@superdonyoungy not to mention the RAF chopper pilot who risked his life in a stripped out chopper to drop off SAS behind the lines in the Falklands campaign. When they landed the chopper had to be abandoned and the RAF pilot explain to the argies how he "accidentally" lost his bearings and crashed there. The SAS? The pilot complained when they landed they just said, "fuck this" and disappeared without carrying out a single task!

@chas4551 I get the feeling half of the stuff they do is massively exaggerated, the minute they do do something good they run off and want to be celebs, it's a joke really. The real SAS guys were the guys in WW2 who started it, ballsy and genuine.

@superdonyoungy In combat they undertake surveillance etc but a lot of people think they're gungho in the thick of it, when in reality that's the last thing they want as their "quiet" role is more important. The gun fodder regiments can do the gungho stuff! In peacetime they are mainly royal protection, training soldiers in other countries etc. But yes there is a lot of drama attached to what they do and exaggeration. Although in fairness they are super fit and brilliant shots.

Anyone that has served in the SAS can go to Hereford and have a cuppa in the mess, but as soon as that person speaks to the media about their service and what they did, they're banished. And that goes for EVERYONE, soldiers, officers and commanders. Even Sir Peter de la Billière is banished and he was their commanding officer back in the day.

@darrenjohnson90 because there's no need to hide it. "McNab" simply hides his because he wants some privacy and to not be hassled by fans wherever he goes. Also, it probably does help keep the hippies off his back. Many 14int guys/girls have revealed themselves, and SAS soldiers too, so it's probably just for the mystique - sells a few more books. I used to see him as a hero but the nonsense has grown old now. I respect his career - SAS, DCM and MM etc, but he personally is taking the mick.
