I dont know about that anymore, I upgraded to vista recently and havint gotten a single compatability issue. My comp starts up in like 40 secs and shutsdown in about another 40. When i was running xp it did the same but took twice as much time. Also i once put a disk in a shredder and it kinda broke. so im not sure if thats even a good idea to begin with >.>
As Far as i can tell on vista there are no problems. Also i really don't ever deal with dvd's or cds anymore. All my drivers or antivirus(Avast) programs are internet downloadable. Also functionally vista has been better. Alot of the crap id had to deal with in xp such as duel core optimization or amd processor drivers are gone. its just there. Also having to fish around for my network drivers disk is a thing of a past, the internet is basicly plug and play.

I used Avast before. It is ok, but it had problems deleting really difficult malwares that AVG had no problem getting rid of. Quite simple, AVG is better period!
Avast also struggles with false positives at times. You would probably not experience problems on Vista, since all you want it for is to look pretty.
People that actually have things to do, & clone DVD movies, or game disks that are copy protected would notice that XP is far more stable & far better as an OS to clone without crashing!

*NOTE: do not live iPod plugged in while installing/rebooting :)
first, it was stuck in a DOS like phase and wouldn't turn on. then it looked like i had to use my back up drive as it was a black GUI-less screen loading about the same amount of files in my back up drive. It scared the hell out of me as it was a brand new $1,200 computer which looked as if it just broke and microsoft was to blame.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
dude, thats like impossible windows 32bit only ready 2gb [2048mb] how could it magicaly read 3.5 and 4 for you when microsoft says it doesnt work and everyone else who's tryed it says it doesnt. POST PROOF, LIKE 3 PEOPLE HAVE DONE IT.
tell u what to all of u guys i am on a p4 2.66 with 1 gb ram ati readon 9600xt agp
lemme tell u all my devices work even my 5 yr old analog tv card 90% of all my software has 6 month old or less drivers. vista has been awesome so far not a single issue.
dont believe the crap about stuff not working on vista
halo1 gta sa gta vice city madden 08 fs9 all work awesome even they are better on vista then xp so stop crying dled vista sp1 and shut up already
I installed Vista Service Pack 1 on my machine last week and I had been using Vista for nearly a year and had not many problems, but amusingly, a little while later I tried to Compress my C drive and Vista's compression software worked nicely...unfortunately it worked a little bit too well and compressed BOOTMGR, meaning that windows wouldn't boot up and I had to format the whole drive! I LOVE IT..and I also like strangers to punch me in the face for no reason! Honest...
dude u have pirated vista no? me too, dont upgrade if u have pirated only if u have certified cuz is sp1 they have something called CRACK KILLER and it makes all pirated vista machine unbootable, therefore you not only will not upgrade vista, but ur machine will not have an OS to boot into
Apologises, I thought I had inserted my two previous postings below as replies. The first was to the valid point raised by `Sivazh`, the other was a response to the articulate `MouthofSaurons`.
i'm finally upgrading to vista today. I tried it ages ago and had no problems on my laptop but never put it on my desktop. now i've got my new desktop i'll try it again.
Chris, as the previous comments suggest, I am not a big fan of Vista. I have used Windows for years, but for me my computer is a `work tool` not a hobby. Vista is the first release that I have found unacceptable and the process of upgrading to SP1 to be equally unacceptable for the average user. I can think of no other product that could be marketed and sold without contravening the Sales of Goods Act (UK)/(US)?
Clearly you like to live up to your username. I just bought my laptop from Dell. Of course, you might be right, but then the Dell shouldn't have sold it with Vista. Maybe you could write to Dell on my behalf, as you clearly have a way with words.
I got a western digital mybook pro edition2 external hard drive a while ago and couldnt find a vista driver anywhere. Would that driver be on the SP1 or will the SP1 make no difference to that problem?
I installed SP1 tonight. It took quite a while and I thought my laptop was a goner but now it's all good. I don't have the disc since I downloaded Vista and downloaded SP1 cracked, and the reason I have SP1 is because I like updating in general lol
my computer is 4 yrs old. i have only added a 256mb N-Vidia Geforce 5500. cost me £30. and i added 2 512mb Ram to my system from Ebay. cost me £20. and Vista runs like a beauty on my pc. No problems. Dont take other peoples word for it that is shit. you wont no until you try it yourself.
