  • Very dramatic indeed! Too bad it is not true. John Scopes was not a science teacher, he was the football coach who sometimes subbed. When the science teacher was asked to stand trial he said he couldn't because he had not taught the evolution of man so they went to Scopes. Scopes also had not taught the evolution of man, so they claimed that since it was in the state textbook and he used the state textbook they would charge him on that basis.

  • @1smallstep He did not take the stand at the trial because if he did he would either have to commit pejury or admit that he had not taught human evolution. He did not lose the case; rather Darrow changed the plea to guilty - after he got to present all his evidence. You will note that I keep metioning the evolution of man. This is because that is what the Butler Act forbade; teaching that man descended from animals. It was legal to teach any other aspect of the hypothesis of evolution.
