  • one of my favorite songs

  • i love her

  • Joni Mitchell is rated as one of the best songwriters of the 20th century. I believe it. "I could drink a case of you and I would still be on my feet..."

  • Comment removed

  • Practical Magical brought me here! :)

  • always joni..her song is my song forever!!

  • She has a very nice voice :)

  • This woman is a goddess in every way

  • I actually heard James Blake's version first and instantly fell in love with the song. When I heard Joni Mitchell's version, I was blown away. She has a voice of an angel.. I love this even more. so beautiful. <3

  • James Blake just gave us teenagers a great alternative to this great song that seems to be not as attractive as it was once... But it's still a good song. And James Blake still made a great cover... And they both had their reasons to choose this song and there is a reason why we're sitting here listening to this and see all those memories pass by..

  • This song makes me want to love again :) its so adorable and the lyrics are so meaningful, and true!

  • love is touching souls says it all for me

  • divino...

  • I could drink a case of this song and I'd still be on my feet.

  • I will always have a place in my heart for this song . One of the best song writers of all time.

  • joni we love u

  • You know I heard once that Jeff Buckley used to cover this song. I wonder if anyone has heard it?

  • the only time Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were "starstruck" was when they met Joni!

  • The most heavenly voice ever

  • Yeah, well. To my knowledge, she is the only woman in Rolling Stone's top 100 guitarists, of all time.

  • @MicroWorldLover I found her from that too...>>Tina Turner was it? Or Diana Ross haha, one of them

  • ahahah just came on here to be all like, "yo james blake totally covered this at the trocadero in phili last night!". But it looks like him covering this is old news lol. any way he was fucking awsome and this song was beautifully covered.

  • thanks J

  • u just saw james blake's cover at the commodore in vancouver live tonight..... amazing

  • If I ever have a daughter, this will be the perfect song to give to her to help her cope with her first heartbreak.... All of her other songs are for everyday living :)

  • I love this poem/song, and her own "cover" of it on her Both Sides album is lovely.

  • i absulotly love this song it just moves me <3 <3 !!!

  • I can't even imagine loving someone this much!

  • James fucking Blake covering Joni Mitchell? How disgusting. And all his internet friends thumbing it up too. All things considered there's nothing worse than James Blake.

  • @polyesterpoontang

Hahah. I'd never heard of him before listening to his cover, but I don't understand all the thumbs up either 'cause it wasn't that good.

  • @polyesterpoontang I wonder if you've taken the time to really listen to James Blake, or for that matter Joni Mitchell. Music is something, that, like everything else, changes over time. All of the modern musicians have been influenced by the musicians before them. James Blake decided to reference one of his influences in the way he felt he needed to. His music is just as honest and musical as the music of Joni's era, and that is what really matters, not a disgruntled comparison of the two.

  • Prince's cover is brilliant. Always nice to hear the original, though. Joni is something else. Not saying Prince's version is better, but there are two types of people who listen to music. Those who get Prince, and those who don't.

  • Gah. I was trying to listen to Beyonce & had to come here to get that bad sound out of my ears.

  • seven people have never been to canada....

  • @Putaspellonyou one person knows how to be redundant...

  • @AlphabetSoupCircus im supervising coordinator of the department fo redundancy department....

  • NO cover of this song will EVER beat this. The lyrics, the tone the voice fluctuations, the emotion. I will cry every time. THANK YOU.

  • i luv how unpredictable Joni's voice is. i also luv the part where she says, "O Canada". now, that's what i call representation. u gotta luv Joni Mitchell. she has a voice like a chorus of 1,000 angels.

  • @thegrungewave it makes me feel choked up, and l'm not even Canadian!

  • The first song I've heard of Joni. <3

  • Just saying, Practical Magic had one of the BEST soundtracks everrrrr<33

  • The emotional power and haunting loveliness of this ballad still shine, nearly 35 years after the first time I heard it. The Diana Krall cover is so good because the material is so good to start with. though surely Krall is a wonderful artist and does a very soulful cover of it.

  • @raven2783 LOL

  • I Love It!!!

  • I LOVE YOU CANADA

  • i hope this song is played at my funeral.

