It's nice to see the real Wing Chun forms demonstrated by Yip Man... Ip Man's Wing Chun... I like!!! Don't know why some say it's not the real thing!!!
I wonder HOW unedited the woodendummy-part is, or if it has been shot in different occasions. One can also see how ill YipMan suffered on cancer in the chamkiu - hos left arm seems to be hurting...
So, someone tried to sale this footage, really I don't believe that! , I they did shame on them, and to bad for the buyer. That is nice footage you can see he is felling a little tired in the movements.
This is poetic, and somber all at once. The man was so dedicated to martial arts that he did this even though he was close to death. His skills are still very apparent from the video, but it's also apparent he is not well.
At about 5:47 it looks like his student stepped forward to catch him in case he fell.
Its good to have a reference to how Ip Man performed the forms even if you practice certain parts a little differently. Triggers questions as to why bits are different among styles and do they have any merit in their addition to the form. At the very least this should give a minimum standard for the forms.
i have seen this footage so many time on the internet and youtube in particular...this is the highest quality version i've found...this is amazing. thanks for this treasure. RIP GM Ip Man
@WingChum Correct. A common misconception is that the first section (where he slowly move his hands back and forth in certain positions) is training the positions of the blocks.
It is true that it is teaching you about your centreline position. However it is MOST importantly training elbow energy, which comes from relaxing the bicep, and using ONLY the tricep and a little muscle just behind the elbow that is otherwise unused in day to day life. Think of it as the WC version of going to the gym.
This is very important footage to everyone who has an interest in Wing Chun. In many other styles, the style was either too ancient or circumstances prevented their greatest masters being filmed. It's fortunate that we have this record of one of the true legends of Chinese Martial Arts.
It's also inspirational to consider that he passed away a week after this footage was taken.
@TheMartialartsJedi You are free to practice in your own way. But, that is a little like memorizing your multiplication tables without first having learned basic addition and subtraction. It may sound good to recite them (or in this case, look good to practice), but it is not build on any real foundation. JMHO. Good luck with your training.
this is amazing and you can really see the powerful will grandmaster Ip had towards the end. A true martial artist and a truly magnificent person to have that kind of will and determination. thank you for posting
@TheMartialartsJedi maybe best to start with sil lim tao as chum kiu builds on the basic movements in sil lim tao. Thats why its taught first but its up to you.
Fantastic historical document for all Wing Chun practitioners. Thanks for posting. We hope we can entice Sigung back over the Scottish border again sometime soon
@wutanSpain understand you meaning but Yip Man believed in progression and as long as you have good reason for changes then it is fine to do so, he told Yip Ching once when asked about changing the form that he could do what he wanted with the form, the truth about whether the changes were good ones would be found out down the generations and if the changes survived then they were good.
thank you for sharing this, ive always wanted to see the whole thing and couldnt really find it.. plus its in realtime haha... this is pure awesomeness.. like yip man

@TheMartialartsJedi You have to do the sil lim tao form before the chum kiu form.

love this :) ip man r.i.p. im on the 108 movement form its nice to see a master work it
blazels 1 year ago
This is great that that so many people from the Yip Man lineage can see how he performed the forms.
The thing that strikes me is that Sil Lim Tao has more tension in it at certain points than many "Masters" seem to demonstrate.
I can see the entire tense & release of force that generates short range power.
So many versions seem to be TOO relaxed all the way through.

@WingChum Also, it is the second section where the applications of the blocks and their positions are truly being practised.
