@beesleeper here's an example of an unhappy person, your comment is full of anger...maybe you should actually read up on atheists and how many people they have killed...you'll be glad to know that a study recently revealed that atheist are more selfish and less empathetic towards others
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
For further study - Ephesians 2:1-10
What a truth - the message of our key verse in our reading today, verse 8. It is the grace of our wonderful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ - it is the grace by which we are saved. There was no work that I could do to be made pure, only the blood of Jesus Christ could cleanse me, and you, and make us whole.
Why that number? And obviously the older civilizations have cared by the study of happiness as well, tough certainly not through the scientific method, but through philosophy and literature.
useless to study happines in a time with no middleclass, probably 1% of the population were "happy", and even of those 1% there would always be a relative great chance of illness. Let's study the happines of the medieval population were almost everyone were slave a like serfs that worked the fields 6 days a week, people were concerned about surviving, you would probably get an answer like "We had enough food to survive the winter and 5 of 9 kids has survived to reach adolescence!"
That's stupid, because American society is violent, competitive, and ruthless. There is no reason to teach your children happiness, because if it were natural, you would not need to teach it. What you are doing is creating an artificial happy environment for your children that has nothing to do with real life. They should understand that you sold a book and get recognition for it and that they are your experiment for your own gratification. And Berkeley wants to earn student fees and donations.
I think it takes AAAALLLLLL types to make the world turn..... bad, good, sympathetic, selfish, smart, dumb-as-shit, artistic, analitical, clean, dirty, rich, poor, romantic, logical. Duh?.....

@wcci1224 Your vision of reality, though it seems to pride itself on a false sense of practicality, is more reason in my mind to promote this type of work. I think Happiness within the parameters of a balanced succesful life is key.

Hmmm Hungry Children aren't happy, Homeless Children aren't happy. When people have the Basic Needs and are around good loving and wonderful people, then happiness comes in.
@TZMBigsteelguy very simple way to look at it. The brain is way more complex than that. Basic needs does not neccessarily equal happiness. Nor does all the other things one could want. I have a happy life with plentiful of money, friends and education etc. but I have increasingly high moodswings. This is also frustrating as I have no goal or no way to fight my problem other than thinking it through and through in my head where the source of my problems come from.
Ask someone who is Homeless if they are happy with their time here? They would probably say no, i would be happy if i had a bed to sleep on. Apparently in our profit driven selfesh reality, it is very difficult for the common man/woman/child to be happy when all we do is Compete, Fight, and Hoard more crap we just don't need.
IF human beings had access to the basic needs, and all the Energy and Free Education to better them selves without putting a price tag on it. Then people would be in a more better position to be happy.
Even Rich folks, or should i say people with great access to a shit load more are scared to death of losing their wealth and in no shape happy what so ever either.

