@jpzxcvbnm I was involved with the school system as a supplier of curriculum and my experience is 9/10 teachers are competent and try hard to serve the children well. The problem with the teachers association is that they are using an outdated model that rewards tenure and nothing else. A compensation model needs to be created that rewards specialty, updated and advanced credentials. The way it is set up now the teachers get rewarded for being old and stagnant.
I don't like teachers' unions and undeserving "tenure" positions they have. But c'mon man - this superintendent didn't try to cover up anything. He actually sounded shocked when you said you don't want disciplinary action taken against the teacher. Putting words in his mouth - plain and simple. This guy doesn't make the rules, but he has to follow them. That's why he said what he said about the difficulty in firing teachers.

@freetube2u My mother is working for one of the Swedish teacher unions and I can promise you that nothing of that you just wrote is true, she is paid less than many of the teachers she is representing. She used to teach too but felt that she was needed in the union to make the teachers' situation better. There is a LOT of stress in the job due to too many hours etc, stuff that has to be fixed =)

The superintendent sounds reasonable, actually. He wants to help the guy out, but he won't agree to fire a respected teacher on one parent's word. When the guy says he wants to do it quietly, he says, "That doesn't resolve the problem." Upon seeing that the guy REALLY does not want this to be an issue, he reconsiders.

Education is not a right it's a privalege. It should not be the government's responsibility to educate it's people, it should be the parents! If we abolished public schools today, there would be a hundred thousand people ready to buy the school grounds and turn them into profitable schools with great teachers and real results. Teachers would be hired and fired on performance and our children would be on the top again, not the trash of the world's education levels.

the best teachers i've had, though, were either teaching AP, honors classes, or marine biology camp (not run by a public school). teachers with smaller classes that are passionate about the subjects they teach and use multiple teaching styles to serve various students learning styles, those are the best =)

Then the "dad" says he doesn't want to start proceedings. The superintendent resists, saying "that won't resolve the issue", but finally relents because without a formal complaint there can be no proceedings.
No one should be calling for this teacher to be fired without due process. First, this is completely taken out of context. All we know is a teacher used the n-word in class. It is never appropriate to use this word in any setting. I have been in business settings where this word has been used and the employee who said it was not immediately fired. He was brought into HR, written up (1 of 3 write ups required before firing), and we had training. Why should this be any different for teachers?

We hold teachers as role models and they should be as such. If the teacher does something like that this clearly shows that it's not as easy as it is in the real world to remove that person from their position. The School Administrator NEVER said he was going to cover anything up! The parent told him numerous times to keep it quiet!! Thanks to the Union protection, the teacher cannot be fired right away. The School Administrator said that they must follow due process. The same process given to every American under the Constitution. I don't think he was going to just let the incident disappear. He has a procedure to follow. The Administrator should only talk face to face so not to be recored!!!
This was an attack on NJ schools and I don't live in California so I cannot assume to know what is going on there if teachers are molesting students and getting away with it but I would bet that it has to do with administration or school board problems. I teach in NJ and it is my experience that teachers that need to be fired, tenured or not, ARE fired. Two tenured teacherswere fired from my school last year. On the NATIONAL standardized tests, NJ ranks 4th and 5th In the reading and math.

I do however believe that there could be acceptable context here but I no nothing about the context of the words, which could provide an acceptable context. Even if the context was acceptable it would show a tremendous lack of judgement depending on the teacher. I see this contextually accepted but only when it involves a well-liked teacher.

As a teacher, I do not allow the "N" word to be used at all in my classroom, and there are MANY teachers who do not allow it to be used. Yet the students use the "N" word along with the "F" word and other offensive language. When teachers write students up on their use of offensive language, little is done to discipline them. Students use offensive as if it's the norm. So where did we, as a society, go wrong. Parents are quick to sue, yet slow to parent. Go figure.

@jpzxcvbnm I was involved with the school system as a supplier of curriculum and my experience is 9/10 teachers are competent and try hard to serve the children well. The problem with the teachers association is that they are using an outdated model that rewards tenure and nothing else. A compensation model needs to be created that rewards specialty, updated and advanced credentials. The way it is set up now the teachers get rewarded for being old and stagnant.

The superintendent sounds reasonable, actually. He wants to help the guy out, but he won't agree to fire a respected teacher on one parent's word. When the guy says he wants to do it quietly, he says, "That doesn't resolve the problem." Upon seeing that the guy REALLY does not want this to be an issue, he reconsiders.

Then the "dad" says he doesn't want to start proceedings. The superintendent resists, saying "that won't resolve the issue", but finally relents because without a formal complaint there can be no proceedings.

No one should be calling for this teacher to be fired without due process. First, this is completely taken out of context. All we know is a teacher used the n-word in class. It is never appropriate to use this word in any setting. I have been in business settings where this word has been used and the employee who said it was not immediately fired. He was brought into HR, written up (1 of 3 write ups required before firing), and we had training. Why should this be any different for teachers?

The School Administrator NEVER said he was going to cover anything up! The parent told him numerous times to keep it quiet!! Thanks to the Union protection, the teacher cannot be fired right away. The School Administrator said that they must follow due process. The same process given to every American under the Constitution. I don't think he was going to just let the incident disappear. He has a procedure to follow. The Administrator should only talk face to face so not to be recored!!!

This was an attack on NJ schools and I don't live in California so I cannot assume to know what is going on there if teachers are molesting students and getting away with it but I would bet that it has to do with administration or school board problems. I teach in NJ and it is my experience that teachers that need to be fired, tenured or not, ARE fired. Two tenured teacherswere fired from my school last year. On the NATIONAL standardized tests, NJ ranks 4th and 5th In the reading and math.

Even if the context was acceptable it would show a tremendous lack of judgement depending on the teacher. I see this contextually accepted but only when it involves a well-liked teacher.

As a teacher, I do not allow the "N" word to be used at all in my classroom, and there are MANY teachers who do not allow it to be used. Yet the students use the "N" word along with the "F" word and other offensive language. When teachers write students up on their use of offensive language, little is done to discipline them. Students use offensive as if it's the norm. So where did we, as a society, go wrong. Parents are quick to sue, yet slow to parent. Go figure.

Merit pay will make teachers who share their best lessons stop sharing if it means that they would appear to be more equal to another. Just like industry. Also do teachers get to fire the students who do not cooperate, don't do any work, and have useless parents? I'm tired of people who no nothing about education claiming to know how to fix it.

All of you are acting like 10 year olds on here. A tenured teacher CAN be fired, evidently that school chooses not to do so. TWO tenured teachers were fired from my school district last year and it was relatively easy. Yes, it required an investigation and hearings but it WAS possible.

There are teachers in the LA school system who have MOLESTED STUDENTS who still have their jobs! They're not allowed in the classroom. They collect full pay to go to the district office every day. There they sit in a room and surf the internet while collecting their checks. Because the union won't let them be fired and no sane person will let them in a classroom.

Teacher cerification exams in VA and Mass.several yrs back had avg scores of 58 and 63 . Governors dilemma; rather than shift administrators to the classroom, they lowerd passing grade. Unconscionable. With exceptions, but generally, studies show our school children being cheated by the lowest quintile of the college bound & grads of lower tier colleges. Failure vs Germany, for ex., where highly qualified teachers are held in high esteem. A shameful celebration of mediocrity by treachery.
