Why is everyone talking about Michael Bay all the time when they think about this movie? I would want to give a handshake to Jerry Bruckheimer instead cause he weren't the most famous person before this movie but he have truly made a awesome job since he worked on this movie. And he did a awesome job in this movie.Yeah he did some awesome movies before this to, like Top Gun, But as everyone else i have to say that this is a truly amazing movie intro.
Spitzer72 is telling the truth. Read about Smedley Butler, the most highly decorated Marine, and what he says about war and military industrial complex. Probably a few grades above your comic-book level comprehension skills, but well worth it.
@spitzer72 you should probably get your facts straight whoever you are. There are still plenty of people in the US that aren't obessed with themselves and material. They still value honor. so be careful throwin around comments like that and making generalizations.
@spitzer72 Don't believe everything you hear. And even if you are right, it's attitudes like that that cause the same problems to exist. Its up to good people to understand problems and stand up to correct them.
What the f*ck. 53 people have given a thumbs up to this bullshit comment. Have you forgotten WW II ? Hundreds of millions of people owe their lives (and their freedom) to the soldiers of the US Army. And yes they all care. You must be a fan of tiranny or terrorism to give a comment like that. A freedom war is what keeps morons like you safe. So that you can pick your nose, and write bullshit, like you did here.
@zidaneee12345 because he's a terrible filmmaker... he used to rely on talented people to help him makes films like this... and the success of those movie made him think he's good so now he just relies on his own judgement which is crap
maybe - but u can't hate on people that choose to serve - knowing they aren't in full control anymore if any...thats why its an incredible sacrifice...and no they just don't make movies like this anymore.
@runeman1996 In the story he was a vietnam vet. This can't be iraq because they would be able to get them. If it is a black operation like this where they are not supposed to be there I could only guess it would be like china, north korea, or cuba. The place did not matter but the event did.
@honchoryanc He is angered by the fact that his men were abandoned by his commanders in Desert Storm which he goes into detail on in that scene where he talks with the different commanders in the Pentagon. He is a career officer who fought in both Vietnam and the first war in Iraq. The actions he took in this movie had absolutely nothing to do with Vietnam.
@Jamoshotz8321 they have everything to do with vietnam if you ask yourself why his men got abandoned. People high up in the chain, politicians and whatnot, make decisions based on politics and young men get killed for it, and their sacrifice isn't appreciated for other political reasons...a lot of that happened in vietnam... it happens in every war.... war is young men dying and old men talking
@jim0watkins The movie is not based off revenge for what happened in Vietnam. If you don't believe me, watch the movie and pay attention in the scene where General Hummel speaks about the terms of the ransom he wants with the people at the pentagon. He goes into detail about what happened to a bunch of his men during an operation in Desert Storm. Sure, like any General he's fought in more than one war and probably bitter from everything, but that is neither here nor there during the film.
This was a pretty good movie... with a bit of rewriting and toning down some of the goofy over the top action scenes, it would have been a great movie.
@spitzer72 While there are people that profit from wars in the United States, All members of her armed forces are appeciated for what they do every day by REAL Americans. Wars will always be fought, some for good reasons, some for bad,but these men and women deverve the highest honor for what they do every day.
@brethomuel786 "Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse" Enough said...about both men and women you mention.
This is a great movie, and a great scene.A very powerful message to all you Americans who still idealize your government and army...Honor and US Army don't belong in a same sentence so don't even try to go there, because you don't have an argument. Enjoy music, great scene and one of the best actors today...
@Testosteron250 So you are blaming an entire organization for the actions of a few in comparison. Do you blame all Americans for slavery? All Germans for Hitler and his actions? All the Cambodians for what the Khmer Rouge did? Your argument is shortsighted beyond belief and overly simplistic., The United States of America is a great nation and her armed forces are to be respected by all U.S. citizens.
I doubt you know anyone who is related to someone KIA/WIA. Your "highest honor" does nothing! It won't give back life. It won't give back a leg lost. It won't pay for medical treatment. Honor including medals and stuff like that is an artificial construct made by politicans to keep narrow-minded flag waving voters in the line while Hans Zimmer's heart-wrenching soundtrack is played in the background. I feel sorry for those who can't go to college and enlist instead... fall guys.
@1poiuztrewq2 Are you responding to something I said earlier? You are correct about medals and ribbons not meaning much by themselves. They are a symbol of what actions were taken at a certain point in time. I am not saying they make all wounds gained during such acts disappear. Many wounds are forever. But my point below was about respect.
They just don't make them like they used too :( Who on here can name a superb action film that came out in the last few years? NONE! I certainly can't even pick one.. ALL complete Crap now days... 90s rocked
@thebayareapimp I agree. I would be willing to say "Black Hawk Down" is a decent action film - but that was 9 years ago. "Saving Private Ryan" is one of my favorites - right up there with "The Rock".
@HIghBlutdruck you can appreciate black hawk down and saving private ryan, but not in the same way as the Rock. They were true accounts of horrible battles and real lives lost, not to be taken as action films.
Too much CGI,the young action directors like Len Wiseman suck donkey balls and we got wussies like Shia LaBeouf instead of badasses like Schwarzenegger.
The Dutch government is closing at least 1 army base( maybe a 2nd and an airbase) cuts 12000 jobs, 17 jets, 4 minesweapers and our only tank (60 leopards) batallion. IT HAS TO STOP!
@spitzer72 Look I can also tell you as a former U.S. Soldier and Purple Heart recipient, that you really have to be there, on the front lines, in order to have an EDUCATED opinion. You know everything you know about U.S. policies, doctrines, the wars...through biased third party sources. You've never been there. You've never seen the smiling Iraqis who tearfully thanked us for what we were doing, the school's we've built, all done in COOPERATION with Iraqi and Afghan people. YOU need to wake up.
@brivanas Media sources? Do I sound like I get my info from media sources? That's your source. I would LOVE to know where you get your half brain ideas, because I can tell you one thing. There's no oil in Iraq lol
wake up from what? While I was in Iraq, Ive seen more Iraqis die by the hands of other Iraqis.
The only people that came to fight us were foreigners with some zealous agendas.