@13andincrediblycutt in a sense yes but im not laughing because of that im laughing because it is irrelevant in this video and the comment is flagged as spam
They use the term "Sympathetic" instead of "Empathetic".
One is feeling badly for someone else, which I don't think people do a lot of.
I think we are more Empathetic. We internally simulate ourselves in the same position as the person we are watching, thus bringing our heart rate down and hormones up.
I think that whatever their results are, no matter how high the technology, their results will not be accurate. Everyone obtains happiness in different ways, some people are happy listening to music in their rooms, while others are equally happy getting outside and running around. It really depends on the person, their likes and interests, and how their brain works.
@theiamania There is certainly a positive correlation between financial wealth and happiness. Many economic studies and common sense proves this - but a lot of other things factors in as well. Nevertheless, all things being equal, more wealth, more money means more happiness.
@ChallengeDK We are not as far from each other as the people that made me comment the first time :) but still. There is a correlation between being able to feed yourself and happiness. There is a correlation between how many friends you have and happiness. There is a correlation between having a purpose in life and happiness. In fact there is a garanti that you will be happy if you have those 3 things, but there is NON in having money. As I see it the correlation is insignificant.
@theiamania I don't really think that there is a positive correlation between happiness and the quantity of friends. I could care less if I had 10 or 100 friends, as long as the friends I have are the real deal - as with so much else, it's about quality.
Other than that I tend to agree. Happiness is determined by an array of factors; even rich people can experience mid life crises - it's a matter of circumstance, but more money tend to never lead to less desirable outcomes; quite the contrary.
@theiamania actually there are studies to show that money = happiness, but only to a a certain extent. Which is to say that if you have enough money to live comfortably (i.e. provide for your family, pay bills, etc.) then you will be more happy than someone who doesn't. But the relationship between happiness and money doesn't really increase after those basic financial needs are met.
To add a counterpoint to the money=happiness argument, because I think you oversimplified it a bit. Happiness in the modern era isn't simply a matter of having a lot of money. Its a matter of being white and having a lot of money.
@queenbee8806 did u mean, at the end of your comment, that happiness does not increase further once the person has achieved that basic level of money that covers the amount of money to live comfortably?
you want to see happiness? look at a bunch of kids in preschool.....you want to see depression? look at a bunch of kids in middle school. Did you see that cold controlling bitch of a teacher in class in this video? Its bitches like that that destroy the well being of all children.
@ninhbac04 I am guessing that you don't have much, and think that getting it, will make you happy. Because I have a lot, and I know that that is just not what does it.
@theiamania I would HIGHLY disagree. I quit my job 3 months ago and can't find another one no matter how hard I try. And being without money has been the most stressful time of my entire life. I clearly remember when I had a job, that I was always so excited and happy whenever I bought something new. Money DOES equal happiness. Prove me wrong.
@kdecius I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble in life as am I. I'll be sure to send prayers your way.
Money does NOT equal happiness. Money does give you a sense of security, relieved stress, and thus allowed you to feel happier. But it was not money that gave you happiness, it was your relationships with others. Even if you have money and you could have anything you wanted but if you could not contact ANYONE at all (imagine walmart on a deserted island), you'll be one sad person. Cheers.
@Kuebic So you are saying it's not money itself that gives you happiness, but rather the things you buy with it.
In that case, we could go so far as to say it's not material objects or even personal relationships that give happiness, but the neurological processes they trigger. There's no end to it... your argument is invalid.
@kdecius What? I believe that because I was forced to wrap things up due to character restriction I caused some confusion.
Let me clarify and be very blunt on it: you don't need money to be happy. You can be dirty cheap poor and still be happy. You can have no physical possessions but still have the ability to be happy. Life is about relationships, so make the most of it.
@Kuebic The question is not whether you need money to be happy. I have still been happy, even though I've been so broke (mainly because of my precious computer and my place to live that I need to pay rent on). On the other hand, you also can't say "money equals happiness" because happiness cannot be measured as an integer for use in a math equation. But it is certainly true (for almost all people) that more money leads to more happiness.
@kdecius USA's GDP per capita is 5 times that of Costa Rica. So are the average American 5 times as happy as a Costa Rican? Well no. In fact Costa Rica is number one in having the most happy citizens in the world. A list that USA is merely number 20 on. Now I am from the country that is number 2 on that list, so I am doing ok.
@theiamania It's not very clever to assume a one to one ratio between financial wealth and happiness, and nobody is suggesting so. But simply graphing happiness against monetary wealth proves that there clearly is a positive correlation between the two. You'll be able to find outliers (not that I'm suggesting that the U.S. or Costa Rica are that), sure, but the correlation is still very positive.
@ChallengeDK We can also turn it around. If money means that you have more choices in life, then in fact there is a correlation between being rich and being unhappy :-) : watch?v=VO6XEQIsCoM
@theiamania You've got to help me on this one - how may one be more unhappy if presented with more choices than if not? The correlation has been statistically 'proved' using simple regression analyzes (at least macroeconomically speaking, but I'm sure studies exist on the microeconomics level as well).
@theiamania I just noticed you posted a video with your comment, which might explain your views on choice and unhappiness. I might get to watch it sometime :)
@kdecius It doesn't matter to me what you believe in. You are a human being and deserve that level of respect. Me wishing for your well being is a natural reaction from me. Please accept it with sincerity. Cheers
@Kuebic And I don't agree that life is about relationships. It's true that we are social creatures, much like many other mammals. But if anything, it's a survival mechanism left over from natural selection.
For billions of years, life was about staying alive and reproducing. Life for humans is now, on the most basic level, about seeking pleasure and avoiding pain. Relationships, like many other things, give us pleasure (and pain). So do drugs, so do video games, so does a career.
@kdecius Its a fair argument, but I am sorry you are wrong. But worse, not knowing that you are wrong, makes you most likely make decisions that make you more unhappy than you would otherwise be.
Simple question. Would it make your life more happy to win the lottery or to become parapalegic? watch?v=LTO_dZUvbJA
@YooryYoory well we don't enforce sex for happiness for several reasons. one, a person could use sex to as revenge or to alleviate feelings of lonlieness and anger.

Science confirms what we already know, the studies are just a means to explaining the obvious. My only problem is the basis for initiating the studies is that people these days don't think happiness is necessary. I know it might not be needed to live, but I still want it.
@dtadeo2006 Why? I have a company that employs 4 people, and the more I know about happiness the better I can make my employees work environment, and in turn their productivity and loyalty to my company. And at the same time I am using the science of happiness in making my products better. For me it is one of the most useful areas of science

MadiMoogle 1 year ago
@theiamania There is certainly a positive correlation between financial wealth and happiness. Many economic studies and common sense proves this - but a lot of other things factors in as well. Nevertheless, all things being equal, more wealth, more money means more happiness.
ChallengeDK 1 year ago
@ChallengeDK We are not as far from each other as the people that made me comment the first time :) but still. There is a correlation between being able to feed yourself and happiness. There is a correlation between how many friends you have and happiness. There is a correlation between having a purpose in life and happiness. In fact there is a garanti that you will be happy if you have those 3 things, but there is NON in having money. As I see it the correlation is insignificant.
theiamania 1 year ago
@theiamania I don't really think that there is a positive correlation between happiness and the quantity of friends. I could care less if I had 10 or 100 friends, as long as the friends I have are the real deal - as with so much else, it's about quality.
Other than that I tend to agree. Happiness is determined by an array of factors; even rich people can experience mid life crises - it's a matter of circumstance, but more money tend to never lead to less desirable outcomes; quite the contrary.
ChallengeDK 1 year ago
@ChallengeDK Totally with you on that. But fuck most people couldn't even say that they have 10 real friends.

