Something I learned is the government fudges the numbers. If you are living just under the poverty level and get a cost of living adjustment (to keep up with inflation) it doesn't raise you above the poverty level (even at 99%-it only helps deal with inflation and keeps you at 99%). But the government can and does write people off because they do not raise poverty level by the same amount as the cost of living each year. They need to tie the 2 together.
at least we don't live in real poverty, at least we get some kind of help or starve to death. But we do have a lot of money therefore this problem should be solved before any war.
What's really shameful is how the choices (drugs, alcohol, crime) of some people affect children and others around them. In 2005, total federal, state and local government expenditures on 85 welfare programs were $620 billion. Divided among the 37 million that's $16,750, or $67,000 for a poor family of four. Our government isn't very good stewards for the billions we already pay in taxes for this very effort.
This excellent video clearly explains the greed, brutality and oppression from Capitalist failure!

Helping those in need should be a volunteering choice and not a power of government to mandate such.
A government big enough to give you everything you need is big enough to take everything from you.
Let's get off this insane socialist train; it won't work.

I have an idea: let's stop taxing income. That would free up some money for charitable donations.

Think of what the money spent in just one year in Iraq could do for these people.

True america is in the top highest standards of living, yet it has a high poverty rate, try thinking how bad others countries in the world are.

I think countries like Sweden, Luxemburg, the Netherlands and Belgium have a higher standard of living for the majority of people who live there.
But the USA has more millionaires and billionaires.

I think that's bad, not great. And that's just the poverty line, those (one year ago) 37 million are living BELOW it...

yea in the US poverty is inexcusable, as they have enough money to help these people. in africa and asia it is an extremely different story
