIGHLY!
@whatevers31 We who hate A Christmas Story live in the shadows... and live in Florida where snow is a myth and don't see what all the commotion is about.
I have to admit I love 'Its Christmas Time again, Charlie Brown' more than 'Charlie Brown Christmas'. Search for it on youtube if you haven't seen it, its hillarious!!
Funny story. When I was 10 my dad bought a red rider lever action bb gun for my birthday. The same day we watched a Christmas story even though it was January. We had a good time and that memory still stand out to some nine years later.
i didnt really like its a wonderful life and i only saw the remake of the grinch it was ok i never saw the charlie brown one either i didnt really like a christmas carol and i never saw a christmas storu either
@PoohFanGirl1990 yes I agree. I'm Catholic and get so sick of people saying "Oh it's a holiday tree not a Christmas tree, it makes the atheists feel bad or some crap" It's always been called a Christmas Tree; tradition. It upsets me so much that they always pick on the Christians. But I digress, Christmas is a time for celebrating and family. Religious or not. ;)
@DjHamHam411 So few other Catholics on youtube nowadays, refreshing to meet them and I agree with both of you. I just love when Linus comes out and quotes the gospel of Luke and that brings everyone together. It reminds me of when people remembered and showed respect for Christ in Christmas instead of being overly worried about tolerance, so much so that they put aside toleration for Christians and Catholics
I think A Charlie Brown Christmas works simply because it includes the birth of Christ in its message. And in today's politically correct world, it's refreshing. It doesn't throw religion in your face but it's very straightforward. I think that's why even people who aren't religious can enjoy it. Speaking as a Christian who likes almost every Christmas special, religious or not, it's definitely one of a kind.
A Charlie Brown Christmas is my #1 pick for the best Christmas special. It's not overly elaborate, it's not that colorful, it's not even that cheerful. It's very simple but honest. Or as Doug puts "There's no bullsh#t. What you see is what you get." It gives me this indescribable feeling that no other special provides. It really is just perfect. I always love watching it every year and I can't wait to share it with my future children.
wait,i NEVER his in the cuppord when i was scared, and i never fantasized something like that when i was punished, but i never would stick my toung on somethin during winter
Critic nailed it on the head with the last scene from Christmas Story. It almost feels like a P.S or an afterthought, which is odd because it's so simple and so perfect and really does sum up what is often the most memorable part of christmas, sitting with loved ones and watching snow (or rain in my case because I don't get snow where I live, but it's still a nice feeling)
I can see his complaint of the live action Grinch film. As with most performances, Jim Carrey goes way over the top. The Grinch is not that kind of character, he's a grumpy old man pretty much. Jim Carrey can be subtle when given a chance, but most directors have him going overboard. That was the same problem with A Series of Unfortunate Events. Count Orlaf is supposed to be sinister not goofy.
@tricksterhuaun And I said that when given a chance that he can be subtle. So there was really no need for you to respond that way to what I said. It was kind of a dick move on your part dude.
I also like the christmas specials. That's the only time of year where cartoon network do the old stuff and it's not 6 in the morning or last thing at night :) I've always liked the powerpuff girls:the fight before christmas. I must have seen that at least twice a year when it's on
I think the Critic's two Christmas list videos are just as much Christmas specials as anything on either one of the lists. I mean...I watch them around Christmas time just as I would anything else he mentioned and get that warm, fuzzy holiday feeling just the same.
a christmas story is definitely one of those timeless movies that even i identified w/ when i was a kid. not only that but it was an amazing period piece. they got everything down to the snowflakes making you believe you were in the 50's (i think). and it definitely has many unforgettable moments. good list. and jim carrey's grinch wasn't terrible but i can see why he doesn't like it.
I thought my family was the only one that watches a christmas story from the beginning to the the last showing of the year, also I think that Charlie Brown Christmas deserve that number 2 spot, I mean COME ON! Every freakin person in America has had to have seen it once! And I can't have christmas without seeing it!
Watching those clips from a Charlie Brown Christmas literally brought me back to my childhood. No special makes me feel like Christmas (you know the feeling!!) like that one. Were I to make the list, I'd put that at #1. Plus it's the only one in this list that tells the Biblical story of Christmas and, believe it or don't believe it, it is where the holiday came from so it really IS what Christmas is all about. (I'm a Christian btw so yes I do believe it)
I feel so bad because I've never even heard of A Christmas Story, I'll have to check it out.
My all-time favourite Christmas film is Home Alone 1 and 2 back-to-back :) Mostly because my little brother is the spitting image of Culkin in those films (My Girl always kills me too) so it always makes me cry at the end. But I also love how funny and sweet they are. And as a kid I always wished my parents had left me behind with their credit card!
isn't number six also called "chevy chase's christmas vacation?" if not, don't start bitching about how much of a moron i am, because that's what it says on my vhs cover
For my money, the Muppet Christmas Carol was the best adaptation, oddly enough. Michael Caine is the greatest Ebenezer Scrooge ever, the style and presentation are second to none, and the songs are near perfect. Plus, it has humor, and great humor at that. Just my favorite, that's all...
in my family, its tradition to watch a chrismas story once a day starting on december 1st, and then on christmas day watching it all day. i love that tradition. we also quote it on a regular bases. oh what fun a christmas story brought to my family. :)
How can Rudolph not be on this list? I mean he includes a disgusting Christmas-themed south park episode, but not Rudolph?! Gimme a break... Not to mention that a few of the things he talks about were made in the 2000s; not very nostalgic if you ask me.
I HATED "a christmas story".... it reminded me so much of the dysfunctional -ness of my family growing up, and nothing about it was memorable charming or endearing. The movie just reminded me that childhood kinda sucks.
I think that Michael Caine should have been in a real adaption of the Christmas Carol, not in the Muppet version. Not that I'm saying the Muppet version was bad but Caines performance was to good to be used in a movie where the cast is manily puppets.
My grandmother had to explain to me the whole "Mary Baily/Old Maid/Libarerian" thing when I saw this movie: apparently back then it was common for unmarried "homely" women to be libarians. ...........huh?
I think Its a Wonderful Life should be number 1, but besides that this is a pretty good list, although I'm surprised there wasn't a single Rankin/Bass special on it
@theSuperMetroid Yeah, but although the ending is a classic, I felt really unsatisfied that they didn't tie up the loose ends with Mr. Bower illegally confiscating that money. What a asshole!
The Critic makes a good point @ 1:18-1:22: It may have been an awful Christmas, but it's the kind of thing that would give the Griswolds a lot of memories to look back on and laugh about over future family gatherings.
I always thought his # 1 choice for this was kind of overrated. I mean, it's funny and deserves its classic status and all, but it just didn't move me the way some of the others listed have.
lol I thought I was the only one who hid in the closet. Funny, I love watching this Nostalgic episode because Christmas is coming 25 days of Christmas on Family Channel is what I look forward too.
@Leatherbubba yeah... it was a stupid movie... but its FASCINATING to watch... i mean, the original book was only like 15 pages long. they had to create a WHOLE WORLD for it to take place in, and ill be damned if it doesnt look cool at times... sure some parts are creepy (Grinch love interest... eugh...) and you can tell the only people who are trying are Jim Carrey, the dog, and pre-bitch Taylor Momsen, but its an alright movie

