  • Guinea Pigs Rule. Great show and post.

  • I am a fan of the british show Red dwarf and decided to look this up because it was mentioned in one of the shows, ("tales of the riverbank the fifth generation" lol. And they talk about how hammy was a diva lol) Now watching this i remember that this was part of "Pinwheel" a childerns show here in the US that was the original show for what is now Nickolodean, or as its now called Nick. I loved this show so thank you for uploading these and please keep em coming.

  • This was so low budget but as a child of 10 we thought the show was so grand and now at49 I still think about this amazing show.

  • I love this show, Still have it on VHS

  • This is a very charming t.v. show. I seem to remember something similar in this country ( U.S.-)

I think it may have been called 'Hamster', does that sound familiar to anyone here?- Any way, best regards from United States, keep posting:)

  • hammy was cute after the 3rd picture

  • how cute is this!

  • hahahahahaha

  • Tales of the riverbank an absolute gem. Johnny Morris loved all animals.

  • this tune.....just makes me want to curl up on the sofa, with Mr Bear and a cup of hot milk, Mum's voice drifting through from the kitchen....rain pattering on the window, warm and safe, not a care in the world, about five years old. Why do we have to grow up.

  • love the tune- this was a big part of my day back then- xxx

  • my hamster poos

  • You never see the hamsters poo.

  • goodness I remember this makes me feel really old and they were so harmless

  • I used to borrow videos with episodes of this on from the library all the time as a child. I loved it.

  • cute

  • Thank you Mikeat for your response. The only problem with nostalgia is it shows our age!

  • The modern version to this is that show Creature comforts?

  • God I loved this! I grew up on the banks of a sleepy country river so it was a perfect fit.

  • Who said that vermin could not be members of Equity, dear boy.

  • I loved Hammy Hamster. Brings back so many happy memories

  • 2:40 Oh,shoot yourself!

This is just my favourite. This is amazing.

  • Oh gosh! Hammy Hamster!! <3 My brother used to love this when he was younger! My mom would get up every morning at 5:30 to record it off the Starz station. It used to come on like 2 days a week back then. I wish I knew what happened to all those episodes... Its great to see it again!

  • If I was a kid and watching this I would think this was so cute, I'm older now and all I can think is animal abuse :P especially thinking about how they got that hat on the little guy...

  • Oh thank you, I remembered this show in my head from 0ver 38yrs ago and never new what is was called, and noone has known what I was talking about. x

  • can anyone help. Iam trying to find you tube clips of a TV programme from the same ers as tales of the riverbank, yes I am 50+!

It was American andI thought it was The Piped Piper but nothing comes up. I remember the theme lyric.

    Come with me

    Come and see

    All my stories

    All my songs

All my pictureyou can see and everything there's plenty of ( sounds quite dodgy these days!

    Cheers

  • @cbcb102

Think it might be the 1960's Canadian show Mr Piper you're looking for

a few cartoons here on youtube

  • @cbcb102

how weird, I was jsut about to post the same question. I seem to remember that 'Tales of the Riverbank' was part of it, and a chap used to say something like 'and lets see whats happening down on the riverbank' and would make a big thing of pointing down to a mousehole. 'Come with me come with me, all the wonders you will see'...;)

  • @cbcb102 .I've being looking too.As I recall there was a segment where there was a story about 3 large dogs that had a horde of gold and silver..its a long time ago,but enchanting is the term I'd use.The Piped Piper as

I recall was a rodund chap, and dressed in short trousers with braces.I loved it and want to show my own kids what entertained me as a nipper.

  • I haven't seen one of these since I was a wee tacker. Cor, it takes me back. I had a hamster named after him, like about ten million other Brit kids at the time.

  • i loved this as a kid, this and pogles wood, and of course hectors house, the animal rights nutters would have a field day with this now

  • Better than G-Force!

