Actually it's either octopodes or octopuses, octopodes means "beings with eight appendages" while octopuses is the plural of octopus, both of the words can be used as the plural of octopus, but octopuses is most commonly used, as far as I know.

Then again, they could just add octopii as an alternate synonym as well to get rid of the discussion, I wonder why they havn't already?