Installed SP1 last night-When I restarted got message that there was no driver for multimedia video card. Could hardly read screen-all pastel and jagged but everything worked. Saw something about PCI #3 not working. My PCI #3 is sound card.?? I shut down, took out sound card-restarted-everything then A-OK.Put sound card back in-still all-OK....
-_- crashed my system. it took me a few hours to get it back up again. restore, safe mode, and system repair didnt work...i had to do several hours of hacking and tweaking...here's the message I got..
I know a lot of people have had trouble with Vista, I am really glad that I haven't been one of them. I bought a new laptop with the resources to handle Vista and more, and haven't had a single problem. Just installed SP1 and seem to be fine. Sucks for those who have had problems. All my hardware, software, etc. work fine. Mixed bag I guess.
most people who have problems dont know anything and try to install it on their xp computers, they dont realy even read the requirments or ask anyone about what kinda of ram or video cards they might need. Instead they just buy it, crash thier pc and wonder why lol :)
Yeah, actually, SP1 has been beneficial as well. Since installing it, Windows boots up faster, and my network connection is recognized as soon as Windows boots up. Before it would take anywhere up to 30 seconds for it to get connected. Now, it's available immediately.
Actually, I wouldn't disagree that there are undoubted benefits with SP1. My concern is that it has taken a lot of time to get all my existing applications/printers to work with Vista and SP1 makes no guarantees that these downloaded work-rounds will still work after downloading a 400M upgrade. My main point was, and still is, that the product quality of Vista was unacceptable, as it has probably caused millions of hours of frustration to many of its customers.
Hah! I've been telling Windows fanboys for months that primarily Vista SP1 was simply going to be full of bug fixes and no real major enhancements or features. Maybe now they'll stop stop flaming my old YT account.
Dude, I have been using Windows for 12+ years. And the definition of a service pack is on Microsoft's own freaking website (it's a bundle of security updates and bug fixes by their definition). Microsoft fanboy's just called me a mac fanboy who knows nothing simply because I use a Mac (yeah, not like my experience from Windows 3.1 to Vista matters at all). That's like saying Chris is a dumbass about Windows simply because he prefers the Mac. Of course that's no the case.
Either chris held himsellf REALLY good, or he forgot to put the Vista CD back in its cover. i clearly saw an X there:P BTW, i have vista, but i wont upgrade yet..
With SP1, the search option is no longer available in the start menu! you can press CTRL+F in any folder or in "computer" to bring up the search. Or you can use any other 3d party application. But seriously ... for this fact only , Vista is going down even more!
if vista is soo crap u guys. why is it already beatin Macs Osx L in the market share. the only 1 who is stopping vista winning at the moment is Xp. lol. dont come up with the excuse. ehh most pcs come with vista installed. well so do Macs come with OSX L installed. and i bought Vista off ebay 4 £75 the OEM version and its great.its just because peeps prefer Pcs over Macs. simple as that. and apple would have trouble runing their OS on PCs lol
Because vista is preinstalled in most computers. And microsoft has a near monopoly on the computer industry. Also you're a moron who uses bad grammar and uses idiotic instant messenger speak and can't see the obvious!
its not microsoft. its apple just cant compete. and who bailed Apple outta trouble. MICROSOFT. and u must be the only person who doesnt use WLM u knob. and i can say things the way i like and u cant stop me. asswipe
And you must be the biggest dumbass on the face of the planet. Microsoft bailed Apple out? By what, donating a mere $150 million to Apple to have Mac's ship with Internet Explorer? Any idea how much Apple paid to get Steve Jobs back? $429 million. Wow, yes, Microsoft's investment really does cover that...
Dude, you're a f*cking idiot. First off, did you know that Wikipedia is user edited? Yes, that's right. Other Microsoft fanboy's like yourself can edit it to say anything (like Beethoven lost his balls instead of hearing, which has been edited in to Wikipedia before). Apple would have to be a dumbass to donate all of their money just to get back Steve Jobs. That $150 million was just a nice boost, but they were nowhere near bankrupt.
Here's why: Microsoft already owns 90% of the market. It doesn't take much effort to have a new OS gain marketshare for them. But, seeing as how you clearly lack the knowledge of college-level statistics, here's something to ponder: what percentage of Windows users have upgraded to Vista and what percentage of Mac users have upgraded to Leopard. It's simple math, so you can handle it. But, fyi, you'll find that Leopard has more people upgrading to it percentage-wise than Vista.