  • I'm white and I like this.

  • when i was young i never understood why my mum loved her so much, now im older, i understand.

  • @maturitity hell yer me to :) everyword makes sense now :)

  • joni mitchell's song lyrics is simply.....true.

  • So proud to own this album.

  • @Isaidveto me too : )

    it's soul food

  • wooho english homework ps its nick

  • i would like to someone be in my blood like holy wine, beautiful song.....

  • 3 people taste bitter. Not sweet at all!

  • Q. What do Joni/Laura Nyro have in common?

    A. I COULD DRINK A CASE OF BOTH GIRLS (and do other things to them as well!).

  • *Death stare at the dislikers*

  • Can't remember how many times I've cried to this song.

  • If you dislike, why watch it?

  • Musical talent equal to Neil Young. Both about the same age, from Canada, and had polio as a child.

  • @mickbrian1231 lovely bit of information there

  • If anybody wants me I'll be in the bar with my ipod.

  • When I was 13 and I got my first ever crush my mum gave me this album and said "You'll need it soon, and for ever after", she wasn't wrong :)

  • @clayduckling Wow, what an amazing way to put it.

  • @clayduckling that's a wonderful ancedote - thanks for sharing

  • @clayduckling Your mom is cool.

  • it's

And I said, constantly in the darkness

    Where's that at?...

  • i just love this song soo cutee (y)

  • I'm far too young to like Joni Mitchell, but I love everything she does. Her voice is unique and her lyrics and soulful.....sums up the feeling of love and infatuation exactly

  • @elderwand08 No-one is to young for Joni. She is phenomenal. Beautiful and timeless.

  • Stop talking about james blake .. Are you dumb ? Joni is the true genius

  • @pouidg James blake is really good. Although I agree we shouldnt bring up other artists.

  • Stop talking about james blake .. Are you dumb ? Johny is the true genius

  • Joni's voice and stories are a gift to the senses.

  • Good glad to be of help....also they both joni and cohen grew up in canada it was enevitable there path's would cross...

  • Thumbs up if James Blake brought you here.

  • thanks

  • we love you JONI

  • i reckon james blakes version was better, so much heart and soul in his singing and the piano was just reeeeeeeeeeediculous...

  • @ScrottIshEre Shame he didn't write it…

  • @Joebycool i know he didnt write it, im saying sometimes the cover version is better than the original....

  • @ScrottIshEre

Guys, please don't compare James Blake's cover to the original. There's a reason the original has been thriving for this long, there's a reason he wanted to cover the song. Look at it from the perspective that he was paying homage to Joni and not that "the cover version is better than the original". Because that's just wrong.

  • @clearcrimson While I agree wholeheartedly with your opinion--Joni's passion and vocal character is beyond extraordinary--others are welcome to hold their own opinions. It is not for you to decide what they should prefer. :)

  • I love this song

  • Comment removed

  • @mu1138 And that sentence has little relation to English grammar...

  • soulful what a voice I love her sound

  • James Blake was insane

  • James Blake did such a lovely rendition of this on BBC Radio earlier today.

  • @ricerice566 I absolutely loved James Blakes cover last night on Zane Lowes show

  • @ricerice566 yes he did, but the wistfulness of Joni's tune he cannot capture. The feminine c'est la seul. Tears me up . . . I hope I'm beyond those aching years by now. Such sweet sorrow.

  • PERFECTION

  • This is a brilliant song that catches inside the veins, halts me where I'm standing whenever I hear it. I don't know what all the discussion is about - should only be about the music, the artist, and it's effect on you, the listener, all these old years later. Thank you for the song!

  • @hecutler1111 your comment is beautiful and is right on target

  • Hey, numb nut...I guess you don't the difference between a typo and a misspelling. I think you need an editor... or at least need to get a life

  • @janemacdonnell1 Wow, I apologize. Sorry. I thought it was funny, in an ironic way. That's it. Please, for the sake of those around you, get help..

  • @janemacdonnell1 On a side note, your rage is very un-Joni like. Sperm-gargler? Insulting my manliness? Did I in anyway do something of the sort to you? I hope not. If so, sorry. Truly.