  • Aawww I used to watch this when I was like 6yrs and I don't remember hammy being that frickin adorable!!! -_-

  • Growing up in Michigan, right accross the river from Ontario (in the days before cable), I used to watch this, the Secret Railroad, and Barbapapas! I loved Hammy Hamster, but someone in my adult mind I remembered G.P. sounding like W.C. Fields for some reason. Either way, it's great to see this again. I wish it were available on DVD.

  • Yup, I remember this very well & can remember the theme tune at the drop of a hat!

There was a different show each day of the week, including the Woodentops, Andy Pandy & Bill & Ben ................ but what was the 5th one?

  • @Ptarmi Probably Sooty, with Harry Corbett?

  • I absolutely love this, and used to watch it as a child in England!! Is it available on DVD at all? My children need this one {at least I do . . . . } ha ha.

  • wow i used to watch this. shocking.

  • why cant they use animations instead of animals

  • @dim432 because real animals are alot more appealing to children than animations :)

  • @dim432 I hate animations!

  • omg i remember this! love it!

  • Genius. I remember having cassettes of this when i was a kid and loving it to pieces :) Loved Hammy! God, this thing is better than the shizz that passes on Disney Channel nowadays!

  • I watched this when I was little, my dad had the tape of it.

  • Where did you find this? I didn't think any of TOTRB existed.

  • Woke up sceaming one night about Hammy The Hampster. Bad nightmare.Nice to see this though after 40odd years.(or is it 50)

  • Tales Of The Riverbank-The Next Generation!

  • Good child hood memories !! thank you for the post <3

  • My Life is now Complete! Haha I loved this show as a kid, but for some reason none of my friends remember it, and they tell me I dreamt it!

  • @exploitsarcher They all laughed atchya! Well look who's laughin' now!

  • Say "Hamster" now and everyone thinks of Richard Hammond this one was the original!! (both cute though)

  • WTF HOW YOU TEACHED THEM TALKING???

  • fantastic - forgot about this show...

  • When was this show on. Was on in US? I don't remember this show but its the cutest animal show ever. Love animal shows like that!!!!

  • Thank you. That was my favourite programme!

  • hammy is so cute!

  • what the hell!

  • I remember Hammy Hamster so well from my childhood, back in 1974, I used to watch this! God it makes me feel old!

  • PETA would probably try and ban this today.

It was brilliant and I loved it!

  • Vermin.... Fawlty?

  • WOW i luv this. it is amazing!!

  • ho ho ho what a lot of nonsense! Its not a nesting box! Its a camera!

  • Rat Actor 1: I started the Black Death actually.

Rat Actor 2: Bloody good show old chap.

  • Holy crap ^^ i love this show as a kid !! Me gusta mucho!!

  • Is it true Hammy received a Grammy for this?! :) Thanks for sharing! I used to love this show as a kid! I think I even remember this episode...but not the accents.

  • I thought this was in black and white XD thats the only copy my mummy showed me anyway :P its an awesome show !

    xxx

  • @MrsPygmypuff20 - the original Tales were in black and white, made in 1960, these tales are shorter episodes made years later, in colour. Still good though doncha think?

  • @EmeraldGemstar09

hehe yeah these are pretty awesome to XD xx

  • I've just realized, Hammy looks like mine and my sister's hampster Cameron!

  • I grew up with this show - we had a copy on video! I used to watch it over and over again! Thanks for uploading!

  • i had no idea this was a real show...lmao hilarious

  • poor hammy and roderick lol

  • I remember this show from the early 60s when it was in black and white. I seem to remember a little boat they put a mouse in and then floated down the stream or something like that. So long ago its hard to remember. I love the correct British accents maybe this and the great productions is why I've always loved Masterpiece Theatre so much. Anyway Thanks for reminding me of my youth and a much simpler time.

  • Jesus!

  • who has put this on your the best I loved this still have the video cool :)

  • They used to put peanut butter on everything the rat was around to stop him eating hammy and GP!!! hahah

  • @chrissycrofty

Lol, rats dont eat hamsters or guinea pigs. I have rescued many, many rats and I have four right now and they get along really well with my bunnies.. Domestic, well-fed rats wouldn't eat another animal.

