  • I was 6 years old in Sunnyvale, ca

  • Actually few ppl did die that day

  • what about the guy who was crushed between the bridges and survived until resqued, taken to the hospital, died a few days later?

  • I was living in Santa Rosa at the time and was out jogging. I never felt a thing but man was everyone rushing out of their homes and asking if I felt anything.

  • I was born the day before it happened; wasn't even 19 hrs old at the time. I hold that day so very close to my heart.

  • I think it was wrong to ask the people to leave the Stadium when the center of the stadium is the safest place to sit and wait. If an after shock hit while they were walking out under the bleacher and then the bleacher give way and crush the people....

  • What is amazing about this quake is that there wasn't as many deaths as you would think. An earthquake of this magnitude in another country probably would have killed over 1,000.

  • its because i happen in the united states, other poor countrys have more death because, the home are weak....people die from earth quakes from stuff falling on there head

  • @canarinhoamazon You're right. Actually I remember this quake and remember thinking how few casualties there actually were, thankfully. But I also remember the year before, in 1988, Armenia had a similar quake that registered 6.9 but the casualties were estimated at about 25,000. The buildings weren't anywhere near as earthquake-resistant as the ones in California. The Armenia quake also received far less media attention.

  • I remember well, took me 5 hours to get home to Ben Lomond in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Santa Cruz Co. was changed forever.

  • Five days in San Francisco, visiting from The Netherlands, and we happen to be there right as a major earthquake strikes! I was 8 years old, and remember it well. People began running around, screaming "It's an earthquake!".

  • Cross checking this video against a map, I only just realized, I was on Beach street at the moment of the earthquak. Right on the other side of the museum, about 8 blocks away, when that Beach/Division went up in flame...

  • Was that a stuffed toy bunny shown at 1 minute?

  • aw it was some sort of stuffed animal that is sooo sad! :( i wasnt alive during this but my parents say it was really scary but kinda exciting

  • that is so sad

  • heh... we just had a little window rattler and I started thinking about this quake. I can't believe its been so many years since this happened.

  • I love how the little teddy bear is just conspicuously sitting there staring at the blaze at 1:00... but he wouldn't know anything about that would he?!?!

  • Juliette Hoskins' cavalier approach is very dangerous. "It won't happen here again.... Somewhere else maybe." Are you kidding me? It's that same type of attitude that leads to unprepared residents who are unable to survive during an earthquake. You must prepare yourself.

  • I don't mean to sound rude about this, but what really bothers me about this coverage is the fact that the media has always focused so much attention on The Marina and The Cypress. They seem to forget that this earthquake was centered in Santa Cruz, and devastated the Downtown. Ford's Department store collapsed killing workers. Los Gatos' Downtown was also hit hard. Gilroy had about 20 homes that were destroyed.

  • Thank you for posting this. I was only 12 in 1989, and remember my dad driving us through the Marina a week after the quake and there were parts still smoldering....

  • @starbrite27 I was 6.

  • I did not live too far from the epicenter of this Earthquake.