The responsibility isnt of the armed men doing their job but rather those who justified their deployment
The military is non compatible with waking up or changing its doctrine. If you want to blame someone, try the UN and find out the number of genocides it allowed to happen through its strategies.
first of all, get the branch of service right, he isnt a soldier, hes a Marine.
we all come to these conclusions but after weighing all the consequences you realize that you have to be there for your friends and help them come back alive. Nothing else, we never believe in any of your civilian political bullshit to start off with.
almost every part of the movie is brilliant: the plot, narrative, acting, music, special effects... the only thing that sucks is the directing which is pretty much predictable... this movie would've won academy awards if a better director was in charge of it
SO MANY SOLDIERS FALL IN THE THEATRES OF WAR YET OUR GOVERNMENTS DO NOTHING TO SAVE OUR TROOPS,THE UK CUTS SPENDING ,SAVES ON CHEAPER EQUIPTMENT SOLDIERS DIE ,,,,TIME FOR THIS TO HAPPEN FOR RULE ,,,MEN ARE NOT MEAT ,IF SOLDIERS AND GENERALS READ SUN TSU ,,,THE ARMY IS ALWAYS INDEPENDENTOF THE GOVERNMENT AND RAISES ITS OWN CASH ,,,,
@Freelancer591 You do realize no one EVER tried to harm you, you were the ones harming others for political and economical reasons...Even both attacks on ,,your'' soil,in YOUR ENTIRE HISTORY are either revenge(9.11) or your own agenda(Pearl Harbor)...So cut the crap and watch the damn movie,it will show you how your government treats blind patriots, and who are they trying to make a villain in it (the rare American with brains )
we've had high ranking officers like Gen Butler who protested against the system almost a century ago, and it still happens, but as a uniformed service member you will disgrace your unit by mutinying.
90% of the civilian population made up their mind on 9/11, we obeyed, because we're not paid to think or contemplate what the civilians decide upon.
Dec 7th 1941 was a neccesary sacrifice, nothing else wouldve convinced USA to do something about the jap expansion.
I never tire of watching this opening sequence... one of Bay's best films. It just conveys so much emotion; the editing, slow and mysterious cinematography, and absolute brilliant score just bring it all together.
If we had a populace that really gave a rat's ass about understanding complex issues, instead of relying on others to dumb it down for them, I wouldn't have a problem with direct democracy. Let's be honest, a country that anyone in their right mind would vote for Sarah Palin is a country that is probably better off the way it is now, instead of letting "The People" have more power than what the Framers intended.
Let the "people" run the world? The same people who think that Justin Bieber is art? The same people who think that knowing the political process is less important than knowing who won "Survivor"? Thanks, but no thanks. Maybe, not just maybe if the people got involved and started, voting for good candidates, instead of voting for people who proclaim to be just like "them", you would get a better situation. That, and people need to learn how to form educated opinions, by doing some reading.
@francobobfred It's terrible. A General holds the highest military rank and holds the most power, influence, and authority over any military operation, yet politics dictate that he leave his men to die.
theres a couple things wrong with this movie 1 vx gas doesnt melt skin the antodote thing nothing can stop your skin from melting like that Marines arent called soilders theyre called marines
i agree with Hummel also but he had a heart because he was never going to kill civilians and realse the VX Poison gas. he was just trying to send a message by holding out at alcatraz
@abdulqudz89 main deal of the movie music was composed by nick glennie smith though. Two themes (the main themes) were written by Zimmer. Some other tracks were done by Harry Gregson-Williams, and the car chase was done by Don Harper, just for your information.
@ViennasNachos Only if you love getting up early in the morning, uniform inspections, white-glove room inspections (until you move out), drills, field ops, formations, taking accountability, cleaning bathrooms (the dirty kind), curfew, and doing just about everything else nobody wants to do.
In the higher ranks, it's basically the same, only you're responsible for the stupid sh*t your troops do, and they don't learn any better.
As long as you know what you're getting yourself into. ; )
@LeGiiTuhMate It doesn't matter if they weren't allowed to go behind enemy lines. They were his men; his brothers, and he let all of them down by abandoning them. War is not black and white where it is/isn't one's fault. Everyone has a story, and his is that he was awarded a medal of honor for sitting behind politics while the real heroes died alone, unremembered, and unsung.
With that song and words in my ears, I'm going to take a gun and kill all terrorists all over the word, serioustly. This is an awesome film, epic music and even more awesome story. I'm with Hummel.
@harriet807 Haha I honestly said, typical faggot saying stupid on youtube.. Than I watch video from the beginning to mid part and I see the word "slut".. and I was like uhhh.. hold up haha
What would be awesome is if they make a modern warfare movie and get the original director of The Rock to direct it along with Hanz Zimmer to do the musical score....that would be kick-ass
So because a few thousand families didn't get state benefits because of their loss, this guy takes threatens the murder of millions of people with nerve gas?
@JakeFuyou he never was gonna shoot off the nerve gas he just wanted to get there attention because if you watched the movie you'll notice that he changes the course of the rocket when it was launched.
hummel wanted to prove a point to all politicians that our men and women in the military cannot be blindly used then thrown away when it becomes politically incorrect to help them.
while the methods used by this fictional character our extreme it should be noted that the character never had any real intention of setting of something so dangerous as nerve gas that trait could do with being emulated by many
I'm with Hummel. When politics doens't show respect for fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism, it's time for them to let their country rule by real patriots.
Why is everyone talking about Michael Bay all the time when they think about this movie? God bless the USA, God bless our soldiers.
Freelancer591 1 year ago
@Freelancer591 You do realize no one EVER tried to harm you, you were the ones harming others for political and economical reasons...Even both attacks on ,,your'' soil,in YOUR ENTIRE HISTORY are either revenge(9.11) or your own agenda(Pearl Harbor)...So cut the crap and watch the damn movie,it will show you how your government treats blind patriots, and who are they trying to make a villain in it (the rare American with brains )
Testosteron250 10 months ago
@Testosteron250
we've had high ranking officers like Gen Butler who protested against the system almost a century ago, and it still happens, but as a uniformed service member you will disgrace your unit by mutinying.
90% of the civilian population made up their mind on 9/11, we obeyed, because we're not paid to think or contemplate what the civilians decide upon.
Dec 7th 1941 was a neccesary sacrifice, nothing else wouldve convinced USA to do something about the jap expansion.

