I'm a music major. I'm taking string methods. I only played violin, viola and cello for two months at a time and I sounded better than that. This isn't really a youth orchestra. Those are definatly teens. they should be capable to play in tune. But it OBVIOUS that it isn't their fault. Their conductor oozes awful technique; it's kind of obvious she isn't a great teacher. Just saying.

Now if you want to get technical to prove I know what I'm talking about, I'm impressed that she's got almost all of her players playing C-sharp correctly. Everyone's bows are overall together, I see only 1 bad wrist in the violin section. I could use some more dynamics and less knee movement from the conductor, but overall - a good performance.

As for the director, she seems new. When I first began, I barely moved, barely cued and barely breathed simply because I didn't want to seem as "flamboyant". She clearly has an idea of what she's doing, but needs to be more exaggerated with her movements.

I am a middle school orchestra conductor, professional violinist and private instructor. For a group this age, they sound fucking great. I'm assuming they're a public school orchestra of some sort full of a.) children that don't care looking for an easy A or b.) a community-ed group with 1 short rehearsal a week. I play at Brooklyn High School of the Arts.I play Bass in my orchestra. They're medicore, but I just try to bare with it. I'm like the only Bassist who actually practice seriously. Its a damn shame :(

I have mixed feelings about this. While it is very obvious that they are trying their hardest, I think their conductor is doing them a disservice by not properly teaching them how to tune their instruments and listen to each other. When I was band council president and section leader in high school, *I* taught the freshmen how to tune their instruments... I felt that their middle school teacher should have done that. The difference between a tuned band and a non-tuned one is huge!

Like people have been saying, this is actually quite decent for a high school ensemble. All that they need is a little bit of private intonation work to fix some of those tuning issues. It's only actually one or two members who are slightly out of tune.

Not the worst 'orchestra'..I've been in and heard "worst" orchestra's, a long time ago. But cut them a break though, we all had to start somewhere and grow from our experiences. I must say, the age group is a little surprising, but hey, everyone has to start somewhere. Not disagreeing with the "ewws" and claims of imperfection. Just don't expect professional quality from "seemingly" beginning level musicians. I appreciate that they're trying to learn.