Its a matter of being white and having a lot of money.
abobobobobo3 1 year ago
@queenbee8806 did u mean, at the end of your comment, that happiness does not increase further once the person has achieved that basic level of money that covers the amount of money to live comfortably?
upcycle 1 year ago
@upcycle He means that once you have what you need you make new goals for yourself that would make you happy.
Imagine you had no food. You are hungry. Now food will make you happy.
Now imagine you have just eaten. Food will most likely not make you happy anymore. However a bed might make you happy.
Point being that your goals change based on what you have or dont have.

Risingcash 1 year ago
@theiamania I would HIGHLY disagree. I quit my job 3 months ago and can't find another one no matter how hard I try. And being without money has been the most stressful time of my entire life. I clearly remember when I had a job, that I was always so excited and happy whenever I bought something new. Money DOES equal happiness. Prove me wrong.
kdecius 1 year ago
@kdecius I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble in life as am I. I'll be sure to send prayers your way.
Money does NOT equal happiness. Money does give you a sense of security, relieved stress, and thus allowed you to feel happier. But it was not money that gave you happiness, it was your relationships with others. Even if you have money and you could have anything you wanted but if you could not contact ANYONE at all (imagine walmart on a deserted island), you'll be one sad person. Cheers.
Kuebic 1 year ago
@Kuebic So you are saying it's not money itself that gives you happiness, but rather the things you buy with it.
In that case, we could go so far as to say it's not material objects or even personal relationships that give happiness, but the neurological processes they trigger. There's no end to it... your argument is invalid.
kdecius 1 year ago
@kdecius What? I believe that because I was forced to wrap things up due to character restriction I caused some confusion.
Let me clarify and be very blunt on it: you don't need money to be happy. You can be dirty cheap poor and still be happy. You can have no physical possessions but still have the ability to be happy. Life is about relationships, so make the most of it.
Kuebic 1 year ago
@Kuebic The question is not whether you need money to be happy. I have still been happy, even though I've been so broke (mainly because of my precious computer and my place to live that I need to pay rent on). On the other hand, you also can't say "money equals happiness" because happiness cannot be measured as an integer for use in a math equation. But it is certainly true (for almost all people) that more money leads to more happiness.
kdecius 1 year ago
@kdecius USA's GDP per capita is 5 times that of Costa Rica. So are the average American 5 times as happy as a Costa Rican? Well no. In fact Costa Rica is number one in having the most happy citizens in the world. A list that USA is merely number 20 on. Now I am from the country that is number 2 on that list, so I am doing ok.
theiamania 1 year ago
@theiamania It's not very clever to assume a one to one ratio between financial wealth and happiness, and nobody is suggesting so. But simply graphing happiness against monetary wealth proves that there clearly is a positive correlation between the two. You'll be able to find outliers (not that I'm suggesting that the U.S. or Costa Rica are that), sure, but the correlation is still very positive.
ChallengeDK 1 year ago
@ChallengeDK We can also turn it around. If money means that you have more choices in life, then in fact there is a correlation between being rich and being unhappy :-) : watch?v=VO6XEQIsCoM
theiamania 1 year ago
@theiamania You've got to help me on this one - how may one be more unhappy if presented with more choices than if not? The correlation has been statistically 'proved' using simple regression analyzes (at least macroeconomically speaking, but I'm sure studies exist on the microeconomics level as well).
ChallengeDK 1 year ago
@theiamania I just noticed you posted a video with your comment, which might explain your views on choice and unhappiness. I might get to watch it sometime :)

@Kuebic Oh, and don't bother praying... I am non-theistic.
kdecius 1 year ago
@kdecius It doesn't matter to me what you believe in. You are a human being and deserve that level of respect. Me wishing for your well being is a natural reaction from me. Please accept it with sincerity. Cheers
Kuebic 1 year ago
@Kuebic And I don't agree that life is about relationships. It's true that we are social creatures, much like many other mammals. But if anything, it's a survival mechanism left over from natural selection.
For billions of years, life was about staying alive and reproducing. Life for humans is now, on the most basic level, about seeking pleasure and avoiding pain. Relationships, like many other things, give us pleasure (and pain). So do drugs, so do video games, so does a career.
kdecius 1 year ago
@kdecius Its a fair argument, but I am sorry you are wrong. But worse, not knowing that you are wrong, makes you most likely make decisions that make you more unhappy than you would otherwise be.
Simple question. Would it make your life more happy to win the lottery or to become parapalegic? watch?v=LTO_dZUvbJA

Science confirms what we already know, the studies are just a means to explaining the obvious. My only problem is the basis for initiating the studies is that people these days don't think happiness is necessary. I know it might not be needed to live, but I still want it.

And at the same time I am using the science of happiness in making my products better. For me it is one of the most useful areas of science
