solution to squirrel...kill...cut into small peaces..soak in brine for 24 hours..boil until tender..rinse in cold water...put in milk to soak while you mix flour, salt, pepper...take squirrel out of milk and dip in flour mix then put in pan with 1/4 cup oil with lid for 20 min, then without lid another 10 ( to crisp). serve with rice and veggie...GOOD STUFF !!!

Red squirrels are pretty awesome and even though they aren't as common as greys in the UK they are quite common in Eur-asia.. I personally think that as long as there are some red squirrels in the world, all is not lost. And the money could be put to better use such as building homes for the homeless.. Or getting chavs off the streets..

I'm not sure how i feel about this, really. I mean, I personally think red squirrels are a lot prettier to have running around your town than grey ones, but that's simply because grey ones are the only squirrels i ever remember seeing. (I happen to be living in america, but also lived in russia, so i assume i saw some there) I don't think I'm very much in favor of spending a whole ton of money to repopulate the red squirrels when they're all over Eur-asia.

Well natural nature enviorment we have and enjoy today ie managed, there a few places which are purely natural. I beleive culling is the key, but it would have to be correctly managed, theres no good culling and then letting the greys rise up in numbers again.

it's not just about the reds, it's about the upsetting of a whole eco system. i remember when everyone was angry with Australia for culling Kangaroos, but i know when i was a cadet driving through army land it was just plain unsafe on the roads. people where going to get killed. i know this is different but in general i think the public get more angry when an animal gets culled than when humans do.
We manipulate everything already, through farming, cities, waste, etc . We should try and keep as much diversity as possible, it might be useful in the future =D I do however think there is an argument for the fact that there are more pressing issues!!
I think it's a good idea, culling is a bit misunderstood... There seems be an initial presumption that culling=death= inherently bad. But overall culling may result in less suffering (less starvation, disease).
It's naive, lazy and irresponsible to presume that it's just evolution and not to take into account the fact that we have had a massive effect on ecosystems and we can just pick and choose what to take responsibility for.

I'm a fan of squirrels in general. They're adorable. But that is a waste of money. I think this money could be put to better use. Culling is good for the species. We have culled mankind many a time and look at how prolific they grow. But seriously if the greys reproduce in greater numbers than the reds do then the greys will reach of plague proportions and then affect others in the eco system. The reds will only be the first to go. Control them now while you can.
i agree with you on this particular issue, but not as a whole. i think a lot of invasive species have started to ruin ecosystems around the world, take for instance, kudzu in the south east US, where i live. that vine can grown on anything and its indestructible. we need to find a way to get it back to japan, where it belongs, but nothing will eat it except goats. what are we south eastern americans supposed to do?

What other predators do the red squirrels have? If the grey squirrels are brought under control then the reds would have nothing to adapt to? They may need the greg squirrels so that the adaptation can take place and they can survive. Besides if you wanted to wipe out the grey squirrels you would have to wipe them out all at once or within months, it's like fighting a disease (like what happened with malaria in the UK) :) I was tired whilst typing this so if it makes no sense, tough ^_^
I agree that because the red squirrel is not globally endangered there is not a good enough reason to cull the grey squirrel. If the government is really concerned about these animals they may want to try a program that facilitates breeding and survival of red squirrels but ultimately they will have to admit that red squirrels will never reach the abundance they had before the introduction of the grey squirrel.

1st of all that scottish accent was damn cute lol.
but with the squirrels...if the red ones are native and grey ones not, then the red squirrel population diminishing should be a concern although it is common elsewhere.
also if the grey squirrels are bigger and stronger etc. then the population will grow again if they do cull them, but if they dont cull them itll just continue to gorw till the red squirrel dies out...

solution to squirrel...kill...cut into small peaces..soak in brine for 24 hours..boil until tender..rinse in cold water...put in milk to soak while you mix flour, salt, pepper...take squirrel out of milk and dip in flour mix then put in pan with 1/4 cup oil with lid for 20 min, then without lid another 10 ( to crisp). serve with rice and veggie...GOOD STUFF !!!

Red squirrels are pretty awesome and even though they aren't as common as greys in the UK they are quite common in Eur-asia.. I personally think that as long as there are some red squirrels in the world, all is not lost. And the money could be put to better use such as building homes for the homeless.. Or getting chavs off the streets..

i'm looking at this from across the pond, but i think that the public is right and that the red squirrels are fine. do you know where black squirrels fit into any of this? in northeast america i see them every so often but they are pretty rare and maybe they will need saving soon...

I agree, especially as there are other methods to help red squirrels e.g feeding platform that only let the red ones on. Culling the greys seems a bit harsh. BTW, your 'Scottish' accent sounded a little Newcastle-ish at times!

I'm not sure how i feel about this, really. I mean, I personally think red squirrels are a lot prettier to have running around your town than grey ones, but that's simply because grey ones are the only squirrels i ever remember seeing. (I happen to be living in america, but also lived in russia, so i assume i saw some there) I don't think I'm very much in favor of spending a whole ton of money to repopulate the red squirrels when they're all over Eur-asia.

