According to the IUCN, in the year 2000, the Common Minke Whale population was approximately 182,000, the Fin Whale population was approx. 53,000, and, in 2004, the Humpback population was approx. 60,000. Currently more information is needed by the to determine an accurate estimate for the Antarctic Minke Whale population; however, the scientific community has assessed that the population is at least in the hundreds of thousands.
The JARPA II sample proposals include 850 +/- 10% Antartic Minke Whales, 50 Humpback Whales, and 50 Fin Whales per season. When compared to the IUCN population estimates (assuming Antarctic Minke Whales populations are no greater than Common Minke Whales and 0% growth since the population estimates were made, both conservative assumptions), this equates to killing 0.46% of the Antarctic Minke Whale population, 0.10% of the Fin Whale population, and 0.083% of the Humpback Whale pop. per season.
After reviewing the IUCNs data, a conservative average annual growth rate for these species is about 3%. All things being equal, JARPA II will not result in the extinction of any one of these species. I can; however, understand the concern in regards to the Endangered Fin Whale and would even support pressuring Japan to lay off this species using legal avenues. I have less concern for the Minke and Humpback; neither of which are classified as endangered or threatened.
I think your concerns are genuine and you asked a great question. Given the basic poplation data of each species being targeted by Japan, JARPA II's quotas, and the average growth rates of these populations, I don't think Japan's research whaling will cause a population decrease necessitating protection in the future.

All it takes is common sense to realize there is no "research" being done when you harpoon, drag onboard, kill and immediately process a whale.

Speaking of common sense, to "harpoon, drag onboard, [and] kill" makes sense when conducting lethal research on whales. In addition, given that the ICRW requires whales that are killed to be processed (rather than wasted), it makes sense to begin the processing immediately after death.

Cut out the parts you need for research and package the rest; I don't see how doing this expeditiously prevents research from being done. Given that the purpose of the research and the ICRW is to ensure sustainable whaling, I am not overyly concerned that the research involves lethal means when it comes to the non-endangered minke whales. I do think; however, that Japan should use more discretion in regards to threatened or endangered species such as fin and humpback whales.

Bear with me, this is a long answer. According to the IUCN, in the year 2000, the Common Minke Whale population was approximately 182,000, the Fin Whale population was approx. 53,000, and, in 2004, the Humpback population was approx. 60,000. Currently more information is needed by the to determine an accurate estimate for the Antarctic Minke Whale population; however, the scientific community has assessed that the population is at least in the hundreds of thousands.

The JARPA II sample proposals include 850 +/- 10% Antartic Minke Whales, 50 Humpback Whales, and 50 Fin Whales per season. When compared to the IUCN population estimates (assuming Antarctic Minke Whales populations are no greater than Common Minke Whales and 0% growth since the population estimates were made, both conservative assumptions), this equates to killing 0.46% of the Antarctic Minke Whale population, 0.10% of the Fin Whale population, and 0.083% of the Humpback Whale pop. per season.

All things being equal, JARPA II will not result in the extinction of any one of these species. I can; however, understand the concern in regards to the Endangered Fin Whale and would even support pressuring Japan to lay off this species using legal avenues. I have less concern for the Minke and Humpback; neither of which are classified as endangered or threatened.

this has to be the funniest justifcation yet.... first Japan hunts endangered Sperm in the north and endangered Fin in the Antarctic. They are not hunting theses minke and endangered species to save humpbacks, beause they humpbacks are not listed as endangered. To your criteria they should be hunting just Minke, but they are not... and whales are hardly over populated. On average there is 5% remaining whale numbers of ALL species (some way below like Fin and Blue) before commerial whaling began.

Scientific research (from JARPA ironically) has discovered that whales in the southern ocean contain low levels of contaminants and far less than their counterparts in the Northern Hemisphere. Using the ship for purposes it was not licensed for (i.e. carrying whale meat rather than oil)

Hmmm, last time I checked blood and guts are biodegradable. I suppose you want to charge sharks and other sea predators for violating the ATS as well? An explosion and fire on a factory ship in 2007 resulted in some pollution yes; however, call it a gut feeling, buy I'm fairly sure fires and explosions on board japanese whaling ships are not part of their standard operating procedures. If you lend credibility to your claims then state which international court prosecuted them and your source.

Here, perhaps I can help you out since you appear to be research impaired. The Oriental Bluebird, a ship flying under the Panamanian flag, was charged by a Panamanian court (i.e. NOT an international court) with "failure to comply with Panama's (NOT international) whale protection policies."

Anybody can cite the name of a treaty. If you can't cite the applicable articles then you obviously have failed to conduct your due dilligence and do not have the credibility or the information neccessary to use these treaties to support your case.

You seem to miss out on a lot of facts here.
1. ReflectiaX did not state or infer that the IWC sets a quota for scientific research. You simply invalidated an argument which you yourself introduced.
2. Japanese whaling does not violate the ATS, CITES, or other Intenational Conventions of appropriate jurisdiction, thus, your comments regarding the relative priority of those various legal documents is irrelevant. If you contest this, the onus is on you to cite the applicable treaty articles.

One last thing, calling Antarctican waters the Australian border is like calling the Artic Sea Japan's border. Japan is whaling in international waters; Austrailia's claims to the Antarctic EEZ are not recognized by the vast majority of the international community; thus Australia has no jurisdiction in that region under international law.
You may want to take the time to read up on some of the applicable laws next time.

It's inaction on the part of governments that are too slow to act that causes stuff like this. If they acted appropriately groups like Sea Shepherd wouldn't feel the need to take matters into their own hands. I don't care for Sea Shepherd and I care even less for their methods of doing things, but atleast they are acting to fix the problem.