Great movie score. We used it as inspiration/temp music for our game music, which we've done for the game "Extreme Assault", in 1997.

Canedude08 1 year ago
Let the "people" run the world? The same people who think that Justin Bieber is art? The same people who think that knowing the political process is less important than knowing who won "Survivor"? Thanks, but no thanks. Maybe, not just maybe if the people got involved and started, voting for good candidates, instead of voting for people who proclaim to be just like "them", you would get a better situation. That, and people need to learn how to form educated opinions, by doing some reading.
Canedude08 1 year ago
"They're not coming for us, are they sir?" That must have been a frightening thing for the General to remember hearing.
francobobfred 1 year ago 11
@francobobfred It's terrible. A General holds the highest military rank and holds the most power, influence, and authority over any military operation, yet politics dictate that he leave his men to die.

As long as you know what you're getting yourself into. ; )

@LeGiiTuhMate It was symbolic as to what he did. Being the highest military award, he felt he didn't deserve it for letting his men die.
crazy4sian 1 year ago
@crazy4sian True, True, But iThink He Did, It Wasn't His Fault. The Evac Couldn't Make It.
LeGiiTuhMate 1 year ago
@LeGiiTuhMate It doesn't matter if they weren't allowed to go behind enemy lines. They were his men; his brothers, and he let all of them down by abandoning them. War is not black and white where it is/isn't one's fault. Everyone has a story, and his is that he was awarded a medal of honor for sitting behind politics while the real heroes died alone, unremembered, and unsung.

hummel wanted to prove a point to all politicians that our men and women in the military cannot be blindly used then thrown away when it becomes politically incorrect to help them.
while the methods used by this fictional character our extreme it should be noted that the character never had any real intention of setting of something so dangerous as nerve gas that trait could do with being emulated by many
