I've seen Gosford Park several times...real sense of period...Jeremy Northam, I believe actually sang himself...beautifully...an a fine acting job...Hats off to Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Helen Mirren...well, to the entire cast...fine acting all around. I've always enjoyed seeing this film...added to the fact that I share the same surname as Ivor Novello...his life and music has always been of interest to me.
One of many matchless Novello songs that deserve contemporary reappraisal. I have suggested that John Wilson, his orchestra and soloists are just the ticket for this on CD after
their wonderful arrangements/performances of film and show tunes - found elsewhere on YouTube.
A movie that I didn't know its existance and I watched it recently.Astonishing.And the music masterpiece .What extraordinary lyrics and music accompanied by an amazing performance of Jeremy Northam.Worth listening thousand times.
I love this song and performance so very much. I sent away to England to get the sheet music several years ago. Too high for me to sing but still nice to have it.
Goodness! Jeremy is sooooooooo talented! I am in love, he is totally wonderful and really cute and sexy. *grin* <3333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333
The lyrics to this song rival the most heart-wrenching in any song - filled with longing and sadness. But interesting that the last lines of the song are framed as questions rather than statements, lending a sense of hope amid the melancholy. Great stuff.
i don't believe there was anything fairytalish about the 1930s. actually i think that in a way things never change (it's even written in the bible: 'there is nothing new under the sun')... people are evil and express that in different ways..
I hope Mr. Altman or Mr. Balaban or Mr. Northam checks these comments. It's April 2010 and I watch the movie over and over on netflix. I feel close to all the characters. It's beautiful in so many ways. Thank you guys if you're reading this.
@ClarkKent2024 Mr. Altman died years ago, he wont be checking ing anytime soon lol, God rest his soul, he made brilliant movies! Jeremy Northams voice is so beautiful, really captures the spirit of Ivor Novello :)
I love this song....I also love this time period..it reminds me of my Grandmother..although she regretted it, I bet she was quite a rounder during this time...
Beautifully rendered by the surprisingly good singing voice of Northam. Very supple and romantic. This song alone turned me onto the talents of Ivor Novello's composition. I do agree that the string section in the background
"schmaltzes" this song too much. The movie version MUCH better, especially echoing down the servant's hallway.
The reason my comment was in quotes was because that's a line from the movie. Trentham says this when they're playing cards, and Ivor is playing/singing.
See the comments below? Some of those are lines too.
Gosford Park is absolutely one of my favourite movies, and I think that one of the best things in it is definitely when Jeremy Northam sings. The Land of Might-Have -Been is without a doubt the best of the songs in Gosford Park. I simply love it!
Sometimes on the rarest nights comes the vision calm and clear gleaming with unearthly lights on our path of doubt and fear Winds from that far land are blown whispering with secret breath hope that plays a tune alone love that conquers pain and death. Shall we ever find that lovely land of might-have-been? Will I ever be your king or you at last my queen? Days may pass and years may pass and seas may lie between Shall we ever find that lovely land of might-have-been?
Somewhere there's another land different from this world below, far more mercifully planned than the cruel place we know. Innocence and peace are there-- all is good that is desired. Faces there are always fair; love grows never old nor tired. We shall never find that lovely land of might-have-been. I can never be your king nor you can be my queen. Days may pass and years may pass and seas may lie between-- We shall never find that lovely land of might-have-been.
Gosford Park, what a glorious experience. And -say what one will- this song brings tears to my eyes, especially when I play it on the piano beyond earshot.
Omigosh it brings tears to me too! Cos i love the film/the time/and his music soooo much. Was at a Ivor Novello tribute performance at a gallery in Cardiff today....loverrrly. x
I've just watched Gosford Park again, listening this time with more enthusiasm to the beautiful musicplayed throughout, especially the beginning and end pieces. I loved them.
Born in 1951, I remember my parents' peers singing songs such as these. "Tomorrow Morning is My Wedding Day" and "The Wedding of Jack and Jill" being two of them. Now they scream frustrations into mikes and call it "music". Thank you for real music. Wonderful!
a song of unrequited love..or of love lost..either way it simply makes me cry like a baby when i hear it. The film is also spectacular..i thought that Hollywood had lost its credibility until this movie.
His Lordship, feverishly fashioned and frightfully fond of the Film "Gosford Park", dashingly and decidedly declares this vivacious vocal Performer, Jeremy Norham, to be Top Hole! Bravo!
this is such a beautiful song. and the film, Gosford Park, doesn't contain a single flaw. it's utterly perfect. everything in it, everyONE in it, especially dame helen mirren. it completely blew me away.
yeah, really nice song, Sasa told me and now i listen it, she said it´s from a movie, but sasa said much more, it was so much that i can´t hold all in my brain. but i remember this song... so far ^^
Thank you so much for uploading this! I loved this song, and didn't find the name until I saw it in youtube, but it can't be heard properly in the movie scene, with people talking.

This song is painfully beautiful. It just makes my heart ache... in a good way. What a mellifluous voice Jeremy Northam has. Just a sublime song.

It's not intended as background music. The bittersweet irony of the song is a comment on the story as a whole.
