You should put ***SPOILER ALERT*** in the description, since you are showing the END of the movie here. Not that it's a problem for me, I've seen this movie like 10 times :D
This is one of the all time great movies of the past 30 years, that really doesn't get the recognition that it deserves. The last 30 minutes of this movie are some of the most dramatic, intense scenes you'll ever see.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Tw4tz0r exactly South Africa was a beautiful country, but let the negros loose and the place becomes a banana state. Its well known negros are intellectually inferior, but no one can stand the truth without being labelled a racist
@Deltastrike81 You are a racist and staggeringly ignorant of history, to boot. If you took even five minutes to peruse the history of colonial oppression and subversion in African affairs, you wouldn't bother to open your silly trap with such inanities.
Captain Ramsey realized that he is no longer a capable military commander. He nearly started a nuclear war by deciding to launch nuclear missiles without proper authorization. Hunter is correct in his decision to defy his orders and tries to get the complete second message. Ramsey reliefs himselves of command and heads to his quarters.
@Mikex87 No racist coment there.. they are just continuing their aguments about horses (as previously seen in other scenes of the movie).. and the scene continues in the last dialog line from the movie where Ramsey concedes to Hunter that they are from Spain
This was a bullshit scene stuck in by LIBERALS and the scene had NOTHING to do with the movie and was COMPLETELY uncalled for and unnecessary to the story line.
@dnewhomeboy45 from the beginning of the movie if you would pay attention. hackman asks him at the beginning what does he like to do, and he answers he likes to ride horses...........
the nervous radio kid is played by the same "kid" that played Robert Deniro's Son in "A Bronx Tale". i'm a musician. once, around 2001, a band i was working in was playing the Alladin in Las Vegas. on a break sitting at a table near the stage, a group of guys walked in. sat down a couple tables over. it was "this kid" right here in the movie. i tried to subtely motion to my fellow bandmates, "hey, that's the dude from Bronx Tale!". Lol! hopefully, i didn't become a goofball
Great movie, glad I have it in my collection. It's billed as an action movie, but really it's more of a thinking exercise. Neither one of these two was right, and neither was wrong. There is no bad guy, just different ways of looking at a very serious situation with world ending repercussions......impressive acting from everyone in this movie.
I like the horsey bit--does it mean some ppl are born to follow orders while others are born to question? Hackman maybe a SOB in this movie but he did played a great role in Uncommon Valor--his speech about the government not taking responsible action to get MIAs out of Vietnam after the war and reasoned why his character and Robert Stack's character undertook the initiative to save their own sons was really touching. A great action pack war flick also starred the late P. Swayze, and Fred Ward.
love how the idiots interpret this scene as a racial undertone. Its not a battle between black and white, its a battle between old school and new school. Aggression Vs Patience, Soldier vs. Academic
The best part of this movie is how Gene Hackman excepts defeat in the end. Classy move by a man who was sure he was right but willing to except he was wrong.
@whatsgoingon07 I don't think so. I think the commander was testing the Executive officers knowledge of things unrelated to the Navy. It was a good moment to ask because it was kind of a 3 minute of window of nothing else to do. But I don't think the captain expected DW's answer, he underestimates his ability.
@dandyjesus ..The both absolutely thought they were correct about which direction to take this crisis, and were told that by their commander....but they were both wrong about the horse...right to the end.
The lipizzaner stallions, as the Spaniard-Norman, the mustangs, the aztecs, the frisions, etc, has blood of the Spanish horses (the Andalusians), there they have its genetics, so you don't say foolishness on that the lippizaners are from Eslovenia. Nor of far, my friend. Nor of far
@LordMalice6d9 ..You don't know would happen if a captain and XO of a sub were put in this position. This is why at the end of the movie, they answer for the situation in Washington..and the captain gracefully retires.
@LordMalice6d9 I take it you haven't seen the actual movie as there is a fullblown mutiny in progress between the CO and XO... When you've already showed a 12 gauge in the face of crewmembers, striking one seems kind of mild in comparison...
Lillo Brancato Jr., who played Russell Voslar, was the best in this movie. Even though we don't get to see him a lot, Lillo's character was very important. It was great to see him be a part of this classic, intense, suspense thriller.
you were right about the horses....they are from Spain....best "neutral" ending to a movie ever. No matter who u rooted for, they ended it as gentlemen.
The only thing controlling the launch of nuclear missles is the permission--or refusal--of the president to the captain, to do so. The captain, of course, knows the codes and the location(s) of those codes. That's WHY he's the captain. Movies are movies, and reality is reality. God bless the American Navy, and the people who serve in it.
Probably this movie was all about one thing, to think twice, to use your mind and your heart before making any decision that invloves the lives of others, and to know that you're not the only one in the universe, and that there are others in this world who may forever suffer the consequences of a one bad decision that you once made just because you thought that it's not your fault...
@ojideagu LOL, your comment is on point. You have to realize the fact, that Hackman is an old naval dude, with too many years under his metals. The last thing he needs, with all of his accomplishments, is a young snot, questioning his judgement. "Right or Wrong", you don't question your superiors, was how Hackman saw things. Denzel tried not to over step, his bounds. He proceeded, with his advice cautiously, but in the end, had to act on better judgement, which cost him a slap in the face. lol
@METrades Damn I missed your reply 2 months ago lol yeh you are exactly right. That's when people in power fuck up, they can't see the wood for the tree's because of their authority.

Holy crap!!! Denzel @ 1:22 looks EXACTLY like a guy who just got punched in the face who could, YET! Won't do anything about it because he's trying as hard as f-ing possible to be the "stronger man"! I've seen that before! Prestine Acting, beyond belief!!! Wow!!!
@METrades What amazes me is Gene Hackman would rather be right and have a Nuclear war that would wipe out a large chunk of mankind then be wrong. How the fuck could you be dissapointed that you don't have to fire? I'd be doing a fucking Irish Jig. That's what you call an EGO beyond belief.
Ojideagu , I know your comment is 2 months old, but you bring up a good point. It IS ego. The captain came from a time where officers followed orders and didn't ask questions, and he says as much in the dinner scene talking about (Adm) Rickover and his first command.
@Haywerth Yeh no problem! This even happens with Surgeons. A surgeon recently took out the wrong kidney and killed a man. But surgeons are so arrogant that his staff and assistant surgeons were too scared to tell him at the time that he was taking out the wrong kidney, even the knowledge that it would kill the man was not enough to make them speak up and tell him he was wrong.
It's like Jason Robards said at the Board of Inquiry - "Insofar as the letter of the law is concerned, you were BOTH RIGHT. And, you were also BOTH WRONG!"
@SSJSasuke777 In a previous scene, while GH attempted to launch nuclear missles, DW removed a necessary firing key preventing nuclear missles from launching. Since GH is the Captain and DW is the Exec Officer the two cannot work without the other. The radio being inoperative, the EAM being incomplete, it allows the audience to review the ethics of following orders under chain of command, ethics of launching nuclear weapons under false assumptions, and dealing with underlying biased views.
Well Yeah I Know That Denzel Took the Key and hackmen wants it back bcause hes a commanding Officer and denzel has to do whats right but Why Were they willing to launch the missiles in the first place what action did the russians do