Not that I'm saying the Muppet version was bad but Caines performance was to good to be used in a movie where the cast is manily puppets.

taranchula97 1 year ago 45
@taranchula97 in my opinion the Jim Carrey version is the best!!!
ThePokeman007 1 year ago
@taranchula97 maybe because the only thing interesting there is Jim Carrey
srnefe 1 year ago
@taranchula97 Agreed. I really enjoyed that remake. To be honest, however, I don't like the original. I do not care for for it really.
ECL28E 1 year ago
@taranchula97 Because that version changed the point of the story for the worst.

My grandmother had to explain to me the whole "Mary Baily/Old Maid/Libarerian" thing when I saw this movie: apparently back then it was common for unmarried "homely" women to be libarians. ...........huh?
sillygrl23 1 year ago
I think Its a Wonderful Life should be number 1, but besides that this is a pretty good list, although I'm surprised there wasn't a single Rankin/Bass special on it
theSuperMetroid 1 year ago
@theSuperMetroid Yeah, but although the ending is a classic, I felt really unsatisfied that they didn't tie up the loose ends with Mr. Bower illegally confiscating that money. What a asshole!

My family and I watch "It's a Wonderful Life" every Christmas Eve
TheDumbSongChannel 1 year ago
The Critic makes a good point @ 1:18-1:22: It may have been an awful Christmas, but it's the kind of thing that would give the Griswolds a lot of memories to look back on and laugh about over future family gatherings.
I always thought his # 1 choice for this was kind of overrated. I mean, it's funny and deserves its classic status and all, but it just didn't move me the way some of the others listed have.

lol I thought I was the only one who hid in the closet. Funny, I love watching this Nostalgic episode because Christmas is coming 25 days of Christmas on Family Channel is what I look forward too.
DjHamHam411 1 year ago
The Ron Howard Grinch was not that good, but I thought Jim Carrey was really funny in it.
Leatherbubba 1 year ago
@Leatherbubba yeah... it was a stupid movie... but its FASCINATING to watch... i mean, the original book was only like 15 pages long. they had to create a WHOLE WORLD for it to take place in, and ill be damned if it doesnt look cool at times... sure some parts are creepy (Grinch love interest... eugh...) and you can tell the only people who are trying are Jim Carrey, the dog, and pre-bitch Taylor Momsen, but its an alright movie
SonicSnail95 1 year ago
@SonicSnail95 It's a damn classic compared to the Cat in the Hat movie.
