The NARAS claims the main criteria is quality of the music but it's obvious that the commercial factor have always been an influence and I understand them to a certain degree because they include so many different genres of music and at the same time are trying to keep the popularity and the commercial success of the show. This is also the reason why they radically cut down the number of categories and we see what has this led to.

@steinblood First of all. I don't think White Limo is a Metal Song, the Grammy they won at this song was Hard Rock / Metal Performance , the slash in the middle means that can be a Hard rock performance or a Metal Performance, I believe the song in question belongs in the first one.

@steinblood on the other hand on metal bands failing as a music product, they are, cause the grammy are gived to ones that had comercial success , they have failed at that, they have also failed on making music that get in to the public in a massive way like they have do in the past (80's), that being said, at least for me, Metal has become over the years in an accumulation of technic evolution on the instruments played, but with a lack of ideas and feelings that i think are important on music.

It is important to realize that its not the best music that actually win such awards. It's the "catchy" songs, songs that are easy to listen to without giving it too much thought.

Let's face it guys.
Foo Fighters were the only ones who deserved the award. Dream Theater? One of the worst Progressive Metal bands to ever exist. Mastodon? Hipster trash. Megadeth? Haven't been relevant since Dave got off the drugs, got into God, and Megadeth started sucking after Rust in Peace.
And lol Sum 41. Given the choices, this song is the only viable pick, even if Foo Fighters will never be better than Megadeth were in their prime.

@ThazuaBlackarrow Couldn't agree more, Megadeth has to be one of my favorite thrash metal bands of all time, but that is because of their first 4 albums, amazing songwriting and riffs. 13 Was terrible and I'm glad it lost, even though I couldn't care less for awards.
If it was up to me, Outer Isolation by Vektor would have won that award, but who cares, obviously not Vektor lol. All they care about is releasing an even better album in 2013..

Metallica died with Cliff. Even then, their last good album was Ride the Lightning.
But you're right. They don't have a very good taste in Metal, or else they would have picked some good bands this year around. Not Dream Theater and Mastodon. Commercial Metal is all they recognize. Hell's "Human Remains" shits all over everything nominated.