  • @cloverboy75

OK cloverboy...just as an FYI, there is more than one person with access to this account, so you have received replies to your comment from several sources. I'm sure that you know many people on YouTube sip wine or whatever at the same time they are tapping on the keyboard ... so that typos are not uncommon. Let's just let it go and agree that we all love Joni...

  • I am paid to be a writer...but whenever I hear Joni and feel her her lyrics, I am humbeled

  • @janemacdonnell1 If you were paid to be a writer, you would know how to spell "humbled".

  • @cloverboy75 hi Sperm gargler! No it is not the person tou insulted -claiming that she was not a writer?-- well this account is an alias for good reason. you on the other hand have no reason have no need to do so because you are living in a Govt.subsidised home and are a nasty and totally self -loathing little man(man-in gender not a man at all) 35 year old joke.Do me a favor, and try to respond -before your IQ drops below its regular 60%

  • @janemacdonnell1 wow. I point out a spelling mistake and you come up with all sorts of vuperative ad hominens. Good for you. There is help for that kind of unreasoning rage. Seek it.

  • @cloverboy75 or maybe spelling here doesnt effect ones pay check? u think?

  • @singapore7773 why are u jumping in? who invited you? I simply pointed out the irony of a writer making a basic spelling error. Of course it coudl have been unintentional. Let it go. This lady already showed her true hateful colours.

  • @cloverboy75 the reason i "jumped in" in an open forum no less is very simple. I doubt you have done a survey on the spelling ability of all paid writers. Apologia pro vita sua.

  • a huge and touching love letter

  • Now I've heard Joni Mitchell before, my dad is a huge fan. I've heard Little Green, I've heard Yellow Taxi, Help Me, etc. But never have I heard such beautiful words sang in the most perfect way until I heard this song.

  • I love the way she sings 'O Canada.'

  • I was gonna like it, and then I saw that the likes were exactly 420. AND THEN I LIKED IT ANYWAY.

  • Love is touching souls.

  • Oooo Ca-na-daaaa-aaaaaaaa! <3

  • Love this song!!!!! I love this version and the Diana Krall version, either of those work for me. But Joni Mitchell's version is the best.

  • "I could drink a case of you, and still be on my feet."

Those words are on my dad's grave. I am so sad and yet so happy whenever I hear this song.

Miss you daddy, happy 7th anniversary.

  • beautiful voice thank for placing this issue .. from Venezuela hits

  • Her voice reminds me of beautiful, colourful, champagne bubbles floating to the top of a simple, crystal glass. Lovely! So Lovely!

  • @preshtime I love the metaphor. Gorgeous!

  • EL TIEMPO ES INEXORABLE, Y TE OFRECE SABIDURIA, LA HISTORIA SE BASA EN HECHOS VIVIDOS, Y NOSOTROS TENEMOS UNA GRAN HISTORIA, CHIMBAROZO COTOPAXI, SIEMPRE SERE TUYA,

  • This song reminds me of a long relationship with a man who was so unreliable but completely engaging, brilliant and fun. He was terribly broken but I loved, loved, loved him. When I met his mother she warned me - in a kind way - that I should be cautious.

" I met a woman, she had a mouth like yours..."

  • @mindyspark I really like your interpretation! Thank you for sharing!

  • @mindyspark This song is insired by the time joni spent with leonard cohen....the were definetly lovers....

  • @nidgybaby wow, just researched that. Cohen was very much like my old lover - so that feeling was no coincidence. Thanks!

  • I have always thought of Joni as one of the world's most beautiful women, before I saw her face. Just her voice.

  • Joni Michell is my heroine!

She gave me self-reliance, when I needed it most.

At 17, with many responsibilities, and very little guidance...she gave me hope, for a promise of better things to come.

    It kept me going....

    Nancy.

  • I love how the lyrics are open to interpretation.

  • @Marixpress2

The song itself is "so bitter and so sweet"

  • This song is really intoxicating... Bittersweet, brilliant. Really gets you imagining you are crying over a bottle of liquor for someone automatically when you hear it. That's what I felt when I first heard this.

  • This is how I want to feel when I fall in love..

