With all apologies if anyone's toes are stepped on, here is an audio re-mix for greater understandability. It may be too loud. Some whistle-ey artifacts, but the best I could do... go to soundcloud.... plutopeteoberlinsukha/u-utah-phillips-001-world
Utah Phillips featured in an old BBC documentary (which I still watch on a grainy old VHS tape) about Lens'a Cafe of blessed memory, with so many other great singers and social commentators, no longer with us. Great man and great commentator, perhaps his successor is Seasick Steve tho a slightly different take on life.
As much as you can tell that this man has sincerity I don't think he has the venom to carry off this song, Dick Gaughan on the other hand does a ferocious version of this song which really does the lyrics justice , None better!
Peter Maurin (France 1877 - USA 1949), christian anarchist activist who co-founded the Catholic Worker Movement, believed the Catholic Worker should stress life in small agricultural communities, as 'there is no unemployment on the land. When business is based on selfishness, everybody is busy becoming more selfish. Everybody would be rich if nobody tried to become richer.' Notice the Vatican Popes on the contrary are as christian as the greedy Italian Maffia Godfathers. Now Bless Utah 'ere :-)
@Chaffinch4 There is a statue of Oliver Cromwell outside The Houses of Parliament for good reason, he won battles against the autocrats. If it were not for him and people like Gerard Winstanley, John Lillburne, Richard Overton or William Prynne, the people would not have won the civil war and there would be no democracy. Read your history!
@0ldb1ll History is not the product of individuals. The New Model Army was originally a coalition of different groups. Once they'd won, Cromwell turned on those he didn't agree with - the Diggers, the Levellers and then turned to Ireland and massacred thousands. The "democracy" that followed was the control of the bourgeoisie of parliament, proved when they installed William of Orange. True democratic movements in the UK followed the lead of the Diggers - the Luddites, the Chartists.
yeah! great message, great singing...utah phillips tells us (amazing) things we are not told by others who are entertaining us...thank you thank you thank you.

Impressively passionate man...... restores your faith in the possibility that The Staes ain't all George W.
First came across him by buying an album he did with Ani di Franco which turned out to be more him than her. Great performer.

In 1649 to St. George's Hill,
a ragged band they called the Diggers came
to show the people's will.
They defied the landlords
They defied the laws.
They were the dispossessed reclaiming
what was theirs.

The last time I talked to Bruce I told him I was in no hurry for him to be my hero.
Now he is and that shall ever be a source of great sadness to me.
Go to sleep you weary hobo; and I shall join you there one day.

seems like he left us some songs to learn and pass on

There never will be another like Utah Phillips; his songs and stories made us laugh, made us cry, brought many a chill to our spines.
His life honored us, and his pasing has left a void that can never, and will never be filled.
He made this world a better place. And we thank the heavens that we were blessed just to know him.
With love and our utmost respect, rest in peace, Fellow Worker.
As another fella named Bruce once said, "When they built you brother, they broke the mold."

Utah was a great singer. He sang like a worker. And there are a lot of millionaire "pop" song types that sing far worse.
You have a lot of hatred in your soul, and I think some self-loathing too. Utah never did anything to you, and the rich never did anything FOR you.

I agree. This is a load of shit, and I couldn't care less about "millionaire 'pop' songs."