I think that because there are plenty of Red Squirrels in the world that theres no need to kill the Gray ones. If it was really important that Great Britain had Red Squirrels then couldn't they breed some in captivity? Or find a different place to send the gray ones? Just a thought.

Well natural nature enviorment we have and enjoy today ie managed, there a few places which are purely natural. I beleive culling is the key, but it would have to be correctly managed, theres no good culling and then letting the greys rise up in numbers again.
I think its important to see which place the grey squirrel holds in the food chain, as it could effect the status in which the areas that are greatly effected by them.

I have a question, and if the answer was in your link and I missed it while reading it over I do apologize, but how do they plan to kill the Grey Squirrels? Wouldn't anything they used to try and stop them effect Red Squirrels too? Or if they are going to individually seek out Grey Squirrels to trap and euthanize, wouldn't it be much more human to contain them and ship them back to their land of origin? I'm usually pretty against invader species (we have a problem where I live involving marine critters) but only if they are truly endangering the native species. As you've said, the red squirrels live in loads of other places and while yes, it would be sad to have them gone from Britain, it wouldn't be the complete end of them.

it's not just about the reds, it's about the upsetting of a whole eco system. i remember when everyone was angry with Australia for culling Kangaroos, but i know when i was a cadet driving through army land it was just plain unsafe on the roads. people where going to get killed. i know this is different but in general i think the public get more angry when an animal gets culled than when humans do.

I think it's a good idea, culling is a bit misunderstood... There seems be an initial presumption that culling=death= inherently bad. But overall culling may result in less suffering (less starvation, disease).
It's naive, lazy and irresponsible to presume that it's just evolution and not to take into account the fact that we have had a massive effect on ecosystems and we can just pick and choose what to take responsibility for.

You can have our boring brownish gray squirrels we have in the states if you want them. Oh we have recently had a a bunch of black ones too. The brown ones are all named Ralph and the black ones Steve. Well for me anyways....

I'm a fan of squirrels in general. They're adorable. But that is a waste of money. I think this money could be put to better use. We could use it to buy food for starving people, help the homeless, or it could be used to help a species which is actually, in a global sense, critically endangered (If you go on wikipedia there is an entire list or you could go for the old favorites panda, polar bear, or mountain gorilla?) In a time of economic crisis squirrels should be as listed... Least concern.

Is this being paid for with tax money, or personal donations? If tax money I think it's pretty ridiculous. Personal/group financing however would make it slightly less ridiculous.
I remember seeing a news segment with some guy walking around with a shotgun talking about the gray squirrels were using military tactics. I thought the idea was fairly crazy then(probably because of the representative).
It could definitely be worse however. Rabbits in Australia anyone? Oh and feral cats.

Culling is good for the species. We have culled mankind many a time and look at how prolific they grow. But seriously if the greys reproduce in greater numbers than the reds do then the greys will reach of plague proportions and then affect others in the eco system. The reds will only be the first to go. Control them now while you can.

i agree with you on this particular issue, but not as a whole. i think a lot of invasive species have started to ruin ecosystems around the world, take for instance, kudzu in the south east US, where i live. that vine can grown on anything and its indestructible. we need to find a way to get it back to japan, where it belongs, but nothing will eat it except goats. what are we south eastern americans supposed to do?

What other predators do the red squirrels have? If the grey squirrels are brought under control then the reds would have nothing to adapt to? They may need the greg squirrels so that the adaptation can take place and they can survive. Besides if you wanted to wipe out the grey squirrels you would have to wipe them out all at once or within months, it's like fighting a disease (like what happened with malaria in the UK) :) I was tired whilst typing this so if it makes no sense, tough ^_^

I agree that because the red squirrel is not globally endangered there is not a good enough reason to cull the grey squirrel. If the government is really concerned about these animals they may want to try a program that facilitates breeding and survival of red squirrels but ultimately they will have to admit that red squirrels will never reach the abundance they had before the introduction of the grey squirrel.

Personally, I wasn't even aware that red squirells were the ones that were native to England and not the grey ones. So keeping that in mind it does sort of need to be done, BUT it is very true that considering they are all over the world it really isn't tha important and they could be doing other more important things. I guess if it isn't a big task then to be honest i could go either way, but if it is then freaking stop it NOW, there are more pressing issues!

Well, although I understand the reasoning behind killing the squirrels I disagree with doing it. It's awful that the red squirrels are endangered (not even endangered because it's only the one place) but to actually kill another species for the sake of one? That's ridiculous! I don't believe in killing any animals unless it is absolutely necessary and I don't believe this is necessary. I agree with you Jazza.

I think I think it is okay so long as the meat is being used, sold to the public for meat or similar.
(They have tried introducing the meat to the public, however people seem to be scared of eating new meats, so the volume of sale was low)
Killing to eat the meat would help justify the culling.. it would be the same as people eat chicken or fish and only free range, whilst helping out our reds.
But still, in all a pretty nasty activity.
Perhaps humans just need to stop interfering..
