The most boring are the predictable bollywood films with the same actors and actresses in film after film, fights where the hero always wins despite massive odds, the same old wooden dancing , slow motion love scenes and mime singing !!

The Japanese seem to have a fetish for films with crazy stories that feature extreme violence, blood thirsty murders, sexual perversions and also for young school girl in short skirts constantly flashing their panties, well after wasting my time watching this crazy film recently on film 4 recently which was featuring this actress, well all I can say is this film caters for all the needs of those who love these type of japanese films ......still whatever turns you on !!

@no1knowledge you completely missed every bit of symbolism that was perfectly spaced out through this movie. Although it was long, it was never boring! A great achievement for a movie like this regarding its running time, risk-taking plot/structure, characters, etc....

I think you will find that about the only people that this film will appeal to are from the country that it was made in. Japan turns out so many films of this kind as i have already stated. They also do extreme game shows that the rest of the world laughs at.

If you like,then enjoy but read the ''Emperers new suit'' by Hans Christain Anderson and that explains how people get brainwashed into thinking there is more to things than there really is, eg much of modern art for a start !

This film was the pits and I agree with what you say. In the same month there was another jap film on channel four films where a group of japanese school kids are put on an island, lots of violence, knicker flashing and mass murder etc , same old things , no more jap films for me anymore.

@Scotelgas Battle Royale is a philosophical simulation of man's nature and sense of survival vs. socially-reinforced conventions. There's more to it, if you think its only about violence. All cultures have their own cinematic trends. For example, US rom-coms have people tripping and shiz like that. That's because cultures shape media. Then again, maybe it just isn't your taste. :/

A very spirited and quasi intellectual defence from you to descripe a film in which the main character spends a large part of the story gazing at girls panties, apart of course from his frequent cross dressing whilst in pursuit of the girl who is the subject of his sexual desire's, oh and of course he has to steal some of her clothing, yes you guessed it, her panties, hehe

Panties, lesbianism, murder and even more panties, I wonder what Shakespeare would have made of the plot ?

@Scotelgas That may be, but don't forget: religion, morality and ethics, familial he relationships, friendship and...love;s implications. :) Panties, lesbianism and murder were all significant in the plot. For example, because of the panty shots, Yu was finally noticed by his dad.

Oh but he already has. So much of his plays were sexually charged but weren't explicit. :) For instance, Much Ado About Nothing has a steamy window scandal and a lot of comments about adultery, sexuality, etc.

@no1knowledge No, this film doesn't only aim to the target audience you theorize. It is shaped by its culture, yes.

The 'symbolisms' were planned out from the start. For example, Plato's Cave: The main point of the Cave is 'enlightenment' which is pretty much the central theme of the film. You can say also say that the film uses Corinthians 13 as its foundation. Take a closer look at the dialog, the production set-up, etc. This isn't a naked suit of a film. It's the real deal.

To me its very repetitive of the few jap films I have seen and to me me a lot of nonsense.

But as a reader of Jane Austin, Charles Dickens, the Brontes, C.S. Forester, Rudgard Kipling etc my tastes are conservative. Perhaps you could also make a good case for Tracey Emin and her works of art eg the Turner prize ''My Bed'' which composed of her bed strewn with dirty knickers, used condoms and general rubbish. We all have different tastes !!

@no1knowledge Indeed, we all have different tastes but we cannot dismiss something as nonsense without digging in the content. One could easily dismiss Austen's narratives as classical chick lit, Dickens' descriptiveness as superfluous imagery, etc. but shouldn't because a considering of the several layers of the material (mimetic, didactic, language, etc) is required understand and appreciate anything. It all depends on the perspective you choose. But nevertheless, your taste is your taste.

Oh sure the ''symbolism'' hehehe as no1knowledge says in his well written posts , an orgy of the normal crap that passes as japanese movies, school girl uniforms, lesbianism, knicker flashing and the normal bloodletting, explosions etc, ohh and for a change a bit of cross dressing thrown in !