  • my God!

  • she totally inspires me

  • This is what TIMELESSNESS is all about.

  • Absolute genius are Joni is. Great post.

  • thank you

  • This perfect album reminds me of home as a kid, but breaks my heart.

  • To the love of my life, CeCe. I'm frightened by the devil, and drawn to those who ain't. You're in heaven now, save me a space.

  • J'étais jeune, j'écoutais cette grande dame en pleurant dans le train ... So beautiful voice and person.

  • ...Missing the poetry of the 60's and 70's.

Oh and you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet

And I would still be on my feet

Oh Id still be on my feet

( This is about my husband , when I listen I think about him.)

  • Just before our love got lost you said -

I'm as constant as a northern star -

And I said.. constantly in the darkness ....?

    So beautiful - I love u Joni x

  • I love this song!!

  • Joni,You to me are the most talented woman on the planet.

  • Thank you to the movie "Practical Magic" for introducing me to this song so that I can fall in love with yet another beautiful song.

  • There was a time when music was creative and could be considered art. Today it's become a vice... fame, money, mediocrity, award shows, "Idol" franchises. What a sad future we look toward.

  • @cliflejeune

What a sad, pessimistic view of the world you have. Way to shut things out. Music is cheaper and easier to make and distribute than ever before, there a gazillion bands and genres out there today. If you can't find anything there that moves you, well that says more about you than it does the state of the world.

  • @Shirokinukatsukami Agreed. I'm tired of people who never tried to understand the music culture of today, let alone to actively look at the sheer variety that grew from the relatively small group of influences certain people hold on a pedestal.

  • @Shirokinukatsukami what an intolerant troll you are. Disagreement with another person's view does not merit such character judgment. I happen to agree with ciflejeune, does that make me a sad pathetic person too? Sure there is some good music today, but on the whole, the music industry is inarguably much more fixated with money and fame rather than artistry. This can't be argued.

  • @paulliam3

Ummm, is your comment an attempt at irony?

i hate to break it to you, but "the music industry" is certainly not some monolithic entity. In the post-modern world, niche geres fill niche markets. If you choose to turn a blind eye to the myriad of music being made out there, that is your choice. And yeah, your kind of traditionalism does kind of make you sad and pathetic. Sorry, i just don't like your narrow mindedness and misguided preconceptions.

  • Comment removed

  • @Shirokinukatsukami I'm going to end this and ask that if you wish to continue instigating petty feuds and making hyperbolic judgments about strangers over the internet, please take it elsewhere. Ciflejeune made one harmless general remark and you've turned it into some kind of exaggerated and needless debate. Joni Mitchell's music is beautiful, and that is all that needs to be said. Good day.

  • @paulliam3

My comments to the original poster, stand, as do mine to you. Don't get defensive about it. Relax, and try to engage with the world that is out there, that includes a plethora of new and wonderful music, contrary to your narrow views about the state of the "music industry"

You are right, there is no point in engaging in petty feuds, however the ironic thing there is that it is you who happens to be making hyperbolic judgments.

    Continue onwards to old fogeyism...

  • @cliflejeune Joni's music overflows with soul. Music certainly is not the same today.

  • I'm so grateful to J.M. for giving us such exquisite music. This is an outrageously beautiful song -

  • I hope I can write songs as beautiful as this one day

  • This is a beautiful song. i absolutely fell in luv wth it since i heard it in the pracical magic movie, where nic kidman is singing to it in the film in the car. gorgeous.

  • what's not to like! brilliant

  • My wife loved Joni. She had every album. My wife died in 1982 at age 27, and here I sit alone and crying, listening to the music...

  • @nnamahk that is so beautiful. i am sorry your wife passed away. your post made me hope that when i pass people will listen to joni and be reminded of me.

  • @nnamahk No one is alone, in your blood like holy wine

  • @nnamahk BLESS YOUR HEART

  • @nnamahk Soo Sorry to hear that :(

  • I think this may be Joni's best song ever!!!!! Although I love everything she's done.

  • "Go to him, stay with him if you can but be prepared to bleed"

    Timeless advice!

  • Just thanks for posting this.
