Phoenix was actually Lenna's dragon Hiryuu in FF5, when it gave the last of it's power to transform into an Esper (summon), it was very helpful afterwards, especially while fighting powerful bosses like Azulmagia and Exdeath, or enemies like Hades, but it requires 99 MP to be summoned WOOT, but not too much for it's advantages in my opinion.
I have to say my favourite version has to be FFVIII's Summons. I love the fact that--once you summon the Phoenix--it will come out if the entire party is dead although it's a rarity it is useful.
i thought you use it like a revive item.. but phoenix actually activates itself when all of your characters died at the same time. I had experienced that when i'm fighting omega weapon and all my characters died with the terra break.
Final Fantasy XII screws up once again and mutilates some of the best things in the previous games. Phoenix was one of the best summons by far.
However. I will add you didn't seem to even mention the times where Phoenix would automatically summon itself should your entire party die. Which I know happened in VIII at least. xP

actually in FF8 when all 3 of ur char. die the phoenix automatcially summon's itself without call and revives ur whole intire party back to full health.
There's a cutscene after the omega/utima fight where tenzen seems to summon phoenix from his sword, but all you see if a bunch of fire. Dunno if that counts.
VIII and IX had the coolest-looking versions. The fire outline! Good god, the fire outline!
Also, Vaan's victory pose was... interesting.

i don't really like 5's phoenix. it only revive one of the ally. if u nearly wiped out, then it will be such a big problem.

yup for me it was FF8 cause I hadn't prepared for the number of battles the final battle was and Pheonix just kept coming

Actually, in FFXI, you see fire and feathers fly around. Not just her, and it isn't Phoenix, it's her soul... complicated storyline :P
She sacrifices the part of the soul in his katana to save you from bahamut.