  • The original title of this classic series was: Tales of Various Rodents

  • No not at all.

  • Yeah I like making stuff up too. All propaganda.

  • Haha luckily I dont think thats true so yeah haha.. my friend made it up :( x

  • THIS WAS THE BEST SHOW EVER.

  • last of the summer wine was based on this.

  • What is the theme music called? I have wanted to know for over 40 years?

  • The Tales of the Riverbank Theme Music is called 'Andante in C' by Giuliani

Do a Google search for 'Tales of the Riverbank Theme Music Andante in C by Giuliani mp3', and you'll find the free sheet music, and a link to a free MP3.

  • Loads better than that crummy recent movie they made with some kind of pathetically stuffed creatures-an absolute affront to the original!!!

  • It wasn't American, it was Canadian. CBC made it.

  • haha same my hampsters called hammy

  • say "hamster" now and everyone thinks of Richard Hammond, this was the original one. (both cute though) happy memories of Watch with Mother

  • i used to watch this when i was little! i even named my hamster hammy haha

  • hee hee hee. Love the voices.

  • Dude I wathed this when I was little .....Amazing what kept our attention back then

  • aww.. it looks for cute.. the mans voice is soo boring though

  • what year is this from?

i remember watching the original B/W stuff from the early 70s!

  • thanks for putting this on. i used to watch this as a kid. great stuff.

  • someone call the rspca!

  • Classic series. :)

  • Does anyone else remember the 70's/80's version with Matty Mouse and grandma turtle with her general store?

  • Well, not sure how it ever changed so much, but the 70's/80's version I remember had Shelly Turtle running the Post Office, and Miss Much (a mouse) running the General Store.

  • Oh memories! used to love this

  • how come Hammy hamster sounds like Benny off Crossroads?

  • I am not absoltuely certain but I believe that Hammy is the same chap that does Benny!

  • wow, its so cute.

  • These videos are fantastic. Hammy is at his best during these timeless shows. I feel sorry about Hammy's later slide into alcoholism and drug abuse as a result of his fame which ultimately led to his untimely demise aged only 2. We all miss his little furry face. RIP.

  • This is the most charming kiddies TV series ever, despite what people might think about the programme being cruel using real animal 'actors' i reckon the animals loved taking part in the filming and getting to mess around in all the cleverly designed sets / toys etc. Apparently there is going to be a new DVD feature film coming out in 2008! I cant wait to see it!

  • If anyone has the Canadian version, I'd love to see it. GP had the funniest voice, like a 1920s gangster, where he'd say 'seeeee?...' at the end of his sentences. Loved that!

  • A lovely program. I loved it.

  • Love It! The Legend of Johnny Morris Lives on.

  • I used to watch the newer version of this. :D Tis brings back so many memories

  • Oh my good old google. Been wondering what this show was called. New had to do with hamsters and ariverbank. Always remember them going down river in little motorboats

  • gp lol brings back memeries

  • hammy was such a cute little thing :)

  • amazing show haha

dad n me used to watch this as a kid when i was 4 about 13 years ago i love it

  • The Canadian version was the original (Roderick Rat???). These voices are awful, not all terrific! TERRIFIC!

Tthis is about as exciting as an episode of Coronation street that's all Blanche and Norris

  • It was Matty Mouse!!

i thought I had false childhood memories, I loved the Canadian version...

the best part was at the end when the narrator would say "but that is a part of a different story"

Actually... I think an all Blanche and Norris Ep would be hilarious

  • Don't think much of the narrator's voice. My favourite was the man with the much softer, gentler voice that was distinctly Canadian. This european guy kind of blows.

  • Blasphemy! Johnny Morris was the man! Generations grew up watching JM on the box.

  • Johnny Morris could speak animal!

  • Johnny Morris was a legend... you know not what you say : )

  • IM t first to comment, awesome! thanks so much dude, this show rocks. hammy for life.