And the number 1 tip for installing Vista, is:
- Turn on Shredder
- Stick your Vista disk in it
That's how good Vista is! Total garbage!
XP is much faster, is stable, & just plain more usable!

I have XP on mine.
You must either have a slow machine, or not know how to configure windows.
Mine boots from power on, into windows in 15 seconds.
Vista was built on TCP + DRM management technologies, which break a lot of digital copying processes, or certain copy processes period!
I work on computers. I know!
XP eats Vista for lunch on copying certain digital ahem, things! DVD's for instance...
Yes, it is possible in Vista, but XP does it faster, better, & with less problems!

When I installed SP1 i scared the hell out of me
*NOTE: do not live iPod plugged in while installing/rebooting :)
first, it was stuck in a DOS like phase and wouldn't turn on. then it looked like i had to use my back up drive as it was a black GUI-less screen loading about the same amount of files in my back up drive. It scared the hell out of me as it was a brand new $1,200 computer which looked as if it just broke and microsoft was to blame.

Honest...
chrissaboy 3 years ago
dude u have pirated vista no? me too, dont upgrade if u have pirated only if u have certified cuz is sp1 they have something called CRACK KILLER and it makes all pirated vista machine unbootable, therefore you not only will not upgrade vista, but ur machine will not have an OS to boot into

1namewilldo 3 years ago
As anybody asked whether Vista contravenes the `Sale of Goods Act`? i.e.
• Wherever goods are bought they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality.
• Quality implies fitness for purpose and freedom from minor defects.
• If goods do not conform to contract at the time of sale, purchasers can request their money back "within a reasonable time.
1namewilldo 3 years ago
There's only 1 tip necessary before installing Vista: DON'T.
1namewilldo 3 years ago
@1namewilldo
I am sure you dont have Vista and just are jealoux or your pc is too weak pile of sh*t to not run Vista.
MouthofSaurons 3 years ago 3

I know a lot of people have had trouble with Vista, I am really glad that I haven't been one of them. I bought a new laptop with the resources to handle Vista and more, and haven't had a single problem. Just installed SP1 and seem to be fine. Sucks for those who have had problems. All my hardware, software, etc. work fine. Mixed bag I guess.
sivazh 3 years ago
most people who have problems dont know anything and try to install it on their xp computers, they dont realy even read the requirments or ask anyone about what kinda of ram or video cards they might need. Instead they just buy it, crash thier pc and wonder why lol :)
dmoney0015 3 years ago
thank you for saying that once. I almost felt like I am the only one who is in this situation allways saying "wtf? it works just fine"
CELERIS99 3 years ago
Yeah, actually, SP1 has been beneficial as well. Since installing it, Windows boots up faster, and my network connection is recognized as soon as Windows boots up. Before it would take anywhere up to 30 seconds for it to get connected. Now, it's available immediately.
sivazh 3 years ago

STFU you Mactard! Don't speak about things that you don't know!
SuperiorBeen 3 years ago
Dude, I have been using Windows for 12+ years. And the definition of a service pack is on Microsoft's own freaking website (it's a bundle of security updates and bug fixes by their definition). Microsoft fanboy's just called me a mac fanboy who knows nothing simply because I use a Mac (yeah, not like my experience from Windows 3.1 to Vista matters at all). That's like saying Chris is a dumbass about Windows simply because he prefers the Mac. Of course that's no the case.

With SP1, the search option is no longer available in the start menu! you can press CTRL+F in any folder or in "computer" to bring up the search. Or you can use any other 3d party application. But seriously ... for this fact only , Vista is going down even more!

what are you talking about the search is till there mine hasn't disappeared

if vista is soo crap u guys. why is it already beatin Macs Osx L in the market share. the only 1 who is stopping vista winning at the moment is Xp. lol. dont come up with the excuse. ehh most pcs come with vista installed. well so do Macs come with OSX L installed. and i bought Vista off ebay 4 £75 the OEM version and its great.its just because peeps prefer Pcs over Macs. simple as that. and apple would have trouble runing their OS on PCs lol
chrismc20050 3 years ago
Because vista is preinstalled in most computers. And microsoft has a near monopoly on the computer industry. Also you're a moron who uses bad grammar and uses idiotic instant messenger speak and can't see the obvious!
simontam777 3 years ago
its not microsoft. its apple just cant compete. and who bailed Apple outta trouble. MICROSOFT. and u must be the only person who doesnt use WLM u knob. and i can say things the way i like and u cant stop me. asswipe
chrismc20050 3 years ago
And you must be the biggest dumbass on the face of the planet. Microsoft bailed Apple out? By what, donating a mere $150 million to Apple to have Mac's ship with Internet Explorer? Any idea how much Apple paid to get Steve Jobs back? $429 million. Wow, yes, Microsoft's investment really does cover that...
/sarcasm
You're just a dumb ass Microsoft fanboy.
MacintechStudios 3 years ago
"Microsoft also purchased $150 million of non-voting Apple stock, badly needed by the Apple company at that time" Wikipedia Website
yes they stopped Apple going Bankrupt
plus even Paypal doesnt even support Safari because of security problems.
just proves they need some1 from microsft to help dem. so they paid that much for a person. SAD
chrismc20050 3 years ago
Dude, you're a f*cking idiot. First off, did you know that Wikipedia is user edited? Yes, that's right. Other Microsoft fanboy's like yourself can edit it to say anything (like Beethoven lost his balls instead of hearing, which has been edited in to Wikipedia before). Apple would have to be a dumbass to donate all of their money just to get back Steve Jobs. That $150 million was just a nice boost, but they were nowhere near bankrupt.
MacintechStudios 3 years ago
Here's why: Microsoft already owns 90% of the market. It doesn't take much effort to have a new OS gain marketshare for them. But, seeing as how you clearly lack the knowledge of college-level statistics, here's something to ponder: what percentage of Windows users have upgraded to Vista and what percentage of Mac users have upgraded to Leopard. It's simple math, so you can handle it. But, fyi, you'll find that Leopard has more people upgrading to it percentage-wise than Vista.
